In this video I talk through a really simple and easy to set up creative wedding photograph using one speedlight, a MagMod grid, a red gel and a fractal filter.
Fractal filters: www.getfractals.com/
The great thing about this photograph is that it can be taken in almost any wedding venue, all you need is a dark space and a clean background - showing that even if we don't have a photogenic venue, we can still create really cool and unique wedding photography portraits for our bride and grooms.
A huge thank you to Demi and James for being such awesome models and also to my friend and amazing wedding videographer Jonathan Anelli for filming this video for me. Check out Jon's work here: redseats.co.uk/

Thanks, Neil, for another great video! I might add though that on a real wedding, I have mostly found the couple not to have a lot of patience, so once you do this on a real wedding I think one should have been training a lot to make it as quick as possible. I would die of stress if I would try this on a next wedding without practice. Thanks for the creative ideas though!! Your videos are very well made and you are a good teacher.

Thank you very much Manuel :-) Yes, you are right, it isn't easy to do this at a wedding but it's definitely possible with practice as the more you practice shots like this, assuming you set up before calling over the bride and groom, can be done in literally seconds. It's all about practicing the technique first though to give you confidence. Thank you so much again :)
That is genius. Many thanks Neil.

@@NeilRedfern Welcome...
hi, can i asking where can i buy that fractal piece? thank you very much. ur content is superb.. always like to watch ur new video update.
Neil... great video. I recently came across your channel and have found your advice really useful. The one thing I’ve always struggled with is creative off camera flash, but broken down simply as you do it all seems to click. The one challenge i sometimes find is nailing the focus when staging the shot in dark conditions... any tip on this would be hugely useful. Thanks for sharing... 👍🏻
@NeilRedfern

Thank you very much Ross, I really appreciate that. Yes, you're not on your own, lots of photographers see flash as being scary and difficult but when you bring it all back to basics it can become much easier and hopefully I can show that in my videos. You're totally right about the focus too, a good tip is to give the person you're shooting a phone with the torch turned on, ask them to light themselves so you can get focus, then ask them to hide it away. Or do as I did here and use a Sony - which absolutely nails the focus every time and much more reliable than my Nikon

Neil, thanks so much. I think the problem I find is trying to do too much or multiple shots and then putting time pressure on things. Keeping it simple and planning one or two really good shots is definitely the way forward I think. As for Sony, I’ve been toying with the idea of switching for a while, but have so much £ tied up in all my Canon gear... maybe it’s inevitable though!
@NeilRedfern
5 жыл бұрын
I totally agree Ross. I will only try one "creative" shot like this per wedding usually and the couple know that I'm basically playing around. I only take these images once I know I have enough "safe" shots. And yes, that is exactly how I was with Sony for a long time, but then I tried one and it was game over.....! Haha
Great video! This kind of tips made me subscribe to your channel and I'm glad that I did. Keep doing this! From where did you bought that fractal glass?
@NeilRedfern

Thank you so much Teodor! Very kind of you. I bought the fractal from www.getfractals.com/
Nice one! Just one question: When you were setting the diameter of the red spot, would using the speedlight’s zoom have worked as well as moving the light stand fore & aft?
@NeilRedfern
5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Peter! Good question but no, the zoom has virtually no effect when you are using a grid as the grid narrows the light much more than the zoom could
Neil awesome wish I could show you image I did from your inspiration. Can I have a link to get the fractal you have?

From where I get this in india ? Any suggestion ???
Neil, do you have a default setting you zoom the flash head to when also attaching a grid? Thanks
@NeilRedfern
5 жыл бұрын
No default but it's probably on 85mm most of the time. You may as well zoom the flash in when using the grid because when you use a grid the zoom makes no difference to the final result
