In this How I shot it tutorial video I talk you through exactly how I created a simple off camera flash portrait by balancing the natural ambient light with my off camera flash.
A good off camera flash portrait is all about first exposing for the highlights, the brightest part of the scene, then placing the bride/subject in one of the resulting dark areas of the composition, then lighting them with an off camera flash - which is exactly what I do in this video.
To light Liv, my model in this video, I used the MagMod MagBox with a Godox V860 ii speedlight. I used the focus diffuser on the MagBox as well as a 8x ND filter. All shots were taken on my Sony A9 with Sony 85mm 1.8 and Canon 50mm 1.2 lenses. When using the Canon lens I use the Sigma MC11 adapter.
A huge thank you to Liv for modelling, who was fantastic to work with!

Fantastic video. Neill I don’t have an ND filter. Is there an alternative should I encounter the same issue with 128th being too strong? Many thanks.

Great video as always Neil. I'm sure you have mentioned this previously but is there a reason you rather not use high-speed sync? And if you did not have the ND for the flash would you have just moved the flashback a bit? ( I know this would also probably increase light slip a bit. ). Your content is always so valuable, thanks. Thank you very much - and great question! There is no real reason for not using HSS, it's just that I don't tend to do so if I don't need to, but you are right, I could have done. I wouldn't have wanted to move the flash back though because that would do two things which I wouldn't like - it would increase the spread of the light (which could have made the photograph look a bit messy) but it would also have reduced the softness of the light too - the closer the light the softer the light. It would however have solved the brightness problem. I hope this helps? Great questions!! Thank you again
If you are up to it, changing the flash in to TTL and reducing the flash exposure compensation will reduce the flash power below 1/128.

Great video. For me most flash tutorials have way to white of a light. Don't know how much of the photos out come was done in post but, I like the more natural skin tones you end up with. PS, your model has beautiful eyes. What light stand are you using please?

Why not use light meter and start adjusting from there

I don't use light meters - in reality I find that they take much longer than just taking a couple of quick test shots
