    Hey Matou! I don't think all hope is lost. I'll be a uploading a video on how to succeed in your summer internship and I'll cover this very topic. During your internship, perform well and strive to meet/exceed expectations that your firm knows you are capable but just had 1 bad semester. Then, next semester, make it a priority to really improve your GPA.

  • @streetShredding

    Hi Sharon, thank you so much for this video. I have found it to be immensely helpful as my journey is similar to yours and I can tell you it is very reassuring to listen from your experience. Just like you were at the time I am a recent graduate with no job, but to study full time. Likewise my goal is to hopefully finish all parts within 4 months (around early September for the last part). I can also relate to the enthusiasm you had about studying for the exam. Strangely enough I started to study with so much enthusiasm and energy. Now, about 4 weeks into my studying I am finishing my review for FAR and wanted to ask you, since I noticed (in one of your comments) that you took REG a couple of weeks after FAR, how did you go about studying for two parts at a time? Did you review for FAR and study the modules for REG at the same time (balancing the two) or was there a cutoff where you stopped reviewing for FAR and just focused solely on studying for REG? Any feed back would be helpful. Thank you again and I hope you're having a great summer!

  • @SharonOnuma

    @SharonOnuma

    7 жыл бұрын

    Very great question! Actually I started and finished studying for REG first. I finished studying for REG during a "Blackout month" (i.e. it wasn't a testing month) so I couldn't sit for REG. So, yes there was a cut off period where I stopped studying for REG and started studying for FAR. When I finished FAR, the testing window opened. Since I'd just ended my review for FAR and the material was still fresh in my mind, it made the most sense for me to just go ahead and sit for FAR first. Then once I took FAR, I picked up my notes for REG, did a quick review and took the exam. That's why my FAR and REG test dates are relatively close! Hope this helps!! Good luck studying!! You sound like you are on the right path!

I do have a question, if the offer from the company came with the CPA exam package, did you ask to take 4 months off to study for the exam? I really want to excel in my CPA exam before i commit to working full time. Also, if there are any extra study tips on how to succeed as an accounting student, i would love to know! Thank you again for being a part of those who inspire girls like myself to reach for the stars, YOU ARE AMAZING!💞

    Hi Maame!! For accounting students, I recommend reviewing the chapter ahead of class so you already know where you have questions and can ask questions during class. I also took advantage of the office hours and free tutoring available at OMSE. I also had a study partner and we would meet the weekend before an exam to practice questions together and quiz eac other. I’m usually at UMD maybe once or so a quarter! Happy to connect in person and thanks for the kind words! Find me on LinkedIn and I’ll be sure to reach out whenever I’m on campus!

I was really looking forward to being done with the CPA exam that when I was finally done, it didn't require much adjusting at all. 2 weeks after my last exam, I started a full time job. So, in that 2 weeks I wanted to do everything I didn't get to do while studying... watch TV, go shopping, hang out with friends/family, go to brunch, etc.

    Hey Marie! Congratulations on your full-time corporate job! That's a great accomplishment! Yes studying in the evenings after work and on weekends is a very good plan! I know people who studied while working and passed the exam. On weekends, I'll suggest you go to your local library so you can focus without distraction. On weekdays in the evening, I'll suggest you stay in the office, order dinner (or bring your own dinner with you) then spend the evening in the office studying in a quiet conference room or office space. Good luck studying!

    congrats on ur great achievement. I just wanted to know, what did u use to do when u got 30 or 40 percent on the assignments? Do u restudy the materials again or just go and study the correct answers? One last thing, do you know how good are Wiley materials as there program fits my style of studying but still not sure of the quality of the contents?

  • @SharonOnuma

    @SharonOnuma

    7 жыл бұрын

    Great question and thanks for watching! When I got 30 or 40% on my homework assignments, I went back and reviewed my notes to make sure I was understanding the concepts correctly or quickly reviewed the text (if I didn't have that particular concept in my notes). Then, I reviewed the practice problem again. In Becker when you get a problem wrong, they explain why the wrong answers are wrong and why the right answer is right. I reviewed the questions I got wrong by reading through all the explanations Becker provided. After going through this process, I'll re-attempt answering all the questions I got wrong. I used only Becker to study so I am not really sure of the Wiley review course. What I do know of Wiley is that I think they are the same Company that publish the intermediate accounting books I used in college... and those books were very thorough in explaining accounting concepts. So my guess is if they are using a similar strategy, their review course would be good. The key is to make you are studying ALL the material (videos, practice questions, textbook, etc.) provided by Wiley.

    Hey Geeta!! Thanks for stopping by! I studied each section for about 4 - 5 weeks except BEC. BEC I studied for 3 weeks. I had to go back to my Notice to Schedule in my emails to dig up my exam dates to remember the time I spent studying. My exam dates were as follows: FAR - 07/11/13 REG - 07/31/13 AUD - 08/29/13 BEC - 10/01/13 I studied each section for about 4 - 5 weeks except BEC. BEC I studied for 3 weeks. I deferred my job offer after graduation to October so I could study. I wasn’t working during the period I was studying. I treated my studying like more than a full time job. I studied everyday, Monday - Sunday for about 8 - 10 hours. Studying that long and continuously wasn’t easy at all but I kept reminding myself that this too would pass. I just had to give it my all in this dedicated 4 months and I’d be done. It was after I’d passed my first 3 sections that I knew I could relax a little bit and I took a week off from studying in September. And that’s why I studied BEC for 3 weeks but still similar schedule though… Monday - Sunday for 8 - 10 hours. Don’t be discouraged. Hang in there; I believe you can pass the CPA too! ☺ What review program are you using?

    I used only Becker to study but I've also heard great things about Roger CPA too. A lot of the CPA review courses are good enough on their own and you don't need to supplement with a different one. The key is to make you are studying ALL the material (videos, practice questions, textbook, etc.) provided by whatever review course you have chosen.

    Hey Shanique! No I didn't go to grad school. I recommend taking the CPA exam as soon as one is eligible to take it. So, if one is in grad school and already has their Bachelors and the number of credits needed for the CPA, then I recommend they start taking the exam. I've met a number of people who have done it this way too. It helped them get through some parts of the exam before they graduate from Grad school.

    Sharon Onuma about 900k take cpa exam each year. Roughly 400-450 K pass it. Actually getting a job with good wage is extremely hard and many those with years of experience end up taking big pay cut to get a job. The big 4 are looking for young cpa being they work them 16-18 hours a day. Older people will not be willing to work those hours especially when they have family. Basically the market is over supplied with accountants
