I’d also be interested in a video from you on how to clean a record and how to maintain your needle ... thx, great content!!
My record collection has grown almost by accident and I’m worried I’m not caring for them properly. I’d love more videos about cleaning and storing records, even an entire playlist.
Thank you for all your videos... best way to pass time during the quarantine. Love those mofi sleeves
Thanks for this video, it helps since I have a collection (unintentionally) and need to know how to care for them, my albums are from the late 60's thru the 80's bought at the time and they are all in really good shape some being 60 years old they deserve respect. 😊 Thanks
For my absolute top tier Rare collectable records, I use MOFI sleeves for the vinyl, then insert in the back like you (no ring press), then I place a Blakes Crystal Sleeve over the whole album, then place it in a resealable crystal sleeve for added protection. Then I store them in my LP Flight Cases. Nice !! I love my record collection !
It seems small, but I started storing mine this way and it's a game changer. For me it's also about accessibility. It's so easy to just pull the inner sleeve out of the back and throw a record on. No struggle or worries of paper or cardboard sleeves.
The Best sleeves ever !!!!!!!!! They keep the records so clean !!!
Like seeing the labels but I miss seeing the back covers of the jacket. Nit picky I know but hey,I'm a pain in the ass that way. Love your vids as always.
Helpful video. My local record store sells 4 mil sleeves which I like quite a bit. Thanks for the great videos.
Dillon great info! How do you store 2 LP albums?
I keep mine precisely the same way. Easy to slide the record out by pinching the bottom corner and tilting to allow the record to slide out. FYI there are really nice inner sleeves from Vinyl Storage Solutions that are completely transparent so if you slide out the record you can see through the outer and inner sleeve and read the back of the jacket. You can buy in bulk from them for some nice prices. Oh Canada!
I used to buy Nagaoka anti-static inner sleeves and the opening of the sleeve was at the top, this went inside the cardboard sleeve with the opening to the side and this was all within a heavy duty outer sleeve with the opening at the top (this provided a "maze" effect to keep the dust out. I used to work in a record shop and had many people tell us not to stand the records on their edge as the grooves would sag (LOL). Then we had to explain that storing them flat was not a good idea as the weight of the records would probably cause the discs to sag.
ive started doing this with my records. i prefer to keep them this way. it definitely makes it easier to take the record in and out
As always a wonderful video
I just bought some inner and outer sleeves for my records Glad I did, looks alot better
I was wondering about the sleeves you use. Thanks for cluing us in!
I used to store my records behind the jacket too, but then I noticed that I was just denting the record behind it on my shelf in the shape of the record (my records are about as loose as yours) along the tops of the jackets. Now I keep all LPs in a single sleeve in the jacket or if they're gatefold, just drop them between the gatefold.
Informative as usual thank you
Love that george Harrison album in the bottom left!
Very cool! That’s exactly how I store my records as well!
Thanks so much for the video. Can you demo how you clean your vinyl? I’ve seen so many different ways and want to make sure that I am cleaning them properly.
I love the MO FI sleeves , took a while to get my whole collection done, but now I just have to sleeve the nea ones I get. I like the 3mil outter sleeves too, I hate the sticky flip ones

I use the protective sleeves as you do. I want to hear about how people prefer to remove and replace the disc in the inner sleeve - protective or paper. I grab the edge dead wax between thumb and forefinger and lift it out vertically until I can lay it on my other hand, touching only the edge and spindle hole. To replace, I again flip it up so I can grab it by the outer dead wax and slowly slip it down into the sleeve. My belief is that removing it horizontally, as most do, leads to more scraping on the inside of the sleeve than if you carefully lift it our vertically - escpecially if you press very slightly on the edge of the outer cover to bow it open just a bit. I think my method will minimize - not eliminate - the many tiny spider web scratches that accumulate even on well cared for records.
I aim to use either 2 or 3 mil outer sleeves, it depends on how large the jacket is because sometimes they can be a bit oversized, especially if it’s a Stoughton tip on style jacket. For inners, I always use MoFi or MoFi-esque sleeves. Many companies do their own brand of them using the same material and at during any given time of the day, they can be slightly cheaper but they work extremely well. Disckeeper also does some anti static sleeves for about $15 for a pack of 50 and I’ve used those for many years and they work very well. Thanks for sharing, cheers!
Same way I store mine dude. Nice video. Had me chuckling.

Hahah gotta keep it light
MoFi inners are the best.. for outer sleeves, crystal clear blake sleeves are stellar and boost up any sleeve at least one grading point (the open ones not the annoying sealable ones). there's also a 33cm version for gatefolds
Just bought my first pack of MoFi sleeves since the shop where i was buying the similar and less expensive Vinyl Styl sleeve closed in March after over 40 years in business.. So far i'd say i still prefer the Vinyl Styl as they seem easier to pop open and slip the record into, sometimes that's a struggle with the MoFi's, haven't measured yet but the Vinyl Styl may be slightly heavier plastic. Otherwise very very similar to me at this point.
Great and informative VID Dillon. Another tip is remove posters, pictures, booklets, stickers, lyric sheets...etc. Put these in a separate outer sleeve or a discarded album box or similar. These extras add to ring wear and warping. Are there any outer sleeves made for box sets??? I would imagine these would be expensive.
Hi Dillon when I started watching your video's I noticed how you stored your lps and I thought that was really good idea ,so that's how mine are now .
I store my vinyl the exact same way..I have stored them that since I began my collection.
Pretty much what I use, MoFi inners and various 3mm outers from a few like Bags, and another from Amazon (100 pk) I really like & trust. Ironically, I don't Ike MoFi's outers. I used 8 color 1/4" electrical tape and stripe the spine on the outer representing the biggest, for me, labels and pressors like Analogue Productions, MoFi, Pure Pleasure, Blue Note, etc. Gives me a quick view of my roughly 1,500 LPs, more important (again, to me) LPs. I'll insert vinyl in its original sleeve unless it's an older, "uncomfortable" fit. Good vid.
Thanks again yer videos always great 👍
That's nice that you put sleeves on all your records at your new record store. Some record stores here do but Bananas records in St Pete does not. That surprises me because they've got better caliber records then some of the others. I think that's why I first started watching you was when you went to bananas and did the video. I live about 4 miles from the store or should I say three locations.
Super helpful!
Records like your 13th Floor, with that beautiful cover, I put the disc in a MOFI and then in a white cardboard cover, I put the cover, inserts and original liner in a snug poly outer, and both pieces in a larger poly outer, the cost is under $2, and it will better protect and preserve your $300 record!
I just store my records on the floor, but in no inner. I find walking on them helps to kill any static, especially in dry weather. lol I store my records the exact same way for the same reasons, but put my extra nice n’ special ones in a 5 mil Sleeve City outer. For a gatefold, I dig putting em in MoFi inners with the backs of the MoFi’s facing one another in between the gatefold. Keeps the spine spread out the right distance, so it doesn’t get crushed at all. Thanks, Dillon. That’s actually a great topic. As you said, I’m sure a lot of people are curious as to the best way to store their records. Man, do I love your channel! It’s nice to see someone else as obsessed and neurotic about vinyl as I am. Wish I’d known about it earlier.

Sam Tessler Yeah, absolutely man. I started using those a few years back instead of MoFi’s, just cuz they’re a better version of the MoFi inners, but when you say, “MoFi sleeves”, people generally know what you’re talking about. I didn’t wanna take up any more space with my comment explaining how the Disckeeper inners were a souped up version of the MoFi’s. lol

Sam Tessler I was also just gonna put in a big order with Sleeve City, then got that email that they’re not shipping for a while. Not sure if you got the same one.
Really liked this video, when I bought LPs in the mail, they would come packaged that way, and I just thought that was how you were supposed to ship them. But this was great and useful information. I will start doing this. This is really helpful for covers with OBI's, because I don't have to take the cover out to play the record. But what about double or even triple LPs? Put both or all 3 on the outside? For example, Sandinista! Would you put all 3 of the LPs outside the cover? I suppose it wouldn't matter that much because single-pocket covers with multiple LPs stick them all inside the cover, so having them all together outside probably won't make a difference. But I thought I would ask you.
I h8 the sticky top! Haha I kind of want to transition to those mofi sleeves. It looks gr8 if you have colored wax. Found your channel in middle of the night & I’ve been record collecting heavy. Awesome channel man! Cheers & keep it up! 💯

Hi Dylan..love your channel. Very informative. Just wondering what you use and how you clean your vinyl? Thanks a mill...
Im gonna do as you, smart way to do it
All good stuff Dillon. One thing I should mention that you will thank me for down the line when it comes especially for special packaging or for many of the 12" singles are the flexible PVC pouches. They are notorious for ruining records stored in them, and the records next to them on either side. It's been discovered that to get them flexible, they used a lot of plasticizer in making them and they are discovered to leach, badly and thus onto the LP itself stored inside and to adjacent ones. Early signs are an iridescent oil like swirls will first appear on the record surface. Let it go long enough it will affect playback by making the record sound very noisy, swooshing where it exists and thus ruining them. Two examples that I have are both from Prince, sadly neither are 45rpm 12" singles but were packaged in these pouches with stickers, one single has Alphabet St on one side and both have the visual iridescent appearance to it, but they sound fine, thankfully. I just bought 3 budget PE outer sleeves and tucked them in that to prevent further damage, just FYI. Now Clear Spot by Capt Beefheart, I have the current reissue and it's in the clear pouch as was the originals and worry if they also have this plastizer in it as well. Will need to remember to research that as it's a great album and would hate to have it ruined by its own packaging. Otherwise, I use MoFi inner rice paper sleeves, but there are others, such disc keeper and it's either Sleeve City or Bags Unlimited that sell a version of them as well, but priced the same as MoFi. I'm looking to maybe try some of Blake's Sleeves as they have no welts on the side so don't split and I dislike the crackly 2 Mil or 3 Mil sleeves, but like the 5Mil versions in the clear PE. I have some older cloudy PP outers that I bought I think 25-30 years ago that have held up but don't look as nice. Also, the real thin bags do split pretty readily in some cases. Anyway, a great video and I may rethink putting the LP in the back, slit side not facing up to reduce dust on the record itself and thus maybe reduce the need to brush the LP before playing to remove any dust.

I like the fact that you speak some truth about 2mil double pockets. I got 4mils for that matter.
Great advice, thanks. Can you tell me the best way to ship/mail a record? It just seems risky to mail one, bu there must be a secure way of doing it. Thanks
Always informative. But I have a question that I can't seem to get a straight answer on. Should I be using polypropylene outer sleeves, or polyethylene. I have searched all over. Found one article saying use polypro as it is archival safe and near ph neutral. Whereas in another article they said polyethyl is inert and mold, mildew and discoloration will not occur along with being lower in static. What gives? One thing tho, both articles were more for photos and comics archiving.
I put the record inside its cover unless I am shipping it, in which case I put it outside the cover and protective sleeve entirely. I think the concerns about edge damage if you put it in the cover are unneccesary because the edge wear comes mostly from jostling vibrations during shipping; there is nothing that should cause the disc to rub against the inside of the cover while it is on the shelf or simply being removed for playing and then replaced - note that if you do store it outside the cover and inside the protective outer sleeve, you do not find a problem with split seems on the outer sleeve (unless it is those sticky sleeves, in which case the splitting occurs when you try to open the sleeve itself - those will split if you just look at them).
What about double lp’s do you still put those in the back in separate sleeves? Or is it too much for the outer sleeve? Currently going through my collection and doing this I really like it
Do you have a video going over boxes to store them? I have some records that come in special edition boxes or what not and they’re slightly bigger than the standard jacket size, thanks
I like the mofi sleeves
I know this is a 6 month old upload, but how do you store double LPs? In two separate Miri sleeves together behind the jacket?
You should try the 5 mil Sleeve City outer sleeves. Best sleeves I've every tried. They are super thick and ultra clear.
@GeeklecticSPW

Same. I use them and they are outstanding.
Quick question, have you found larger outer sleeves for boxier or collectors editions so that the mofi sleeves are not too jammed in the back with those larger boxes?
have you tried the vinyl storage solutions dual pocket outer sleeves?
I use mofi maybe I’ll start doing it also . I’ve seen other people doing it also. Ooo I hate the sticky strip. 👌
I store my records the same way. Question... for a double album gatefold.... do you put one record in the middle of the two gatefolds and one record in the back of the sleeve? Or do you put both records in the back? I do one in the middle, one in the back... but I’m not sure if one way is better than the other.
I don’t know if you’ve already said anything about this, but it would be cool to hear your story. How you got into music, how and when you first started collecting. How did you decide to start up your shop? Ik it might be weird talking about yourself but it would be inspiring to hear!

I know Chris HATES the shrink but I personally love finding an old record preserved and holding value in its shrink especially with hype stickers. What is your take on shrink and hype stickers? Sorry if you've already answered this.

I do the same, except I stopped using MFSL sleeves ever since I tried plastic lined paper sleeves. They are easily separated when out and inserting the record meaning no friction and even less static and micro scratching occurring. They also happen to be cheaper for me so its a no brainer.

Work hard, you can do it!
The three best inner sleeves on the market are first, the MA Recordings inner sleeves, which are expensive, Sleeve City's Ultimate Inner Sleeves, and the Vinyl Storage Solutions Clear Inner Sleeves. The best outer sleeves are the Vinyl Storage Solutions 4 mil sleeves with either dual or single pockets, with either the resealable or tuckable flaps. For my best records I buy the dual pocket resealables and use a plain white jacket. I place the original album cover in the resealable, put the record in the plain white jacket and tuck the jacket in the pocket behind the record. You can just put the record behind the jacket in the second pocket without a jacket if you prefer.

There is only one kind of resealable outer sleeves that is any good...but they’re fantastic. It is a specific Japanese Mylar 50 micron outer sleeve and it never gets hazy, the glue lasts forever and the seams never spilt. They are really expensive and getting tougher to find, but those are my preferred outer sleeves. All other cheaper resealable ones eventually break down in some way and they suuuck.
what about for double or triple lp vinyls? do you do the same thing or leave only 1 outside the album jacket and the rest inside? thanks
what is ring wear? (Im guessing its when the record's shape is worn into the album cover (like at 2:39)) also what about the multi-vinal albums? do you keep the records on the outside or just put them back in the album?
Can you make a video on how you clean your records?
Is there any risk with the records not completely vertical in your half filled cubes behind you? Seems like there is a bit of "pressure" on them.
I think you're supposed to seal those "double" sleeves, with the "back pouch" for the vinyl, from the BOTTOM, not the top! Then you can slide in your Mofi'd wax with the arrows facing to the left. Trust me it works better than having to rip that adhesive open again and again, with it picking up all manner of unsightly dust, dirt and whathaveyou...but thanks, I feel justified now in using your method, I use the adhesive sleeves for my "grailz, dude"!!! Seriously, though, I use them for anything I paid over £100 for. Stil, informative video as usual cheers from the UK!

Yes. They each get their own inner and i just let them both sit behind the jacket. Been doing it that way for 3 years and have had no problems.
what about if it’s a 2lp? do you put each disc in its own sleeve and place both in the back next to each other or one in the front one in the back?
What do you do if the album has 2 or 3 records?
when you put the record in the back of the sleeve do they ever get warped or cracked. seems that they would be too exposed?
I've never had any issues with the resealable sleeves. I use clearbags.com. There are probably some other brands that aren't as good. My process is resealable-->mo-fi sleeve. I'm loyal to those 2 brands. Nothing less than the best. I also do a little sticker label thing on the back of my outer sleeves to write annotations/pressing info and whatnot.
