@@bflkurby1 the doctor name is Barry James Marshall. He was trying to prove that stomach ulcers were caused by a bacte rium called Heliobacter pylori. Nobody believed that bacteria could survive the acidic environment of the stomach. So he and his collaborator Robin Warren didn't receive much funding for the project. His initial study failed, because of a study error. But he was so convinced he was right, that he drank a broth containing Heliobactor Pylori, after which he developed symptoms of stomach ulcers within 3 days, thus proving his theory. Hereafter Marshall and Warren discovered that spiral bacteria were present in about 95% of the patients with stomach ulcers.

That was so cool! The bacteria was H. (helio-something? My Latin sucks) pylori, IIRC. There's quite a history in medicine of doctors performing experiments on themselves, at considerable risk. Ethics guidelines on self-experimentation are a lot looser, especially if you don't tell anyone you're doing the experiment until it's over.

But the drug prevents, not cures. Shouldn't it be administer the drug (not in the control group) and then induce the migraine? But then, the drug might not be an universal migraine stopper. That is, it might not prevent all kinds of migraines, or not the ones induced by a stron drug like nitroglycerine. If the hypothesis is the drug prevents the naturally occurring migraines in chronic migraine patients, then your (or house's) approach is incorrect.

I was born with hydrocephalus, and throughout my childhood, up until I was 10, I would suffer from extreme migraines. Take it from me, 9:07 is as accurate as it gets. There is a moment, a few seconds at most, when the pain begins. Before actually reacting to the pain itself, it's inconceivable how fast it can climb. One moment you're okay, the next you feel like your forehead wants to detach itself from your head. I remember that screaming would help me cope with the pain. I wasn't actually screaming because of the pain, but the action of screaming would in fact decrease the pain.

What people seem to get wrong is that to be a narcissist you have to have an INFLATED sense of self importance...kinda like arrogance is un-backed confidence of a fashion. So if you actually are that smart, important, and right it doesn’t actually make you a narcissist...it just makes people who don’t like that you’re correct all the time describe you as such as a pejorative.

@@cricketknowall its the fact he went for an obscure journal to publish his work, coupled with the fact he is beong funded by a company that stands to profit off a drug that claims big despite not delivering. House was hitting him at a purely ethical level. Dont infer anything else in this. Its like internet search engines, google is top followed by bing. Then you have a whole slew of others very few people know about. The audience of that journal eas small. And people did say the episode showed it was also published in a different language, which will make it harder for his peers to look at. Its a failing of the scientific method just to make a buck.
