I’m from Newfoundland, Canada and growing up my dad would always let me keep pet lobsters too, lol. He bought and sold lobster for a living and had a GIANT aquarium to house them in. I had my own section for the lucky ones I was allowed to save! Leon is definitely 100% a male. We had to know the sex by sight because the females have that delicious orange roe or “cheese” inside people go nuts for. The minute you opened the grocery store box and I saw that narrow tail I said you poor little guy!!! The females have much wider tails to hold all the eggs when they spawn. You never need to flip him over! :) That time when he planted the grass in front of his cave I think he was trying to woo in a female. They are incredible creatures and I enjoyed it as much as you are. I am so in love with Leon!!!! You are letting me relive my childhood and you are so kind to him! Thank you!!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Leon is definitely a male Lobster, Im a lobster fisherman from Prince Edward Island. The females look quite different when they reach the size of Leon, very wide tale, and body. with smaller claws and basically 2 pincer claws instead of a large crusher and smaller pincer. they also are usually lighter in colour, with light green and yellow hues. To really tell, under the tale at the very base are 2 small fins, on a male they are larger and stiff, on a female they are very small and wispy.

Even if you could take Leon to a remote coral area where other lobsters of his variety live, it would be a waste. The other lobsters would soon tire of hearing him tell over and over about his brush with death and how he ended up in a luxury resort where he was fed daily with great food. None of the other lobsters would believe him, and soon no others would come around, and when he came upon a group of lobsters, they would quickly spread as if they had some other important things to attend to. Leon would still be a loner. He would wish he could return to watch the cats and the pretty fishes on the other side of the room. At least where he is, he knows he has a friend.

Rewatching the Leon series and something that stood out to me was when you mentioned that releasing Leon wasn't practical. You're absolutely right, I just wanted to expand on the why a little more :). In South Carolina, you're actually a little south of the American Lobster's natural range. American Lobsters like cold, rocky water, just like what you'd find in New England down through around Virginia. Being dropped in the sandier sea of the Southeast would be pretty jarring for a species from further away. I grew up in Maine and spent a lot of time out on lobster boats as a kid, so lobsters have a special place in my heart :)
I love how you’ve saved this lobster. Look how the colour of his shell has changed! Please, please, with the bigger tank give him an environment! Live plants, a coral box he can hide in, and LIVE fish, clams, etc. Don’t feed him dead stuff. Continue to play with him, maybe some balls or something.

Ooh. Very good suggestions!
Only a suggestion: lobsters can relax or calm down much more easily by hiding under things. Maybe you could build him a shelter with rocks or dry wood. Also he could climb them like a parcour or move them to keep himself busy when he feels bored :)

Of note, as he's a Maine Lobster (the kind sold live by grocery stores), Leon's not actually from the ocean environment that you're from. He's from the northern parts of the North Atlantic (Maine, Massachusetts, Conneticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, Quebec, and Newfoundland) rather than the more equatorial regions of the southern North Atlantic and the Gulf Coast (Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Carribean, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Alabama, and Mississippi). That means that releasing him in the Carolina Coasts would be like setting someone from Europe down in the Phillipines.

@@aak1992 Plus the things he's feeding are already dead, and would've been eaten by somebody one way or another. It's why I don't care for live feeding with predator animals like snakes. There are other alternatives that result in a quicker, less painful death for the feeder animal (E.G. the cerebral/spinal separation procedure they do on frozen/thaw feeders, which is near instantaneous death), and ways to feed where the predator doesn't know the difference. When you feed live, it's not any more natural, because it's not a wild predator going out in search of a meal in its natural environment, where there's also always an equally fair chance the prey gets away. It's you going out of your way to make sure something suffers an unnecessarily awful death in an impossible circumstance. The appeal to nature argument here falls flat on its face.

I had heard of people buying lobsters and releasing them back into the ocean, but realized how pointless that could be, after your first video. Leon had such limited mobility due to the rubber bands and I imagine living in such a cramped tank, it seems unlikely they would have survived. I get why some are suggesting that Leon should be returned to the ocean, but as long as you're taking good care of Leon, I don't think there's anything wrong with keeping them.
@SuAva

And even if he is ready to be released, and there's a safe way and a safe spot for him to be released, being right there in Brady's tank for the rest of his life is a hell of a lot better than tied up in a restaurant tank waiting to be boiled alive!
@imzadi83fanvids7

Agreed. And all it would cost to put a lobster back into the ocean where he could be caught again seems pointless. Especially since he was bought from a store which will continue to sell lobsters anyway. So yes, it would be potentially "saving" (for all we know after the trauma of what he's gone through he might prefer life as a pet) Leon I think it would be better to dedicate those resources (effort, time, money) and put it towards saving the ocean habitat from which he came.

Buying lobsters and releasing them is actually a very harmful move, as it’s going to support the fishing industry and make the demand seem higher, which will cause them to produce/hunt more animals that will all find themselves in this exact position. But what this guy is doing is of course not harmful. In the contrary, he showed thousands/millions of people how lobsters feel after that traumatic journey and how interesting they actually are.

Leon is almost certainly male, considering the narrowness of the tail. The swimmerets (pleopods) in general are not a good indicator of gender. Only the front two are appreciably different between males and females. I think he'd also be a lot happier with a cave or other shelter. He's gotta feel pretty insecure out in the open all the time. This will be especially important when it is molting time. Finally, Leon will also probably be happier if you can chill the water a bit, since 65 deg F is quite close to the stress threshold temperature (68-70 deg F) where his systems will start shutting down. I think he'll also live longer at a cooler temperature. BTW, if you turn him loose in the Carolinas, he will almost certainly die when the ocean water heats up in the summer.
