How India's Economy Is Growing At A Faster Pace Than China

China's economy might get more attention, but India's is outpacing its neighbor in economic growth. In fact, India came in as the world's fastest growing large economy during 2018, according to the IMF. India's prime minister faces criticism for a lack of job creation and the workforce remains largely in the informal sector. This year, India is in the midst of an important election. Beyond recent tensions with Pakistan, the economy is a key campaign issue.
Indian voters are deciding on their next prime minister and one key issue that could sway voters is how much Prime Minister Narendra Modi has done with the country's economy.
India's economy is the fastest growing large economy in the world. The United Nations expects India's current population of 1.3 billion to keep growing and surpass China by 2024.
However, the country is facing a few obstacles.
A few years ago, Prime Minister Modi, promised to add 10 million jobs to help boost the economy.
That hasn't really happened. The unemployment rate now sits at a 45-year high. And GDP per capita, which is a measure of wealth across a country, lags behind rivals like China by a wide margin.
Can India keep growing at such a fast pace? And if it does, at what cost?

@Lockjaw....Looks like you have not read the book 'The Mitrokhin Archive' written by a KGB officer (of the erstwhile Soviet Union) Major Vasiliy Mitrokhin who worked in collecting and archiving intelligence reports from his extensive network of spies in India with full blessings of Indira Gandhi. For example, on one occasion in the 1970s, a Defence Minister offered to give KGB any information they needed about the Ministry of Defence for US$50,000. KGB, apparently, turned down his offer on the grounds that they (KGB agents) have got and can get all the information they need from their 'moles' (Indians working the Defence Ministry) or from any Government department anywhere in India. KGB's network of spies were so vast inside India. This was possible only by regular payments (by KGB) of millions of dollars to Indira Gandhi's office where the money was split between her and her ministers. Indira Gandhi loved the Russian communists. But did not want Indian communists to come to power in India.

USA hated Indira Gandhi for defying them. Enough said.

@Saurav Haldar You don't need to be an economist to see that India's economy was mostly stagnant under Nehruvian socialism. You just need a set of eyes and a brain to look at data. Same thing happened with China. The economy was not growing under Mao's communism, and then Deng Xiaoping introduced capitalist ideas and the economy started exploding. They reformed their economy earlier though. India wasted more time.

And while per captia is not rising (mainly due to the fluctuating currency numbers), India's per captia in PPP terms is rising fast. India needs to do better I guess tho

That's actually not true. The population from 2007 to 2017 increased from 1.17 billion to 1.33 billion. During the same time, the GDP per capita doubled from some $4000 to $8000. In fact, the GDP per capita has been doubling every 10 years since the 1990s. At this rate of 7.5% growth, it will probably hit around $35k to $40k by 2040. If India grows at more than 10% rate, it could be higher than $60k.

You are publicly parading your ignorance here. The population growth rate is small and the GDP growth rate is much higher. So there is a significant growth in per-capita income as well, of course it is starting off from a low base so it isn't very high but it will get there in time.

India and China were roughly in the same boat decades ago. But a divergence occurred, China liberalized their economy. They tore down regulations and opened the country to foreign investment. Their economy boomed. India continued their protectionist heavy government regulations and their economy suffered for it. Now, India’s economy is booming because of the lack of protectionism and the decrease in heavy handed government regulations. This is the same story found in my home country, Bangladesh that is only now becoming a rising economic power because of the liberalization of the economy.

The difference will be India will not be able to sustain growth like China did. China operates at high efficiency and less “yellow tape”. They can easily implement legislation or economic policy. China forced the displacement of millions to build new economic hubs, then pumped billions in infrastructure projects and artificially kept the Yuan low since the early 90s. They forced its people to adapt to reform. India society is based on traditions and less willing participants in major economic reform as China. China doesn’t really give its citizens a choice.
