The word Nadi is usually written as it is but it is pronounced as Nandi according to the native Fijian language. There are many other places in Fiji which has the 'n' pronunciation but there is no letter 'n' in the actual word. In most native Fijian words, like people's names and places, there has to be an 'n' pronunciation before the letter 'd' or an 'm' pronunciation before the letter 'b'. For example, Nadi pronounced as Nandi, Deuba pronounced as Deumba, Nadarivatu as Nandarivatu, Vanua Balavu as Vanua mbalavu, etc. Some letters have different pronunciations as well such as the letter c is pronounced as 'tha', and letters g and q as 'ng'.

Nadi is a Fijian word, not Indian. So the pronunciation is with an 'n'' in between. Its written Nadi, pronounced as Nandi. You have to know about the Fijian language to understand why it is pronounced nandi.

Not all Fiji Indians know Fijian language and vice versa and we don’t consider it a “necessity” either! English is the command language in Fiji 🙂
