HOW I PAID My €150.000,- PILOT TRAINING By

Ойын-сауық

Until a couple of years ago anyone who passed the selection process in The Netherlands was able to get a full loan at a specific bank for the pilot training. This way of selecting people resulted at the time in an honest way of selecting pilots. They were selected because they passed the selection process, not because the students were rich. This situation has changed as there are now too many unemployed pilots out there.

I was studying in Russia, as I am native Russian, but was born abroad. Anyway they payed for all training and masters degree as well. This is my luck, because my parents are not so rich to pay for. After completion of training, it was not so easy to find the first job. Another luck a small company in Eastern Europe paid for type rating and now I have a contract for 5 years. In the end, I am A 320 first officer, 5 years contract warranty job, and I didn't pay for nothing.

But I’m gonna keep looking for ways to make my dream a reality. I’m thinking of trying to get a loan and going to a flight school in Canada or the us, because here in japan, flight training costs about four times the amount it costs in those countries. But even then, it’s much too expensive for my family to pay off so I’m currently trying to do more research on different kinds of loans that I can get. Wish me luck:)

I think in most Western countries, the state is the ultimate guarantor of the loans, specifically, student loans. In the US, we have a lot of problem when colleges overcharge for mediocre education and the hapless students got stuck with the high loan amount. The colleges do not fear of not getting the money because the loans are guaranteed by the tax payers. ;(

In the aftermatch of the Germanwings FO crashing the plane, this huge financial pressure was also discussed. It's no excuse, of course not, but it's likely that it was one of the reasons he kept his medical problems a secret and then also psychologically was on a downward spiral. I guess with the Covid situation the financial pressure got really tough for many young pilots as well. And this is bad. Financial debt can be crippling to one's abilities, and the last thing I would want being on a plane is a flight crew that is stressed to the max and under pressure because of a huge debt. 😕😕

In Norway, you can get a loan from something that we call "Lånekassen", it's where students get their student loans etc. Some of it will be converted into a stipend (if you pass your exams) , but the rest is a loan that you have to pay back. Recently, the government raised the amount that you can loan, so that you now can finance your pilot training in full (it's cheaper in Norway, at least at my ATO, it's about 73-75k euro for 2 years. It gives you PPL, CPL IR/ME plus ATPL credits).

Hi, i live in sweden and the government are NOT PAYING for the pilotraining, the CSN just give you some money after high school but it is still not enough, so most people who are going to became pilots already have a job which allows them to borrow from the bank. But if you not have a job it will be really hard for the person that going to pay alone.

in the usa , most pilots pay for a few courses at a time and get experience as an instructor for the previous lower courses.. this gives them flight hours for free and time to work on the next rating.. there are advanced schools.. but most of those students are foreigners that can afford those high costs.. most american pilots probably spend 50k to become a jet pilot and a 1000 hours.. but its a slow process and many do spend more for faster fulltime courses.... hugggs dear

It is interesting to hear how you got started and great that you got to where you are. When I left school it is what I wanted to do. Like you here you have to fund your own training znd there is no guarantee that you will have a job. You were also expected to have a BGT, multi- engine endorsement, SCPL and Class 1 rating plus a few thousand hours logged. I don't think it has changed much. People worked as flight instructors or small feeder airlines (if you were lucky) with the hope of finding a job with the big boys before you reached 26 years old and became too old for srlection. At the time I was trying to get started the airlines had a ready pool of experienced ex-military pilots king courtesy of the Vietnam war. I never made the airlines or anywhere else in aviation, but after 20 years I had ticked most of the boxes. That's life. You have enjoy and most of all have fun.

As I told under another video, in our European country - Latvia, with a minimal salary about 300eur and average with about 600, even with a really good salary which is considered to be between 1200..2500, it is almost impossible to pay for the loan, especially, if You are paying rent, feeding family. Someone told that You can try work for 4 years and then go for loan... as You see - it is still so small number, but training and instructions cost about the same. The most realistic way is to have some property from heritage, wining lottery, bank robbery or really rich parents.

Hi Dutch pilot girl, you should be so proud of yourself for what you have achieved, especially considering that you have funded your education for your pilots license yourself. I did a similar thing with my HGV class one driving license, I earned it, just like you've done by paying for the training yourself. Ok you win hands down, pilots license v's HGV.... Lol. But I'm sure you understand what I mean. I've only just started watching your flight landings that I enjoy watching. Thank you for sharing your video's on youtube. Keep up the good work and congratulations.

I am glad you did what you wanted to do. There is a saying where there is a will, there is a way. As I said in one of your previous videos. I always wanted to be a Flight Purser, but never succeeded. I wanted to join the merchant navy and did not succeed there too. So I eventually moved to Perth. I am happy with what I have achieved. I enjoy your videos. When I fly to Bali or Thailand. I sit on the beach and watch the planes taking off and landing. Well I am a firm believer. Like in your case, you made all the necessary sacrifices to borrow a lot money to achieve your dream. Now that you have achieved your dream. You can pay that loan back. I have a lot of school friends that have joined the merchant navy or the airlines. I wish you all the best.

AFTER I graduated they reinstated the GI Bill but would not pay my loans, but I could take additional courses and the GI Bill would pay for the NEW courses. I got my pilot's license at my own expense but used the GI Bill to pay for Instrument, commercial, and multi-engine licenses and certifications. Enjoyed flying very much. Where I live are lots of mountains and instrument flying. Favorite single is the Pilatus C10. Have a great day!

Hi there. I found this quite informative. You mentioned your side-business for paying off your loan, what exactly is it - the monetisation from youtube channel? Also, the title is "How I payed my loan", yet at the time it's recorded you say that you still have the loan - what side-business do you recommend as being realistically able to pay off such a large debt. You trained at Oxford? How did you secure the loan? Do you have a house to secure it against, or did your parents let you secure it against theirs? Just curious because I've looked into that route, and all the loans available for this must be secured against property. They don't give unsecured loans for that amount.

I am working and doing pilot training step by step. For example for CPL(A) you need 200h flight time. I try to get as much hours I can on towing gliders. It's like flying for free. But on towing it take much time to get many hours. On a very very very good weekend I can get 5 hours maybe. So you can imagine how much I time you need to get 200h flight time on towing gliders...

You are great also because of your selfmade career! In Switzerland there is a possiblity to enter in the military aircraft just at 17 and this nearly for free. After this you have the possibility to make courses for civil aviation: as a swiss military pilot, this is only a complementary thing.

You really need to be determined and have the grades to be able to get that airline position. Funding your flight school privately is undoubtedly costly, it would be good to hear from pilots who spent the cash but didn't quite cut it to get that well paying airline job. It would give a reality check for those that are dreaming about it, and what sort of job to expect if you don't do so well.
