How I Programmed The Synth Opening On Michael Jackson's Thriller: The Synclavier Pt.3

Музыка

This video is part 3 (The Synclavier) of my step by step breakdown of the synth opening I programmed for Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones on the song Thriller.
In this series Anthony breaks down some of the most icons synthesizer patches that he programmed for Michael Jackson’s Thriller
Anthony's musical touch as both composer and performer is connected with some of the most influential creative minds over the last 40 years. He’s composed and conducted original orchestral scores for over 80 feature films including Young Guns, Internal Affairs, The Man From Elysian Fields, 15 Minutes and Planes, Trains & Automobiles, been commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic for his symphonic work "In the Family Way", written over one thousand TV commercials in a myriad of musical styles, co-founded Levels Audio Post (LA's premiere post production facility) and performed and arranged on big-box-office films and influential hit records such as Michael Jackson's Thriller.
His extensive work as a young arranger, orchestrator and performer for Quincy Jones, Jack Nitzsche, Lamont Dozier, Arthur Rubenstein and Giorgio Moroder was vital in launching his own career. His early years pioneering modular analog synthesizers along with his wide-ranging music scholarship positioned Anthony at the center of the music technology revolution. He attended the University of Southern California School of Music as a piano and composition major.

    You should get Arturia to sponsor these videos! Then people who have the Arturia Collection could following along virtually at home. Like I can (and at some point will) fire up each of these vintage synths in my DAW virtually and recreate the opening from Thriller just following this video. So if you did literally that as a video, then a link in the video description is basically straight to Arturia to buy their Collection, so someone could relive history themselves in their own home. In any case, legendary! Thanks for all the videos!

    Hi, Anthony! Storytime: When I was staring out in the late 70s as a young intern at an electronics company, a road sales guy heard that I was interested in pop music. He said one day, "Hey, wanna come for a ride along, to see how I do my job in the field?" Next thing I know, we're riding to Vermont. And after a while, he silently pulls in to a parking lot and says: "Surprise..." The sign on the building said: "New England Digital." I was in shock. And I was treated to a private factory tour, an hour-long demo, and private lesson with the co-inventor of the Synclavier. I'll never forget it. Your videos and common sense explanations are a delight, and this one in particular brought back so many memories. Thank you for your efforts, time, and talent, Anthony. Good on you.

    It's funny watching this video then going back to the original mix and going "Yupp, it's there". But you don't take notice as a listener. You just feel it. That general sensation of a huge "brass stab". So powerful intro! I don't remember who said it but it really stod the test of time! Thanks for letting us into the creative process many years later (it's never to late)! But as we all know the 80's are somewhat alive now again in a modern touch. Thanks!

And I thought that it was just one synth and a bunch of brass!! Thank you for this absolutely masterpiece of a video (and the song itself)!

    This video hasn't aired yet so I don't have the scope of discussion, but I always heard that the Synclavier intro to "Beat It" was a sample from the Synclavier Demo vinyl called "The Incredible Sounds of Synclavier II" and just tacked on to Beat It for an intro. Or if it wasn't simply a sample, it was a direct replaying of that passage form the album. I'll be excited to get Anthony's "truth on the matter".

  • @TheRealDarion

    @TheRealDarion

    Жыл бұрын

    The version used at the beginning of Beat It is actually transposed down a semitone and is a bit cleaner so they definitely reprogrammed the sound on the Synclavier. Bruce Swedien also added some percussive hits at the beginning to give it more oomph. The guy who originally made that little piece for the Synclavier demo could've sued but didn't and actually helped work on Michael's Bad album.

  • @mudi2000a

    @mudi2000a

    @@TheRealDarionI would have thought it was just a factory preset. The Arturia synclavier V has the preset on which the Beat it intro sound is based upon and indeed it sounds a bit different.

  • @TheRealDarion

    @TheRealDarion

    Жыл бұрын

    @@mudi2000a Yes! I shouldn't have said that they reprogrammed the sound but that they replayed it. There was a preset on the original, and I had meant that they started with that preset and made little changes with either EQ or the actual settings on the Synclavier. I love Arturia's version because I can't afford an actual one and that thing is really true to the original (probably better).

    Would love to see the breakdown of the formant-y bass sound from the second half of Thriller when they're doing the dance scene in the video. I've deconstructed the song and that's the only sound I am not sure about. It sounds like it might be amplitude modulated or something, but it's so unique. **brap brap** **funk rhythm guitar** **brap brap** so good!

One thing I wasn’t sure of.. does it change the wave pattern at all when you’re in 438hz as opposed to 440? I’m guessing the slight detuning is what makes it growl more giving it a slight dissonance?

    As all of the three parts (and all of your videos) really *great*. I'm really thankful that you share so many "secrets" of the most iconic Songs of my childhood, it's fantastic. Only thing that makes me wonder is, while I see that this is mainly about the sounds as such, I'm wondering if the chords you're playing are really the ones heard in the original Thriller Intro, as I think there *definitely* was a B heard as well, and I think it's in the synths as well, while you're just playing a straight C# major chord... just curious. :)

Also, the original Emulator pipe organ sample is part of the pipe organ sound in that same part of the track, am I right?
