I grew up a town over from Hershey PA, where the chocolate plant is, as well as close to the Mars factory. They have bags of imperfect candy for workers to take home, and if you don't get sick of it fast it at the very least loses a lot of the novelty pretty fast.

Interesting concept. I imagine the rind of a standard watermelon is too tough and fibrous to really be any good, and a fruit that size is probably too big for the sugar to effectively penetrate and candy the whole thing. But I have seen candied melon flesh before, and some melon varieties do grow in small, single-serving sizes. I'd be willing to give it a shot with a miniature icebox watermelon or with melon slices if I worked there.

Some candy companies sell the mistakes for a discounted price. Russel Stovers (not sure if they still do) used to sell boxes of mixed candy that was considered defective because it had gaps in the chocolate where the filling leaked out at their factories. Jelly belly started selling their 'belly flops' jelly beans in the stores but they are not really much cheaper if at all. I miss the Sara Lee bakery that used to be about an hour from my house. They had some killer sales on their stuff in the outlet.

Some factories do sell the “defective” products... There was a “mom & pop” candy factory where my grandparents used to live, that we would go to whenever we visited them! It was *SO cool* - the entire production section of the factory was enclosed by glass barriers and the 2nd floor had enclosed glass observation walkways directly over them...so people could watch everything being made without getting underfoot and they didn’t have to worry about “tours/tour guides”, or risk contamination. It was basically the best and most brilliant factory setup EVER!! (I’ve not been to other candy factories- so that might be a pretty standard thing...but it definitely blew our little kid-minds!!)😆 But in the gift shop/store section of the factory, they had bulk bins of all the “imperfect” candies, that you would buy by the lb. for a significant amount less (if you just wanted it to eat and didn’t need/want the pretty packaged candy for a gift or something.) The entire place was freakin awesome. Definitely lots of happy childhood memories there! 😁❤️😋
That made my mouth watering 🤤🤤
