They should install gate arms at hawk signals the gate arms lowers when steady red and flash when gates rise

One town around here took out their HAWK signal and replaced it with an old fashioned red-yellow-green signal, which I like very much

whats wrong with keeping the green for go and red to stop cars? It just will go red when pedestrians press the button.

The issue is if you do that cars will need to stop for longer. And of course, that’s actually a reasonable thing, but most American traffic engineers are scared to install anything that will reduce car speeds. In my country they have a bunch of traditional light crossings and you sometimes need to stop for a while but it’s not as bad as people make out.

Problem with alternating flashing red as a 'stop unless road is clear' indication akin to a stop sign or single flashing red aspect is that alternating flashing red already has a set precedent meaning of 'stop and do not proceed until the signal goes dark' with level crossings and school buses.

This system is a lawsuit waiting to happen. I deal with this system and I don't recommend it at all. I have no idea who thought of this system but it is super dangerous.

When I come to.a hawk signal I will not go.until the flashing lights turn off. I put safety first,

I put safety first, no matter who behind me does like it For example, I never turn right on red and never turn left before the green arrow at "permissive" left turn signals.

Charles Newman so, if you have a blinking left arrow, and there are no cars coming in your direction, you will not go until it turns green? and the same with turning right on red? you do know its not dangerous to do that right? by your logic, if you can’t pay enough attention to be safe while also maintaining proper traffic flow, you need your license taken away. i can tell you’re a geriatric.
