How I Take Notes & Study (University of Toronto)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Omg I'm actually kind of nervous to upload this video O_O I'm seriously just an average uni freshman so definitely take my words with a grain of salt hahaha. Love you all and I'll be back next week with a regular plan with me using our Autumn emoti mini kit ;)

Q: Do you do these spreads after the week is over?
A: I always film myself creating these spreads before the week has started and continue to fill it out during the week. I collect the footage at the end of the week and do my voiceover which is why everything I say is in past tense! I always prefer to plan ahead~
Q: How do you use so many planners at the same time?
A: Every week, I choose a few planners for me to use so I’m not actually using ALL of my planners every single week! For example, I always choose a planner for me to take on the go, one for academics, one for business, and one that is more decorative and fun. Part of what I do is showcasing spread ideas so that is why I have so different layouts!
Q: How did you learn your lettering?
A: This is a pretty annoying answer but...practice practice practice! I didn’t use a book or a single resource to learn. I honestly just picked up on the different types of lettering through my daily life (things like book covers, posters, etc.) and practiced whenever possible!!!

I didn't realize that people thought it was a waste of time to rewrite your notes, I ALWAYS rewrote my notes, even if it's studies for my personal use, if it's something I want to remember, I make a note of it, and then I'll write it in a more organized manner because most times during lectures it's a quick jot of the "idea" and not the full concept. Plus, it always gave me yet another chance to review whatever I was learning, the more times it was written or reviewed, the more likely it is that when it came to practical application or tests, I knew the content. But I also know a lot of people that NEVER take notes at all, no matter what we are doing.

I would rewrite notes and make quizlets of each unit to help me study. I was the quizlet girl. Because I have ADHD, I'd get too focused on rewriting my notes super pretty that I'd miss information. However the quizlet thing helped me because I could type out my notes and keep them organized without feeling like it had to be perfectly neat.

Honestly, I think pretty much anyone who says to Not rewrite notes are in 'that' group of people who are uber talented at organizing, AND able to write SMALL and neatly and quickly and never accidentally write a wrong letter/word. Everyone hates their own handwriting and thinks someone else has better writing, but "YOU" are the one who has to read those notes, not that other person who thinks your handwriting is lovely.

OK, first, you are anything but average...you are exceptional...and perhaps too modest to realize that just yet. Your note-taking system is very well organized and neat. That means not only does it have value for you, but could also help other students immensely. I made some decent side coin selling copies of my lecture notes when I was in college and Paramedic school. I gave away a first copy as a sample and then offered study notes for a small charge to those who wanted them. Today you could scan or photograph and send them and not even need to make hard copies...extra cash for little extra work, now there’s a good business model, huh? 😁 I hope you have a great semester!

EDIT: I'm tired of seeing emails from replies to this, so let me clarify something: I didn't say that EVERY SINGLE PERSON learns this way. I said there's a LINK and couldn't believe that people with dismiss it altogether. There's a difference between saying "rewriting notes doesn't help me" and the blanket statement that "rewriting notes is a waste of time". I'm perfectly aware that there are different styles of learning, and that those who are kinesthetic or auditory learners won't find much use in rewriting the notes. Again, I didn't say "I can't believe they said it's a waste of time. Studies show that it's the only way to learn" I said "I can't believe they said it's a waste of time. Studies show there is a link." ---- I can't believe that people say that rewriting notes is a waste of time. There have been studies that show that there is a link between repetition and writing in long-hand to memory and learning.

I think it depends on learning styles. As a auditory learner writing them over would be pointless for me. Taking notes in the first place was pointless. I’d record lectures then listen back to them. Then I’d take part in study groups and discuss. For math and science going through the steps in my head helped.

TheCoffeeMonsterzCO that’s a shame. Based on VARK it’s known not everyone learns the same way. If something works for some that’s great. But just like writing things again doesn’t work for me. rewritting notes can be super useful - I used this method all the time in university. But the most important study "hack" is making past exams and tests; if the teacher doesn't provide them, ask older students about the type of questions and exercices you can expect in that discipline. Many times, teachers repeat questions or use the same examples on the exams and can make or break your grade besides, it's a great way to meet new people and make friends! :D

As a teacher I watch this type of videos to be able to recommend my students correct instructional videos how to learn for the lesson. And among the multitude of note taking videos on KZread yours is one of the best. It doesn't have anything to do with being smart when listening to the lecture, it is just the individual way of processing new information and even those students that understand immediately need to write and rewrite the notes if they want to have the information deposited in the long term memory. You are smart! Thank you for the effort of doing this video!

I always watch these types of videos in hopes of changing but I never have. I take the most all over the place, messy notes ever. It’s usually a result of writing fast as I actually have decent handwriting normally but it gets sloppier and more cursive like as I speed up. I am proud to say that I use margins, really helps when I have 2 pages front and back of history notes and I’m looking for a specific year or topic.

I love the highlight first idea and adding the border. I also color-code my highlights when I'm reviewing my notes: pink is people, green is geographic info, blue is time/dates, yellow is for quotes or citations. I also have orange & purple, and I may pull one of those if the instructor says it will be on the test but I don't necessarily find that fact important. I now use the same color-coding system when annotating my books (which I don't do often, but my code is in place when I find it helpful). Thank you for the tips!

Holy crap, you have such a beautifully soft and slightly raspy tone to your voice. It's so soothing and pleasing to the ear. This video was already very nice, but your voice just elevated it wonderfully. I am taking online courses and I have a huge issue with learning during seminar. I almost always go through the book before class so that I can already have a basic understanding of what is going on before my Prof even gets ahold of me.

Re-writing notes is a great way to learn - it helps your brain make more connections and you usually remember the material better. Ditto for writing by hand, as opposed to taking notes on a device. Hand printing and cursive each activate different parts of the brain. Super important skills.

Omg your notes are so perfect it hurts me. God how can anyone write so perfectly!? I've been trying so hard to write that beautifully. Also re-writing notes helps your brain to reprocess the material. I rewrite all the important things in my life in multiple places and it has really helped with my ADHD.

i use those page flags from post-it and tbh i love them so much more than using regular paper sticky notes or page markers. usually at the beginning of the school year, i'll get out one for every textbook i have and use it to mark what page or chapter im on in my textbook so when I have to get out my book i can immediately find the page i need. i can make 1 sticky note flag last for the whole school year because they're such good quality. also, i like them just because i feel fancy and who doesn't love asserting stationary dominance

OH MY GOD ARE YOU KIDDING ME I literally JUST started highlighting then writing on top today!! that's crazy, It's so smart to do that lmao. I use brush pens to "highlight" and the black ink just smears and everything looks ugly. Doing it the other way around just keeps everything clean and neat though its definitely annoying guessing how much you're gonna need but I'll probably know with time just like you. So many helpful tips in this video thanks a lot

Tbh, even though I understand my notes as I write them. Rewriting them has always had two really obvious benefits for me. The first, is that I can actually read them if I rewrite them. The second, is that it's so much easier to retain the information if you purposefully rewrite them. I find that simply rereading my notes leads me to miss things because my brain tells me "oh, you've already read this before" and I unintentionally end up skipping things. That's why I also agree with teaching yourself or a willing subject. Because sometimes they will have questions for you to try and answer and it means you may get to expand your knowledge of the subject at the same time.

During lectures I tried my best to mostly listen instead of taking notes. I realized I always had to end up teaching myself after class anyway so I gave up trying to write down as much as possible. I can't believe I never thought of putting subtopics in a sidebar!!! Thanks for the tip 😁 I also find colored pens too straining for notes so I often use them for underlining instead of highlighting. This is also good if you're stuck with thin paper and don't want bleeding 🤢

TheCoffeeMonsterzCO SOOO I TRIED IT and I’m kinda digging it 😂 For those who are curious, at first I kept messing up because either I had too much of a highlighted strip, or too little. What I did to fix this was I pretended/ghosted whatever I wanted to highlight, just to see where my writing would end of that makes sense. After trial and error, I kinda like this! The only thing is my regular ball point pens don’t work on writing over the highlighter, so I recommend the Ink Joy gel pen or I used the Pen Gems with the Uniball Hybrid ink replacement. I hope this helps anyone who is curious! :)

My classmates think I'm crazy for handwriting a summary and not typing it. What I also find useful is to watch videos about the subject on youtube if you can find some, that way you hear everything again and it is more likely to stick. My history teacher in high school used to make these videos about the subjects we saw in class and I always watched them. Also, please keep making videos like this because they make me excited to study! So thank you for that!

Thank you for these helpful tips for note taking! I am currently a student in year eight. And have been thoroughly enjoying binge-watching ‘study with me’ videos. The majority of these videos made are coming from GCSE and A level students. However, I don’t believe it’s ever too early to begin revising and knuckling down. I’ve also been watching people come out of school with impressive results and I honestly just want that for myself. Which is why I am trying to keep motivated and encouraged at all times to allow me to do that and achieve the results I hope for! I was disappointed you didn’t really mention revision techniques such as creating mindmaps/diagrams. I am aware that everyone has their own ways of revising and understanding their information. But most people I know find that is a good way of representing information and categorising big paragraphs of information in a way in which Is understood better. And flash cards are fantastic for little words which you need to learn but are still important. Please nobody judge the way anyone learns. At the end of the day, if that helps then that’s the best way and you should leave people to it. Don’t ever try and change the way people find easiest. We should wish the best for each other always, and never force anybody to be any different. Sorry to ramble about what I do, but I do love this video and find it useful for someone of my age.
