From the moment they started describing how this "dnd mmo" was run, especially at the mention of special tokens that let u kick players from games, I was highly suspect that anything good could come out of this experience

I thought the same thing. The moment someone would mention to me payment tiers and tokens to kick other player out of a game, i'd go "Nope, i'm out"...

The ability to kick a player out because you paid more cash than them is lame as hell.

As a paid GM, I can't say my experiences reflect these stories at all. I have a committed group, that are actively engaged in telling stories and shaping the world with their actions. I also never set the expectation that just because you're paying, you get free reign. You still follow the rules of my table, and the expectations of the group. I'll make sure you get to shine, and have fun, but that doesn't mean that only you get to have those moments. There's consequences in that world. What they do ripples and effects everything else. But it's mostly laughter or cheers as they win, or groans and tears when they fail. I haven't had a group as invested as those in my paid games, and they make each session memorable and fun. I'm here to facilitate that fun and to give them the world to thrive in. The most important part of forming a group, paid or not, is setting the expectation for the game. Have a chat with each other, decide what stories you want to tell, and create a world where those ideas can flourish. I've never had a murder hobo party, or a group that will sink into the depths of crime for a small gain. I have played in other paid games and still host my own weekly, and I can't recommend finding a good paid GM enough. The dedication and investment from the players is always something astounding.

As someone who has participated in multiple paid games I agree with you, these are more rare than some other genre of D&D horror stories, in my experience paid games are much more focused and fun

Just going off from other comments, but apparently, the original VA (Milo) got into NFT's and Crypto, not sure how that is related, but it had some effect, maybe they had a falling out and Milo left, I'm not sure. Honestly, kinda prefer the new VA myself, but then again, All Things D&D was never a channel I frequented all that often in comparison to others.

If it's an original setting with an attentive and accommodating DM, $35 a session is a bit on the high end, but still reasonable. Also, I for one could have done without that plug for his own games at the end.

I have D.M.’d for many years, the only pay to play option I encourage is the group bring snacks and drinks, they can alternate sessions and I encourage them to figure it out. That is the extent of my suggestions for pay to play.

Paying to play an RPG sounds like an awful idea. Find a local group and play there. Better yet create your own group and find a convenient LGS and make sure they will allow you to play there.

This is the reason why I will never ever ever ever ever ever do anything like that online. I will be 20 years dead and my ghost will never do that. I’m sorry when they think that the idea of switching dungeons and dragons completely and utterly online they have missed completely the point of the original creator of dungeons and dragons. Gary guygax this is why with the coast and Hasbro will fail.

Don't allow evil alignments in your pay to play games just like you stay away from pvp and you wont have those problems when you host a table.

Never had a problem in several decades of gaming with evil alignments or PvP as these are only problems with the maturity of players or not understanding how alignment works, since alignment is not under a player's control after they introduce their character into the campaign.

I think it’s fine to allow evil alignments but in order to do it right I’ve come up with three simple motivations to keep an evil character firmly on the party’s side. 1: Greed, you want in on that sweet loot and quest reward and while you might not care about the people you are helping you’ll do it for a paycheck. Adventuring pays well enough for you to stick with the party long term. 2: Reputation, you want to build a good reputation so no one will believe that you are evil and you can get away with a lot more. 3: You don’t like competition. Maybe the big bad is interfering with your own plans or they are closing in on your territory. Either way you want them gone and are likely to help the party make that happen.

@@thehollow4712 Paying to play is antithetical to the concept of D&D. I am not sure why anyone would pay to play in someone's fanfic to begin with. A DM should not interfere in player autonomy in any way. If the players decide to fight amongst themselves, that is there choice, the DM should not interfere. The players will figure out that they PvP is not all that enjoyable, but at times, it is appropriate to how the campaign unfolds. Just like the DM should never force the party together. If someone makes a character that the other players do not want in the party, that decision should be up to the other players. Just like it is up to other players if they want to play with a problematic player or a problematic character. As to alignment, the player gets to decide their alignment when they first make their character. Once play begins, their character's alignment will reflect their character's actions. So many that play D&D have characters that should have different alignments than what they are based on their actions. The reason they don't is because the DM is not doing their job. Alignment is under the DM's control. I would also point out that most creatures are unaware that they are evil, it is that their actions cause others harm that makes them evil. Other actions that make one evil are things like torture or being involved with slavery. In the old days where a paladin had to be lawful good, they would immediately lose their paladinhood if they tortured or allowed someone to be tortured, regardless of the reason. Now, paladins do not have to be lawful good, but still torturing someone or allowing someone to be tortured by one's party is still an evil act. D&D alignment has always been rigid from a very specific viewpoint, otherwise alignment doesn't work. When money gets involved, it muddies the game...

I avoid pay to play D&D. I already buy books why would I pay again to actually play? I have enough subscriptions to not have to add another especially a subpar one. Current group going on two years and is free. We play online because everyone is scattered across the world. Went from total strangers to friends who enjoy playing other games together too.

Paying to play is antithetical to whole concept of D&D. Part of the problem is that most campaigns are little more than fanfic, as while anyone can write a story, writing a great story is beyond most people's grasp. The same applies to DMing. Why would one want to pay for some sort of fanfic experience, generally by those who do not have a good grasp of how the game is supposed to be played, but have a whole list of homebrew rules.

You had a lot of good videos however now that you don't care about the quality of your content there is no need for me to support you with a subscription. I hope others will follow my lead and ditch this youtuber as they have moved to automation over quality. Edit for context - 0:35 - 0:45 and you will notice the issue with the voice.
