I started racing late (I was 17). I did the same thing as you, put all of my waking hours into training. While my friends were out partying, I was running 12 miles. I would wake up at 4:00 AM, drive out to the track I practiced at, and had to push my bike about 1/4 mile from my truck to the track, so I wouldn't piss off the neighbors. I waited until the sun came up and as soon as I could see, I was riding. I was getting pretty good and winning a lot of races and nationals. Unfortunately, just before my 21st birthday, I tried out a desert race and wiped out, over the bars @ 95mph. Shattered my hip. While I was in the hospital for my 21st birthday, parents told me my Mx racing days were over. They said I could get a quad. ***DING*** light bulb went off in my head, thinking "Okay, I could start racing ATVs". I asked my gf if she could go and get every ATV magazine there is on the shelf. I read those from cover to cover. When I was rehabilitated, I bought an 88' Suzuki LTR 250R, and before even riding it, I stripped it down to the frame. Rebuilt the quad with every performance part I could afford. Went out and started practicing and training again. I jumped straight to Pro. My first race I got smoked, but learned a lot. Within the next few months, I was winning races all over. After about a year, I was unbeatable at the local race tracks. Other racers would come up to me and say "When I heard you were here, we should just give you our money." One guy said "I heard you were fast, but I had no idea how fast you were until you lapped me through the whoops. HOLY SHIT DUDE!!" Things like that stick in your head forever. At that time, I was also racing the Mickey Thompson Off Road Grand Prix's (Stadium racing). I even won the ATV main event @ Mile High Stadium in Denver Colorado in 89'. I ended up ranking in the top 15 fastest in the world, and would've done better if I didn't break my back falling off a scissor lift at work. That pretty much ended my career. I have no regrets, just wished the arthritis didn't hurt so bad, lol. The moral of the story is, you can accomplish anything you set out to do, if you put your mind to it. Good luck. T. David

Super inspirational! I had the opposite experience with my parents. They wanted me to have nothing g to do with bikes. Saved up for a new 1985 (yea I'm that old!) CR125 and did a couple races with my friends but never had a support system or encouragement. I also had some serious family issues and got displaced from home at 19. I'm getting back into it at 51. Going old bike racing! Good luck with the career!

Yeah man, I'm 35 and started racing off-road in C-class 3 years ago. I've always wanted to be a moto kid but money wasn't there. I've got the money now but I don't have the youthfulness. Oh well, I'll be racing A-class this year locally. A little more mellow than MX but still super fun. Better late than never.

Graduated a semester early from my class. Got 16 years riding. Not racing but 16 years of riding and xp I promise I can keep up or out run on a track. I dont care to race. I love showing off. Got my first ticket at 16 doing wheelies down i40. Grew up riding the sand dunes by my house. So I'd just catch air. My last bike is on its last leg so I'm dropping 10k on a new 2019 ktm 450 sx f. I'm back flipping it in April. I catch hella air and wrecked many times. Broke both wrist, left knee, left ankle and 3 ribs over the years. Idc to brake bones I like showing off. So I'm hoping you'll see me in x games by 2023 or 2024. Trust me when I say this btw. I CAN RIDE

Such a great life you are living, and great perspective. The emotional and physical challenges that you have had have obviously made you a stronger and tougher person and competitor. I have been a motocross fan since I was 12 years old back in 1978. Bob Hannah was my favorite back then. I will be 57 this year, and just got my first dirt bike since I was 15. I have learned so much from your videos, and will continue to. I appreciate the transparency and insight into the thoughts, fears, and mental side as much as the technique. It really helps to know that someone who is at the level that you are has some of the same thoughts and concerns as the rest of us. You are a great ambassador of the sport, and I would argue that you deserve a ride somewhere. Keep plugging away! Looking forward to following you in the outdoor MX season this year (2023)!

Great story, I had a similar early career and got on well into mid 250 expert level in the uk until 2002 when I just failed by one place to get into the 250 championship, I got 11th needed top 10! Later that same year I found out I had an eye disease and that stopped me racing, so my 2 month old crf450 has sat in the shed for 16 years untouched until last week. I had two eye ops during the just few years that's helped my eyesight and I'm going to try riding again, I started my bike last week for the first time in 16 years and I can't tell you how good it felt. Love your vids and it's great to see such talent breaking into the big time, all the best gaz 😎👍

I love that you took the time to explain it all to us! I couldn't believe that the speed you have and you don't sit next to big names but now it all makes sense! I'm so sorry for you did not have the greatest amateur career because of bad injuries. amateur is rough and you get forgotten easily... However, you are still lucky to even had an amateur career because I didn't have the chance... Here in Canada, little boys play hockey so my parents put in me in every hockey they could while I was always dreaming of motocross... They didn't believe it was something that as worth it to try and It was too expensive for 5-6 months of not that great riding conditions... So when I turned 15 I bought my first bike, 2009 CRF250, I didn't a damn thing about maintaining a bike or even riding it... That poor thing got really beat down. I was riding every day I could with the limited money I was making at this time. The first 4 years were soo hard. Then I bought a 2013 CRF250. Now I was able to ride in C class but just like you were... a top 20 was a life goal. I kept digging and trying to get my best C class finish... 12th... that was soo bad... I took 2 years out off competition and rode with retired Canadian pros that helped me with my weaknesses. Last spring I tried for the first time 450... It like unleashed me... I'm not saying that 450 are the way to go, I do believe that 250 are the best to learn and progress but for my size ( 6.2 215lbs in shape, not fat) the 450 was just the perfect fit. I bought myself a 2019 CRF450r and I was soo comfortable on it I couldn't believe it. This summer I'm aiming to a full season in B class and trying to compete for the top 5. Anyways, all this to say I love your content, keep it up, we all believe in you and I do think youtube could bring some great exposure and maybe some opportunities. Keep it up, brother!

Awesome Jeff! I'm 43 and just got my first bike last spring (4/2020) and had to fix it first. Rode off and on around in the field on the weekends watching AJ Catanzaro and practicing some technique. I hit my first track 4th of July Weekend at Twisted MX. With encouragement from a buddy I registered with AMA and D14 and Raced this past weekend at Twisted MX in my first open D class race. I needed seat time and that was the only way I could get it. Needless to say I got lapped my first moto as I bit it a couple of times but got 13th of 17 in my second Moto that day and didn't fall at all. ha ha. I'M HOOKED! Thanks for sharing and I look forward to watching your career! Andrew C. P.S. I got Moto videos up now. My first race is almost done uploading. ;) God Bless brother!

Loved this vid man. I haven’t raced in over 4 years mainly cause I just didn’t think I was gonna go anywhere. I always was a mid pack rider in 250c. And I recently decided I want to get back at it and actually work for it. This vid definitely boosted confidence a tad😂.

Can’t do anything but respect you man... you worked so hard to be where you are now... I’m from the UK and have been riding for a while but have never really had the chance to work hard to get fast... me and my dad don’t really have the money to train in the winter and we have no tracks near us and I’m not on a great bike (2003 Rm 125) and I still battle for top 10s on youth open (125/250 13-18) and there’s some rapid guys... I hold my own but I don’t think it’ll go anywhere... loving the vids man and good luck for the up coming season and much love for your story man (I’m 14 btw lol)😂❤️🙏🏽

This as actually really inspirational! I had a similar thing happen to me except I messed up my hip on a mountain biking track (on a normal bicycle) and since then, I haven’t really gone back into biking, but instead started recently getting back into dirt biking again! Hadn’t rode in probably 5 years and sold my bike. Aside from the few rides I got in the mountains, I was pretty much a beginner again. Last time I actually rode was as a kid, on a Chinese Gio 50cc 4 speed bike.

I think you actually turned pro at 4 with you torn your acl and still keep riding. Much respect. Anybody pushing that hard to reach their goals with all those set backs is pro.

Great video! I'm 14 from Michigan too and since it's too cold to ride, I just did wrestling for a good workout for the next season and I'm hoping to make lorettas in 125C

I started racing when I was 17 and turned pro at 23. A lot of hard work, a lot of wrecks, and being broke. My pro career lasted 3 years, and my body couldn’t handle it. My friends where national pros and trying to keep up is truly the only reason I was able to get as far as I did
