How I use references

Ойын-сауық

Hey!
In this video I am drawing and painting in my sketchbook, I also talk a little about the references I used. I hope this answers some of the questions you might have on how I come up with my ideas and how I use my references.

Norman Rockwell would use photo references and piece together a story. I find references almost a interesting as the final product.

Lately I've been enjoying drawing from black and white reference and adding whatever colors I want. It kinda forces me to think more about hues and values. Instead of using that eye dropper tool and finding the colored pencil that matches that area of pixels.

I am into horror movies and video games. In one of the reference photos I saw the Movie Suspiria and I almost screamed lol. It is one of my favorite 70's films. Dario Argento makes really good films with such beautiful color and lighting. One of his films inspired a company to make the video game series ClockTower. It is such an obscure video game franchise. Capcom, known for the Resident Evil franchise, had acquired the rights to Clocktower. They made a main series game and then made a spin off called Haunting Ground. That game is amazing!

I had no idea that Suspiria was the inspiration for ClockTower, or maybe I missed that. I haven't played the game myself but I watched a couple of videos about the game :)

Oh my god! The image of the with the mask and the phone is from my favorite horror movie: Les yeux sans visage. My French teacher in middle school showed it to us and I’ve been in love with it ever since. I was even the main character, Christiane, for Halloween when I was 13. For all of 8th grade I would draw characters from the movie, it’s really beautiful and sad. I recommend it to everyone!

Loved how you used the reference. I didn’t think the Ohuhu sketchbook would work with watercolor. Interesting 🤔 I must give it a try since I have the same Kuretake watercolor set. Thanks for sharing your process. Love your artwork!
