How Israel Was Created

To understand the current war in Gaza, you have learn about the founding of the state of Israel and what that meant for the Palestinians who had been living there. Before Benjamin Netanyahu or Hamas, there was Zionism, the Balfour Declaration and the Nakba. This is how Israel was created.

And for those in younger generations the availability of quality information far exceeds that that was available in say the 80s or 90s. Take the war in Ukraine for example, the media coverage will have its way with bias just as it did in historic wars, but when have we ever had up-to-the-day accurate information streams from an ongoing major world event? Curated and distributed by the people living it. I just think it is easy to write off younger generations as ignorant and blinkered as so many generations have before - but it’s not necessarily the reality. And those of us who have a natural interest in historic and political subjects are relatively spoilt with the number of sources with which we can balance their biases and form an opinion.

Watching a documentary that presents the formation of modern Israel in such a grim light is personally jarring for me. I had long held the view of Israel as a sanctuary for a people who had suffered immeasurable atrocities. To suddenly be confronted with the idea that its foundation is marred by acts of violence, terrorism, and potentially even genocide against Palestinians shakes the core of what I thought I knew. It's like experiencing a form of betrayal, where a narrative I held to be virtuous is revealed to have dark undertones. It's not just an intellectual exercise in reassessing history; it's a gut punch that makes me question the stories we're told and the stories we choose to believe. It's a painful reckoning with complexity in a world that's easier to navigate in black and white.

This "documentary" forgets to mention a lot of important facts though. Such as the arab pogroms that had been going on for 100s of years against jews in the middle east. They forget to mention that one million jews in the middle east were driven off in their own "al nakba" event. But somewhow that doesn't qualify. They also don't elaborate on "majority arab" - that's only if you count the whole mandatory palestine which is huge, in the areas where jews settled they were the majority. They also don't mention that arab leaders co operated with Hitler to set up their own "final solution" in the middle east. With this background it becomes very understandable that the 2 million jews (out of 1 million were middle eastern natives) wanted their own state and no to be a tiny minority in an arab state. Also, the video doesn't mention that all arab countries declared war on Israel on it's inception, instead it makes it out as if Israel just willy nilly attacked the poor arabs and drove them off.

When I was ten my Mother, of English of Irish Jewish heritage explained all about our (British) total foul-up with Israel. Dreadful, savage killing of the Palestinians broke out. The sheer Arrogance of Balfour was staggering. Currently our PM is dismaying around 75% of the British people by joining Mr Boden in refusing calling for a cease fire in the current 'War on Children'. Many of our Jewish population are in the protest marches. We have been poor friends of Israel, turning a blind eye whilst paranoia has morphed into Israeli Govt psychosis. Point 1: Israel is not a European country. It is a Middle Eastern State. Point 2: from the outset Israel has been suspicious of all its neighbours, firing on them and impounding other people's property (murder & theft) only to be shocked if a bomb was returned. The Palestinians, meanwhile live in the open air prison of Gaza and under constant threat of losing their land or being murdered by illegal settlers in the West Bank. What now? A couple of troubled states are now doing an Israel......

So in other words the British stuck their noses in, and tried to "fix" something which wasn't broken. Chose a side, pitted one against the other, caused the conflict resulting in carnage, chaos and bloodshed. Then closed up shop and fled back to the mother land. The British are directly responsible for the snowball effect still happening today. I've learnt something new.

I get what you're saying here and while I agree that the British only made things worse, but saying that the situation wasn't broken is only true for Palestinians. Jewish people were certainly not doing well for thousands of years after being kicked out of their homeland by the Romans. Something needed to be done. The British just botched the way in which they helped Jews return home and gain self-determination. I personally don't know what I would have done myself, but saying nothing needed to be done is a rather ignorant take, no?

Not really, Ottoman's decided to join Germany in WW1 by attacking the Russians who were allies with the British. They failed in a conquest for land and as a result the Ottoman Empire (including modern day Israel & Palestine) became controlled by the British. While the British did a poor job of separating the land, it was their land won through a war which they did not initiate. While these facts don't justify what has happened since, war and conquest has occurred with every country on Earth. Every country today has borders which were formed and changed throughout history in the same way, and in the case of Israel the British were not the ones to initiate the conflicts that led to the exchange of land. This video is very much a one sided view of the history and should be seen as an opinion piece.

You weren't taught it because this video is made up propaganda. You've COMPLETELY ignored thousands of years of well documented history. If you want to ignore the bible and that God created the Jewish homeland thousands of years ago when He promised it to Abraham (2042 BC) and his descendants forever, fine. But quick history lesson for you, son. There is substantial evidence showing israelites in 1250 bc entered Canaan and began conquering it (just as the Bible says). Jump a head to King David who reigned over the JEWISH kingdom of ISRAEL from 1000 to 962 bce. Eventually, the kingdom split and the two halves were ultimately conquered by Assyria and Babylon. But Jews still lived in Isreal under occupation. After Babylon was the Medo-Persians then Alexander the great around 329bc. After them the Romans. Roman Emperor Hadrian changed the provincial administrative name of Judaea to Palestine to erase the Jewish presence in the land but the JEWS were still there. Then Eventually the Ottoman Empire conquered the Byzantine empire and the region fell under their control. Many jews were still their and after the defeat of the Ottoman empire Jews around the world were allowed to return to THEIR ancestral homeland. Your video is an embarrassment and very transparent. Anyone that studies history sees it for the BS propaganda it is. Anyone who has doubt, go research the "west bank" and why it's called that. It's real name going back THOUSANDS OF WELL DOCUMENTED YEARS is Judea and Samaria.

When you attack a country militarily, you expect to lose land. Germany lost a ton of land after WW2. Hungary was reduced to 1/3 of its initial size after WW1 and so on. You can't expect to attack a country and when you lose to go on without consequences. Arabs attacked the jews for decades. The entire conflict is simply a tooth for tooth one, started so long ago nobody knows who started it anymore. Also, from what I know, Israel took all their current lands after they were attacked, not vice versa.

At the same time, millions of Poles were expelled from their homeland, when a part of Poland was annexed by the USSR. This was absolutely tragic. However, the descendants of those people don’t call themselves refugees, they are fully integrated members of the community where their ancestors were forced to relocate. The Arab countries neighbouring Israel seem to spectacularly fail at it. No one should live in a refugee camp through generations. Syria had many decades to integrate those, who fled Palestine and their children. Yet it looks like it prefers to keep people in misery throughout generations, call “refugees” those, who were born in Syria to parents, who were also born there, and keep the generational trauma and hatred alive.

By 1948 the inhabitants were fighting among themselves to the extent that the British just wanted to get rid of the problem. In accordance with UN instructions the Brits granted independence to both the Jews and the Arabs in designated areas and basically washed their hands of the whole affair. After that, who "owned" what was decided by military power (so what else is new?). Incidentally, Jordan took the opportunity to "own" some of Palestine for itself (the West Bank) and Egypt took the Gaza Strip. The Arab inhabitants of Palestine were pretty much double screwed.

When the fighting erupted, Ghandi went into a hunger strike, and that was long after the british left. Remember the famous 1947 speech by Nehru..." At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom". Nehru would never say anything nice about Pakistan, why would he. Same with Pakistan. One observes Independence Day on 14th August, the other 15th August. Surely you aren’t implying they should just be able to come back later and say “well, technically we’re from here, so we can take whatever land we’d like.” That’s essentially what they’ve done anyway, and continue to do. The United States stole land from indigenous people too. Should they just be able to show back up now and say “hey, you’re on our land, and we’d like it back, so scram.” I imagine that wouldn’t go over so well, and therein lies the problem. @@VS257 That's not how it happened. Judea was a thorn in Rome's side for nearly two centuries. It was after multiple Jewish uprisings that the Romans finally ousted them and sent the remaining population of fewer than 30,000 Jews dispersed throughout the Roman Empire. They re-named the region "Palestine" and the Arab population of the region (who had never given Rome much trouble) were allowed to stay. They became known as Palestinians. Most of them were Christians at the time and the rest practiced Judaism. So the people we call Palestinians never were settlers of the area. They were always there along with the Jews. One were descendants of Abraham through Isaac. The others were descendants of Abraham through Ishmael. The fact is that it's the ancestral home of BOTH Israelis and Palestinians and for this crap to ever reconcile they BOTH are going to have to accept that truth. And Hamas is only there to take advantage of the situation as a base of operations for their own radical religious objective of killing all Jews.

Yeah the scumbag grandad thought it was extremely funny when he was talking about his crimes he committed killing the innocent men women and children of the Palestinian people who we're most likely fighting with stones in their hands, the IDF are the biggest cowardly bunch of men and women in the world hands down honestly, fighting a people who have no weaponry to fight back with when you yourselves are equipped with some of the most latest military hardware weapons and cutting edge technology in the world, and because of this you are going to have certain individuals who will stand up and fight and protect their families and their homeland regardless of the amount of weapons they may have provided by hamas Lebanon and other groups labelled as terrorists by the west, I'm sick and tired of the famous phrase the zionist apartheid state always uses and that is that Israel has a right to defend themselves, so what about the Palestinians? Do they not have that same right also? In their eyes obviously it's a big NO, but regardless of everything that maybe against them in terms of military hardware technology and so forth, the Palestinian muslims will always defend their families their homeland their right and their honour against a zionist apartheid Israeli state which is the most cowardly bunch of so called men and women in the world, it's gotten so bad lately that even Christians are also targeted nowadays, if your a Palestinian whether your muslim or Christian regardless it don't matter to them, they will target you, just take a moment and think deeply about if the shoe was on the other foot, OMG, if the muslims we're doing this to the Israelis/Jews, storming in their homes in the middle of the nights, killing their loved ones, arresting little little children with guns rifles in your faces, bombing and killing civilians with drones and rockets, bulldozing your homes, thieving your homes and your land, the list goes on and on and on, I could go on all night but I'm most certainly sure and understand where you know I'm coming from with the list of endless atrocities and crimes committed against the Palestinians, now as I said, if this was the Palestinian muslims doing this to the Israelis/Jews, we would have the whole world and I mean the enire world coming on top of our head's, and this has been going on for 75 year's against the Palestinian people, and then the west calls the likes of hamas and fatah terrorists, the double standards and the hypocrisy is beyond anything I've ever witnessed, may Allah the almighty destroy the oppressers and give glad tidings and victory to the believers

Theres been some interesting findings over the last decade about Khrushchev seeing the massive spending as a “future problem” for the country as a whole and it’s been speculated this was what started fellow Soviet leaders to oust him because “it was a sign of weakness they didn’t want ANYONE to see.” While Brezhnev kept up the “appearances” the staunch communist wanted, his people secretly knew they were spending way more than what they would be about to recoup long term (hence they gave up on going to the moon). China has the benefit of this Soviet hindsight. What’s interesting is how China has gone “hybrid-communistic” and how well they will be able to “rein it in” when needed. The British did not CREATE the tensions the Jewish had already decided to converge on the area - but we should not have bowed to the pressure of the LoN or the USA and we should have never entertained the idea that a Jewish state was remotely realistic - in truth it would have made no difference though as the USA has and had too much influence with the UN. Want to take a look at the other "British" tensions like say Pakistan and India? Take a long look at how these people hated each other and that the ONLY thing to be done was CREATE separate states - see whay i mean? if you carve up the place because of indigenous tensions you're the bad guy and if you leave you're also the bad guy.

This video is only explaining the palestinian narrative. Most palestinians had to flee their homes due to the war that they and the neighboring countries started in 1948. You forgot to mention that many jews have been massacred several times between 1900 and 1948 by arabs. Around 850 000 jews used to live in other middle eastern countries, and were oppressed by the arab regimes and later forced to flee their homes. Now almost no jews live in those countries. You make it sound like it was obvious that the arabs rejected the partition plan by the UN, when it was actually a great chance for palestinians to finally get independence. Yes, there were fewer jews, but after world war 2, millions of jewish refugees wanting to return to their homeland, the arabs should have welcomed them. Instead, all the arab countries attacked the same people who had just been haunted and murdered during the holocaust. I am not saying the palestinians didn’t suffer, because they did. But this video is not telling the whole story. The palestinians had many chances of creating their own state, but rejected every offer, because they want the whole land, and don’t want to co-exist with Israel.

If that can be justified by a warped ideology and supported by an evil overlord, then all the better. Iran certainly has a lot to answer for as the driver and financial base of much of this fanatical violence against Israel. It must be said, however, that the Israelis are not exactly squeaky clean, though in no way do their actions justify the atrocities that are unfolding right now. The Palestinian situation is nothing more than a weak excuse for these "Jihadi butchers", who doubtless got their sanction from Tehran for other reasons (deep hatred of Israel; to undermine a nuclear agreement between the Saudis, the US and Israel etc.). I'm suprised you're writing this bc it's not brought up as a point anymore. Look up what really happened in 1948. This alone should show you the Arabs in the area, if really wanted to fight, would've stepped in 1946-47, when word of the first massacres and expulsions were happening. At that time 200,000 Palestinians were expelled. Read abt it from different sources. In 1948, there was no "war" of combatants vs. combatants, and no historian now denies this. What really happened is the "Arabs" (what is that exactly? Sudanese speak Arabic and they are "black") weren't interested in fighting, ill-prepared (every history book, no matter the persuasion, says this), and rearraging themselves after colonialism. They were simply responding to the massacres happening in the villages next door! Village by village, the Haganah and Irgun plundered and massacred it's inhabitants. Heck, even mainstream Isreaelis will point this out, and so do historians. So your comment is not only inaccurate, it shows you deny what's really happening. Torture in prisons, raids in refugee camps, massacres, like the Flour Massacre last month (again, every news organization covered this-now undeniable).

Not a lot of people did until recently. I remember growing up in the 90's watching conflict at the Gaza strip and thinking "the images I'm being shown (Israel with uniforms, tanks weapon, Palestinians fighting back throwing rocks and trying to sneak through gaps in the fence with) do not match the narrative" It is an occupation a cruel, slow burning agonising occupation that really has nothing to do with Palestinians as a people. They are just the ones who happened to be there. My heart has always ached for the Palestinian people. What makes it worse is, the Israeli state was created to give refuge and home to European Jews displaced during World War II, almost like a gift of apology for the holocaust, so for those people to turn around and inflict this on other people after what they'd been through is just... no words. I have no words. In no way am I supporting the current wave of violence on Israel by Hamas. I could not think of anything worse. One must always stop and think about who is funding such attacks and the TRUE agenda. Because this is not simply "Palestine fighting back".

Look a little further back in your history book. The word Palestine derives from Philistia, the name given by Greek writers to the land of the Philistines, who in the 12th century BCE occupied a small pocket of land on the southern coast, between modern Tel Aviv-Yafo and Gaza. The name was revived by the Romans in the 2nd century CE in “Syria Palaestina,” designating the southern portion of the province of Syria, and made its way thence into Arabic, where it has been used to describe the region at least since the early Islamic era. The name Palestine has long been in popular use as a general term to denote a traditional region, but this usage does not imply precise boundaries. The perception of what constitutes Palestine’s eastern boundary has been especially fluid, although the boundary frequently has been perceived as lying east of the Jordan River, extending at times to the edge of the Arabian Desert. The current boundaries, shcih include the current state of Israel, were defined by the British.

This is the Palestine perspective, not necessarily the "right perspective". The ancient Romans pinned the name on what was then the Land of Israel. In 135 CE, after stamping out the province of Judea’s second insurrection, the Romans renamed the province Syria Palaestina-that is, “Palestinian Syria.” They did so as a punishment, to obliterate the link between the Jews and Israel with their hated monotheism. “Palaestina” referred to the Philistines, whose home base had been on the Mediterranean coast. This is recorded, factual history. While interesting, this video would have one believe that Hertzl dreamed up a Jewish homeland fifty years before the reality, when in fact the Jews have been trying to return to the land they believe was granted to them by Moses for more than 3,000 years:( Read the prayer offered on Passover-it ends with; "Next year in Jerusalem." The situation is horrid for all involved and there are enough bad guys to go around, but there is also real, documented, unbiased, recorded history to be had. A 15 minute very biased video does no one any good.

The British government said in public they were doing things to calm the violence, but behind the scenes, everything was done to promote conflict between Jews and Muslims. Britain had promised Arabia was now for the Arabs after Britain had used the Arabs to defeat the German/Ottoman empire during WW1. So how does Britain go back on its word and defeat Arabia? Left unchecked, Arabia, with all its vast wealth from colossal oil reserves, could grow to eclipse Western powers someday. Especially when one-quarter of the world's population was Muslim. Muslims and Christians had been at war for over a thousand years. From the start (1918), Britain went into Palestine by force until war finally broke out in 1936, and hundreds of Muslim towns were massacred, and Jews took their homes. At this time (1936), the population of Palestine was only 1 million, 70% Muslims. Most of Palestine was empty land. Taking other people's homes and land was not necessary. I submit the violence was led, inspired, and organized by Britain and the US for a reason, knowing it would create a perpetual war in the middle of Arabia. A perpetual war between Jews and Muslims. Nothing is more destabilizing to a nation (and thus weakening) than a war within or near its borders. War in the middle of the Middle East would destabilize and weaken all of Arabia, thus retarding their development so as to never one day challenge the Christian white empire of the US and UK. However, to those arab nations that bow down to US interests, a few at the top of those nations would be allowed to benefit profoundly. A perpetual war keeps Israel dependent on the US and the UK for its survival. In return, the US gets a military base in the middle of the Middle East and a proxy to do all its fighting for them -- namely Israel.

This narrative is a great example of one-sided history - for example, various Arab tribes were the primary agents on the ground colluding to overthrow the Ottoman Empire, and they were happy to divide up the territory as spoils of war, if only disagreeing with the British in exactly how it was to be done. Look at the tribe given authority over Jordan, which was not local to that area -it is only non-controversial to the extent that they are Muslims dividing up and ruling over other Muslims. The full nature of persecution of Jews and their motives to found a nation state are not captured here, so it is hard to understand the sympathy many had for the Zionist cause. There were many atrocities against the Jewish people committed by local Arab peoples which are not mentioned, nor is the full story of the 1947 war, and Arab rejection of a 2-state compromise. Basically, you will not fully understand the situation from this Al-Jazeera production, though it does provide important points to consider, and the injustices committed by Zionists should not be ignored.
