How I Scale 3D Printed Armor (and Helmets!) for Cosplay

Фильм және анимация

hope you enjoyed this quick tutorial, I realize it's a bit short and I can go into further detail with larger pieces of armor in the future if you'd like, this was just my current experience with resizing armor for my Tech cosplay from The Clone Wars!

    I love this video! It works great for simpler pieces, but do you have a way you can scale/modify more complicated pieces. Like chest peices for women? (I'm working on a mando and having a ton of trouble with getting an STL for the chest peices.)

  • @vaultfox

    @vaultfox

    3 жыл бұрын

    I’m actually hoping to do an updated video to this in the near future (I’m scaling a winter soldier arm for someone) so hopefully soon! For chest pieces I normally will measure the widest part of my chest as well as the length I want the breastplate to cover … I’ll then slice the widest bit of the chest piece file and print out about 1/4 inch of it to make sure the width is there, and as for height I usually will fiddle with the settings till it’s hitting where I like. For me, width is the hardest thing to fit

    Yeah, from my experience if you’re unsure if you can sell a file/make profit off one my first suggestion would be to reach out to the modeler and ask permission. The majority of the ones I work with gave me permission and also didn’t require any kick-back (even though I offered to).

    I have a question. I am going to print Kenobi clone wars armor for my son. I'm using PLA. Is there a way to strengthen the print? Like bondo? I know PLA kind flexes. But the print isn't wide enough for infills.

  • @vaultfox

    @vaultfox

    2 жыл бұрын

    You could apply fiberglass to the backside of the piece potentially to strengthen it. I haven't personally tried it, but have seen a few videos on it ... it is pretty toxic to work with but if you have the appropriate PPE you should be good. Bondo doesn't really strengthen it, in my experience. In fact I've noticed over time that bondo has a tendency to crack ... but these were very high contact pieces of armor that did it.

    I'm doing a 501st build and hit a major roadblock. Everything but the abs on my armour fits my body perfectly at 100% scale. The abs are too small and by quite a margin, if I scale them to fit me they'll end up being bigger than the chest plate which it's supposed to sit under. In order for 501st approval it needs to be sealed. I could scale all the other parts up to match but then it'll be far too big for me. Any ideas?
