depends on application of screw, many grades of Nitriding steel, Engineering Steel, Alloys, SS material etc, Hardfacing and coating/sleeves are made of Super alloys and they are many kind. Everything depends on your application and budget.

Long answer: Screw (which is essentially a threaded steel shaft) are made from drawings . Be it any drawing/design. This has nothing to do with post-use. Be it a injection molding, plastic extrusion, rubber extrusion, blow moulding, any process, any polymers, any product making machine. Feed Screw are made in same manner. Although part of plastics industry, this is not related directly to plastics processing process and polymer science. It's just Precision mechanical engineering. Send your drawing and take a real screw made from that drawing. This is on you .. where you want to use this screw. However screw manufacturer does R&D and from their Vast experience (24x7 making feed screw) they can suggest/solve/ designs/queries related to your plastic processing. Short Answer: Yes sir, injection molding screw are made in same way.
