I guess the combination of a sm57 and the royer r-121 would sound similar: the royer sounds somewhat thinner but gets the bottom from the sm57 (80 hertz), while the Unidyne shuts down around 100hertz and gets bottom from the mesanovic..afterall it's taste anyways

Thanks for sharing the info, Josh. If I may, two quick questions: did I understand correctly at 3.23 that you’re recording your guitar at 192, or is that just the name of the hardware and you’re at 44.1/48? Separately, if you had to use software rather than outboard, what type of virtual console / pre strip would you go for? Thank you for the content and well done on a great KZread channel. Hopefully it goes without saying that it’s always great to hear you play, and I reckon you’re a prime example of tone being in the fingers as well as the whole rig!

192's are the name of the interface(an old Avid/Digi one). I never record at 192, usually 96k or 48k. Virtual channel strip for me would be the UA Neve 1073, it's killer. Thanks!!

You got close to explaining phase but then jumped to polarity, which is kind of a different thing, or a singular degree of phase shift. The two terms get intermixed and it leads to confusion. You started out explaining that the sound wave should be at the same point in time. Maybe zooming way in on a PT waveform would help to illustrate this. You can then move the mics so that the waveforms are synchronized together in time. Or as engineers often do with all the mics around a drum kit, bump the waveforms forward or backwards in time (or use a delay) so that the waveforms line up "in phase", typically with respect to the snare. When two signals are out of phase by 180 degrees they theoretically cancel completely. One is said to have an inverted polarity with respect to the other. This is the switch on your desk. In inverts polarity. I'm sure you've encountered pedals or things like Fender reverb amps where the polarity of one channel is the opposite of the other. I used to have a small live sound company and this semantic distinction was very important to the varsity live sound engineers. Polarity inversion switches can help with signals that are run through extra gain stages (typically any singled ended gain stage inverts polarity) and get them going the same direction. Unfortunately they can't help with multiple signals that are at some relations other than 0 or 180 degrees. As mentioned, recording engineers can bump the waveforms forward or back in time but live sound engineers can't. And on a stage you always have multiple mics picking up the same source, each with a different distance and corresponding delay, that all get mixed together. What being at some point between 0 and 180 out of phase will do is create comb filtering. Where narrow bands of frequency will line up reversed in polarity with respect to each other and cancel those frequencies strongly while having less effect on others. Part of the reason that this isn't as simple as things being in polarity or out of polarity, and the reason you could still hear sound when you inverted the polarity of one mic, is that nothing is uniform in phase over frequency. Particularly any transducer like a speaker or microphone. And tone circuits create all kind of frequency dependent phase shift. Most gain circuits have some degree of frequency dependent phase shift. So once you start mixing microphones, and plugging them into different signal chains (as many folks are want to do) the combinations are going to have all kinds of frequency dependent cancellations and summation reinforcements. To say nothing of different amps or speakers (having two different speakers in a cabinet and mic'ing them separately is a popular technique). So you start with zooming in on the lower frequency waveforms that you can see and shift microphones or bump the tracks so that they are as aligned as possible. Then experiment a bit with slight shifts to see if the resultant comb filtering is better or worse. Sometimes you can hit a magic spot. I know this is a lot of words, but it's important. The terms phase and polarity get misused almost as often as lectern and podium. Dealing with either requires different techniques.
