I had a pivotal language experience but it was VERY negative. We started learning French in early junior school back in the late sixties. I think it was an experimental thing. I loved it. It was my favourite lesson. I learned all the songs and all the vocab. Then my lovely teacher had a bad accident and the much disliked geography teacher took over. He just put tapes on repeat, screamed at us when we didn't understand, threw things at us, hit and shook us. I was terrified of language lessons, convinced I was stupid and would never learn. In high school I wanted to study science so languages weren't an option on the curriculum. Fast forward 44 years. We moved to France last year and I started to try to re-engage with French. I'm now on the advanced level of Speakly, able to converse easily with French friends and neighbours and hating my old language teacher even more...a teacher who has deprived me of nearly a lifetime of language learning. Now planning which language is next!!

@@AndreaAvila78 He really was horrible - and in my older and more enlightened opinion - had a very unhealthy interest in the boys at school. I'm sure wouldn't be allowed to teach in modern schools. But that was a different era. Lot's of 'stick' (the day started with the public caning in assembly of the previous day's miscreants!) and very few 'carrots'. France is wonderful. We love it. It was the prospect of a language test to renew my residence permit that finally forced me to start learning again and I'm so glad I did.

@@Hide_and_silk I'm so sorry you had that traumatic learning experience at school. Nowadays things have reversed and kids are horrible to teachers. They torture them now. I'm glad you're enjoying French and your new country. I've only been to France once, just to Paris and people were lovely to me when I attempted to speak the language. I loved it. 🥰

@@AndreaAvila78 I agree. I have friends and family who are teachers and they've had some awful experiences. The pendulum has swung a little too far in the other direction...all rights and no responsibilities 🙁. I hope you get to go to France again. It's a beautiful country.

Lampariello's bi-directional translation approach is reminiscent of the method Benjamin Franklin employed to improve his English prose. According to his autobiography, he took from a volume of the Spectator articles whose elegance of expression he admired "and making short Hints of the Sentiment in each Sentence, laid them by a few Days, and then without looking at the Book, tried to complete the Papers again, by expressing each hinted Sentiment at length and as fully as it had been express'd before, in any suitable Words that should come to hand".

I like Luca. When it comes to languages, he's very skilled but also very modest.

For me Luca is a Real Polyglot , he is at least b2 in all the languages he speaks , no like this fake polyglots speaking 20+ languages and only know 5 words .Although if you wanna know 5 words in 30 languages that's ok too 😂💁

At first i didn't believe any of the polyglot mainly because language learning is time consuming as i can understand how i learn in school.I was wrong when i had seen some of his video in different languages which is truly amazing.

It's so interesting to me how many language learners / teachers say that speaking will come later after you have had enough input and others say just the opposite. I'm sure we've all heard the teachers who insist you "must speak from day one!" and that speaking is absolutely the most important part. I've only recently become serious about language learning and I fall in the camp of input-input-input and the speaking can come later. Since I've started to build my routine around input, I am amazed at how much more quickly I am able to understand things in my target language (Dutch). I've still got a long way to go, but I'm excited about the journey now.

Answering your question: I definitely get massive input in English (from books, YT videos, TV series etc), while at the same time though for Swedish I'm struggling a bit, and so there are days in which I'm on fire and hyped to get started the new lesson or listening interesting audio materials, and days instead in which even listening 5 minutes of my fav podcast is a total struggle. Any tips you could offer for Brazilian Portuguese? Recommended books, websites, KZread channels, resources etc.? Anything for beginner-lower intermediate level would be very helpful. Cheers!

@@Nomihc try watching Novelas from Brazil. I recommend some like A Dona do Pedaço, Avenida Brasil, and A Força do Querer for some authentic Portuguese like how people actually talk in Brazil. If you look up GloboPlay you can find these online pretty easily. GloboPlay should include a lot of things from sports to movies to Novelas to even news cast i believe. Tips, i can think of try to copy everything you hear and try to imitate it as close as possible to what you heard. Read books out loud. Make sure you get probably around 10-30 new vocab words to learn every day. Basic stuff.

@AK92 Thank you for the advice! I’ll check out GloboPlay. I’m currently watching a series I found on KZread from 2002 called Malhação. It’s entertaining and I find myself understanding a little more with each episode. My main thing is improving my listening comprehension which I’m sure will happen with more time. He had an American tutor in his teens (as he mentioned). He is friends with David Mansaray, so he may be able to put on a good London accent at the very least. :)

If I may add something I feel like the importance of the quality of the source is never mentioned but is crucial. at least for me. I watch a lot vlogs here on youtube and I feel like if you rely only on them to learn. That would be difficult to speak properly. But It is a excellent tool to make the language enjoyable and work on things like vocabulary, oral comprehension, accents, with an immersion like experience.

To me, finding comprehensible input that I find interesting is half the battle. If I can manage to find fascinating content in a language, I know I'll make good progress. If I'm having trouble finding it, it's usually going to be long battle.

I’ve followed Luca for the last 12 years on KZread when I was working hard to improve my language skills in Italian. He’s very much like my great uncle who was a hyper polyglot in almost 20 languages. My origin is west African, Cameroonian and Nigerian. On my Cameroonian side my great uncle learnt the main European languages like German, Spanish, French, Greek, Russian, along with the many languages spoken in Cameroon and Nigeria. At school i hated foreign languages. It didn’t interest me. I was forced to do French then Spanish. It wasn’t until age 22 I began taking foreign languages seriously. Now I’m at level B-C in Italian, B in Greek and A on German. Luca’s methods have been so helpful.

WHAT how does he speak English that well? I almost thought that he was English for a moment. That's amazing that he can learn so many languages. My complete idol lol

The EASY LANGUAGES channels are great for compressible input. They have a lot of different languages to choose from.

Awesome video. For my Spanish learning, I've switched from Duolingo and some other stuff on the side to comprehensible input. I keep track of all the input in a sheet.. I'm on day 31 now. On average I'm getting in 123 minutes per day. I also try to switch up the level of input. Many of the things I really like can be a bit too hard still. So I'm watch series in Spanish with Spanish subs (pretty hard), Spanish vlogs for learning Spanish (intermediate) but also Pepe Pig in Spanish. Ofc the last one is easy and I couldn't stand to watch it 2 hours per day. But children programs are really awesome for your vocabulary in my opinion.

I used somewhat of a bi-directional translation method myselef when I was writting my dissertation. Put wikipedia page into google translate from english to russian, then back from russian to english. Then spend time trying to rewrite and paraphrase the newly broken version of original. Never got flagged for any plagiarism, lol.

As I've recently begun teaching American accented English...i must say his accent is impressive. Like raised in the US impressive.

¿Por qué no las dos? If you want to focus on one, and you really don't feel pulled toward one more than the other... I guess the (annoying and repetitive) question is why learn either, and what do you want to do with it? My guess is that you'd have more opportunities to make use of Spanish than French, although that could change if you live down the street from an expat community or you plan on visiting Paris anytime soon. I've been working on Spanish for 25 years, and French only within the past year or two in any serious sense. I'm surprised as how quickly French is coming to me (so far). Maybe it's just the Latin-based discount I'm getting courtesy of Spanish: verb conjugations and tenses, reflexives, personal/object pronouns, how to use negation and time-adverbs like "now" or "often"... that's all pretty much the same on a conceptual level between Spanish and French. Not to mention the huge overlap in vocabulary. Often the specific words are exactly the same, or at least close enough that you know they came from the same Latin root. I'm assuming the same would generally hold true for Italian, too. French has that reputation for difficult spelling/pronunciation, which I guess is true compared to Spanish, but compared to the house-of-horrors that is English orthography, that might not be saying much. For me personally, that reputation seems over-hyped. As long as I don't unintentionally try to apply English rules to French pronunciation, it's not so bad. There are some general patterns to it, and I've developed an intuitive "feel" for it with a relatively small amount of exposure.

Yes since Spanish is very close to Italian. @Luca Lampariello even mentioned years back in one of his videos, how he didn't even really need to Spanish in Spain, it just sort of rubbed off on him.

You could pick up Spanish since you speak Italian fluently. After reaching a good level of Spanish you can dedicate to learn French properly since it's a bit more complicated in promunciation. :)

Hello people, I have the ambition to become a polyglot, too. I am 34 now. My languages are: German (native), English (at least C1), Spanish (B2~C1), Polish (B1~B2), French (B1), Italian [A2], and Russian [A1]. I do not consider myself a polyglot yet, since my language skills are still a bit too mediocre, but I have the desire to reach at least a B2 level in Spanish, Polish, French and Italian before I hit 40. I do not plan to learn more languages except maybe Russian in the far future, since it is already difficult enough to maintain five foreign languages with a full-time job and a family, but would you say that my goals are realistic or maybe I am a bit too over-ambitious also considering my age? (Unfortunately I am not such a genious like Luca, so I will never speak 11 languages lol)

This method is used in the Slavonica edition of Georgian. I am a minor polyglot. Yep, watching the movie with the transcription is how I got into Croatian, but I also had Standalone BSC to go with it. Newsfeed in several languages is a good thing. This is entirely uninspirational. Being a language nerd and dedicating your entire life to the study of languages is a complete and total waste of time. The Italian polyglot is surely a very gifted man, but part of that gift derives from a particular life choice, which is making language learning the central aspect of your life. You need extraordinary amounts of time, money and resources for that and not everyone is fortunate in those areas. Being a polyglot is an unrealistic fantasy that will never be achieved by people who are trying to earn a living, establish families and pursue social relations in their local community. I did learn French, read many French books but never met a French person and unfortunately have very bad speaking skills in it. And I am sure "nonpolyglots" have similar experiences: their language skills are largely determined by their concrete life contexts. So why are you showing people whose lives organized around learning languages at a high level? That is a very specific and rather uncommon form of life! Are they engaged in intelligence services? What is the gain or recognition that you get when you speak like a native? What is the use? In general terms what are you doing in this channel? Language entertainment??? If I were you I would be teaching the language and not going around expecting us to be impressed by polygots
