How It Feels to Take ADHD Medication: First Day on Vyvanse (Elvanse)

🚀 Transform your Morning Routine with ADHD: geni.us/adhd-mornings
What it feels like to take ADHD medication? This is the story of my first day on Vyvanse (Elvanse).
I discuss the benefits and side effects I experienced like calm, focus, impulse-, and appetite control, but also headaches, blood pressure, insomnia, and sleep disturbances.
Hopefully, this helps you understand what you can expect from taking ADHD medication for the first time ever. It's never like the first few days, but it's still good to be prepared, so you know what to do.

I started taking the pill at a young age. It did change my life, until I decided to get off of it for a try. (P.s.: I am a dancer) The hunger hit way too hard each day. Binging was rampant. Regardless of how good my nutrition was, my body would never reach low enough where jumps were as easy as when I was off of the pill. This was until I started taking caffeine but still, not the same effects as vyvanse but 1/3rd of the way it was. I think the story would have been different if I had discovered. Tyrosine, PEA, Cbd oil, taurine, Green tea extract. (Pre workouts like zipfizz) These get the job done 1/2 like the pill. Sometimes later in the day better than vyvanse. During this time however, I did learn much better ways to listen and be productive. Meditation through my dancing rather than “bad thoughts” life is a creative process and critiques are ok. I really love dancing and at the moment I have returned to taking medication since I am now in a professional dance setting where it’s best to be low body fat to decrease risk of injury and laser focused to get the job done. Also, ballet is usually a short career due to body load. We will see how my med will affect it. I am curious as to how my adhd diagnosis for Germany will go. Need to see a psychiatrist

@@lilydot642 Hey Lily, I understand how it could be disheartening. I was realy anxious before I took the medication with questions in my head like "what if it doesn't work" and "what if i got miss diagnosed" etc. I decided the week before that I was going to try my best to think longterm. If 30mg didn't work I was going to consult with my psychatrist and try higher doses. If that didn't work I was going to consider trying other types of medication. If that didn't work I was going to consider that maybe I have been miss diagnosed and that at least I have ticked adhd as something that I checked out and then i'd consider getting tested for other developmental disorders. It's really hard to stay positive I understand cause it's so frustrating when you've lived so long with any condition that you're so in the dark about (feelings of your past being stolen etc.) Please don't give up and try and try to keep moving forward. I feel Neurodiverse people are part of a community and we should all help and encourage each other. Good luck X

I’m 40 and just got diagnosed with ADHD. The first week taking Vyvanse was unreal. My mind is so much calmer and I was able to just enjoy being in the moment. I was able to just sit and have lunch with my wife and not be bombarded with 15 thoughts at once. If I had only started taking this in school. It was a real life changer for me and I’m very excited for the future just living my life.

I started on 30mg and felt nothing. Didn’t do a thing, and I wanted to cry. We were supposed to increase to 50, but try finding that in the US right now. I had leftover 30s, so I took two. And I nearly cried for another reason. THIS is what I’m capable of? I’ve owned my own law firm for 14 years. I have a literary agent and have published 8 books. But NOW it doesn’t feel like I’m always on the edge, at the last minute, procrastinating even when I know the ramifications. To toot my own horn, I’ve done very good without medication. I feel like I’m going to be a beast with it.

Thanks, this gives me some hope! I started taking it a few days ago. The first day, I felt a little restless and agitated like if I had too much coffee. But my focus (or the lack of) seemed the same. And in the following days, I almost felt nothing. I was already getting concerned that it might not be the right medication or that it might not even be ADHD and that's why it's not working. So it's good to see other people are having a similar experience but eventually feel something after increasing the dose. I'll keep on taking for the next weeks until my next appointment and then talk to my doctor what's the best course of action. How have you been since then? Did you manage to keep this feeling up or did the effect vanish after a while? Did you continue on a higher dosage?

My Adderall, which I've been on for about 5 year, went on backorder last week, so right now I'm remembering what it was like before I started taking it. It's a miracle of God that I managed to get a college degree. The focus from the drug has wained slightly since I ramped up to the dosage I'm at, but it still helps keep my life manageable, and this week has definitely highlighted just how helpful it is.

Got diagnosed this year, age 42 and started my medication in June. The first week with the appropriate medication is absolutely a once in a lifetime experience. I also felt I was reborn on that week. Everything was smooth and felt extraordinary. It's like being in flow state all day long. Now that I'm 3 months in, I don't feel the medication at all, it became transparent. But I know that if I skip some days during the week-end, or if I'm trying to pack a luggage way past bed time (i.e when medication has run off), I'm all over the place once again.

The first script was Ritalin LA 10 mg and I really didn't notice much of a difference at all...may have had a day or two with slightly better focus. I'm hoping they increase the strength a bit (still 10 mg now) so I can be more focused, less scattered. May I ask the strength they started you on?

@@Rollwithit699 For me, diagnosed at 48 and just started on Elvanse at 30mg for week 1, then 40 mg for weeks 2 and 3, before I will see my psychiatrist again to decide whether to go up, down or stay the same. Today is my first day on 40 mg and it hasn't kicked in fully yet. I found that 30 mg worked very well the first few days but then less so the last few - although, due to our dog having had minor surgery, he disturbed my usual sleep pattern and I had less time available for self-care (exercise, hobbies and not even time to shave/shower one day). I really think that sleep and self-care are essential factors in my response to Elvanse, as the situation was much better even on 30mg when I had more time yesterday. In case it is any use, the info leaflet I received with Elvanse (in the UK at least) states, "The recommended dose at the start of treatment is 30mg, but your doctor may decide to start you on 20mg. Later on your doctor may increase the dose. The maximum daily dose is 70mg." I should also mention that I am still taking Venlafaxine 150mg prolonged release also (had been prescribed this previously for depression), so this may make my case different too. I believe that the long-term plan will be for me to try to gradually stop Venlafaxine, as the depression may have been related to my undiagnosed, untreated ADHD. Good luck with finding your optimal medication balance!

If you feel afraid, or have anxiety or experience higher heart rate make sure to talk to your doctor, or any health care professional you trust. Knowing the side effects to not worry about genuinely helps. I should have started two days ago, yes I kept making excuses to myself and letting myself down, partially I also wanted to make sure I understood what I should look out for to be concerned about. @Bellana I'm glad it's working for you! Honestly it didn't go well for me at all. I took it for 3 days and had a terrible tension headache all 3 days. On the third day my heart was pounding through my chest. My chest was super hot and I got really sweaty. My BP skyrocketed to 155/108 (I never have BP issues). I think my anxiety played a part but I truly thought I was dying. Needless to say I'm no longer on it. It just isn't for everyone. I will say later that day after I didn't die I felt relatively good but it's not worth it FOR ME. I was also on a SSRI and have read that they dont mix whatsoever so Im not sure. Best of luck!!

What helps me keep the benefits of medication is to do breathing exercises, some meditation. I know for us with ADHD meditation is almost impossible so you can look up different techniques like breathing in different ways, keeping your eyes half open. nadi shodhana is a different style of meditation that can help those who have difficulty focusing

Second day: I remembered the laundry in the dryer, from the day before, jumped out of bed 20 minutes after I took my Ritalin, and folded the laundry and put it away, before my family woke up and started a new load. I feel much more balanced. I got my half dose yesterday after I got my prescription, I did drive on the motorway at night without being sensory overloaded by the lights and other cars, I normally hate driving on the motorway in the dark, as it is a sensory nightmare but it isn't with ADHD meds. And my binge eating disorder I have struggled with all my life, the impulses for a dopamine hit with food is gone, I eat when I am hungry and stop when I am full, I don't eat after dopamine anymore, only after nutrition. This is the biggest thing and the one who has caused me the most health issues over the years.

The rush of energy when it hits it really helpful though and I use the first hour when it hits to do housework. I know that I'm going to need a heavy dose so the plan for me is to increase it each month depending on how I'm feeling. I'm excited for this journey.

  • @juliachild9377

    @juliachild9377

    10 ай бұрын

It's important to pay careful attention to how you're thinking about the medication's efficacy, especially in the beginning. It may turn out that you do need a higher-than-average dosage, but you don't actually know that, not at day two. Try to not be so quick to assume what you're going to need or not need. If you assume you're going to need the maximum dosage before you've even started treatment, you're making it more likely that you'll request increases when you don't actually need them. Do your best to avoid hyper focusing on the numbers and focus on symptom relief because you will inevitably develop some degree of tolerance regardless of dosage. Also, it's vital to recognize that the rewarding side effects are not directly proportional to symptom relief. Each time you think you need a dosage increase, ask yourself if you feel that way because your current dosage is genuinely not enough or if you're chasing those rewarding side effects. Increasing your dosage beyond what's maximally effective for you will actually worsen symptoms and you'll be more likely to develop dependence and start abusing the medication. Best of luck.

I would like to know your input. I also feel that sense of brightness but also distractibility, irritability and when I am in a public place, overwhelmed by all the sounds in that location, I can get distracted by someone's conversation, then someone's movement etc. My symptoms have changed over time and depending on location, as a youth I was like a tomboy very active and in people's "faces" etc, as I went to school, zoned out and had immense difficulty in high school. All that being said, when I took Vyvanse I felt that brightness initially return, however I also felt more calm, like back and forth. The effects of being more calm and focused were more prominent several days later, but still felt that brightness. Could this be because the dose is too low? I also felt more vulnerable to being distracted, but not as prominent as being off meds. What is your experience and advice? I also noticed that the headaches and some nervousness was remedied by eating regularly. I had also stopped caffeine, so that could have been a factor at play as well. Thank you for your videos, as they are helping validate my experience.

Did you track your blood pressure? I have started at 10mg and after 4 days I tried upping to 20mg. That day my BP tracked at 124/102. It stayed up at 122/90's for about 4 hours.

Yeah! Please be careful! I do get a little higher BP from the meds, but it's okay because I usually have low BP. At this point at has stabilized a lot more though, so definitely take your time adjusting!

They put me on Ritalin, and I felt nothing. Then I got Elvanse, and the resistance to do stuff subsided a little. And that was it, that's the only discernible benefit so far. Still chaotic tangential thinking, impulsive and reckless behaviour, forgetfulness, lack of planning/organisation, no sense of time, difficulty to follow conversations and so forth and so forth. I feel cheated. Why don't the meds work like they do for others? What do I do now?

My doctor switched me from 30mg of Adderall XR to 60mg of Vyvanse. Still about the same. Not much in terms of noticeable effects. Really disappointing because of the price of the med compared to the Adderall. I wish I could just find a med that works for me. It does help some with the hyperactivity but just not enough. I find it harder to be hyper but it's still really possible lol. I wish it was working properly for me. About to switch to the other class of meds even though they cause some pretty bad side effects as a child. I just want a med that works for me. I see all sorts of videos where this med or that one worked and find myself wishing that was me.

Well my first day was this intense feeling of something going on with my body, avout 2 hours after taking it. Me dealing with what feels like an onset of a headache and stomach pain while wondering if I should take nauseous medication. Then I was extremely sleepy once the initial effects started to calm down, for about 4 or 5 hours I slept and woke up feeling worse than I had yet. Once awake, I got up and ate dinner and started feeling overall better towards the end of the night. Hopefully none of these things happen today as I'll be heading to my job in about an hour.

@@AntoniasUniverse You were right about these effects lessening. I feel less sleepy but the effects of the drug wearing off fairly early in the day and my distractability increasing. I walked into a car at work yesterday because I was looking the other direction when I should have been focusing on whats in front of me. I do believe I'll need to increase from this starting dose to 50mg to see if that helps me maintain focus better. I'll finish out this 30 day prescription, though it will be rough.

I currently receive 4 x 20 mg Retalin every day, but i can feel that i have changed extremely on them and quickly become irritated and angry and sweat extremely on them. Want to hear what u think about my choice to switch to Elvanse? Hope to get an answer no matter. Wish u an great weekend und grus nach Deutschland. Cheers from Robin xx

Hey Robin! I've definitely felt angry and irritated at times too, so I know what you mean. Unfortunately, I have no idea how Ritalin compares to Elvanse in terms of that at the moment, but I've read about a lot of people trying different medications until they find the right medication and dose that allows them to have the most positive effects with the least negative side effects (there are always some). I think it's worth a shot to ask your psych if you can try Elvanse, especially if you can afford it. If it goes good, it might help you a lot and pay for itself, you know? I hope it works for you and you find a solution!

My first day on Elvanse 30g, The best way I can describe it was it felt like I was floating, was so dizzy, spaced out and felt so sick. I’m on my 4th day and throughout the day I’ve gotten more and more nauseous and in general feeling really light headed, I have 0 appetite at all and I already take meds that decrease my appetite anyways. Does the symptoms get better over time? I got diagnosed March last year and I’m considering just not doing meds for adhd because this is my 4th time changing medication and I just want to see an effect

That sounds to me like you might be on too higher dose to start with and might need to start a little lower. The thing with the nausea...are you making sure to have your meds with food? I find if getting nausea...having with food helps it stop. Hopefully you've been able to make some progress...but yeah trying a lower dose might help ease in...like 10-20mgs to start till your body adjusts.
