How I Pack My Backpack For An Overnight Backpacking Trip
How I Pack My Backpack For An Overnight Backpacking Trip // Over the weekend, I took a group of students from my online backpacking program for women, The Confident Solo Female Backpacker System on a 3 day/2 night backpacking trip along the Chelan Lakeshore Trail here in Washington State.
In this video, I’m not only taking you with me on our backpacking trip, but I’m also going to show you all of the backpacking gear and food I brought with me and show you how I packed my backpack for this overnight trip.
The Chelan Lakeshore Trail is a great place for an early season backpacking trip here in Washington because it’s low enough elevation that there’s no snow on trail, the whole area is surrounded by beautiful snow-capped mountains, the trail hugs the coast of Lake Chelan for most of the way, there’s tons of wildflowers throughout the area and you get to end your hike in the cute little town of Stehekin. Our hike was a total of 17 miles and 4,100 feet of elevation gain over three days and two nights.
THIS is what is looks like to achieve your backpacking goals.

I seriously can’t believe that the backpacking season has just started for us in the PNW and I’ve already been out on 2 weekend trips! This time last year I had never been backpacking before, didn’t have a tent or overnight pack, and had no idea how to plan or prepare for a backpacking trip. I’m so excited for all of the adventures I have planned for this season, and I have you and the Confident Solo Female Backpacker System to thank for making this dream a reality for me!

So proud of you!! Thank you for having me be a part of your backpacking journey!! I'm excited to follow along and see all of the places you go this year.
Great video. Your loadout and weight it so much more reasonable compared to allot of the ultra light set ups I come across! I also love what you do for the hiking community. Keep it up!

Thank you, but I would never consider myself ultralight...not even close. Just ultra comfortable while trying to keep my base weight down to something reasonable that doesn't hurt my body when hiking long miles. :)
❤ I bet everyone have fun... I can't wait to be part of it🎉

I subscribed to your channel. I’m going backpacking on the timberline trail July 23-26
I have been using my Teton bag for years because it was affordable and large enough but after seeing your gear load out (after watching literally hundreds of backpacking gear load out videos and never seeing a backpack that check off al the boxes) I am finally sold on the Gossmar Gear Mariposa and I am going to make the much needed upgrade!!! It was also awesome to see that it was the Editor's Choice on Outdoor Gear Lab.

I LOVE my GG Mariposa 60. It's all about those pockets. I never realized how important having all of those pockets were to me until I discovered this bag. My love for this pack has converted many new GG Mariposa 60 users out on trail lately and I'm not mad about it. It's a great investment.

Great video, I was all ready to sign up even purchased some of the recommended gear but had a painful knee issue ☹️ had X-rays yesterday and found out it’s due to osteoarthritis so being referred to an orthopedic Dr so I’m hoping this is something I can heal without surgery in time for next year….so disappointed as you all look like a great group and this was a wonderful video, thank you Kathleen! ♥️🥾🎒⛺️

Can I get the name of the song and artist on that first song? I’m adoring it. Actually, the name and artist of all the songs would be appreciated. Perfect road trip music

You’re best bet is to download the Shazam app and Shazam the songs you’re interested. The app can probably tell you the name of song and artist quicker than I can. I get all of the music for my videos from Epidemic Sound though! 😀
Always love seeing how everyone packs! How much did your food weigh for 3days 2 nights?! And more importantly, I just started carrying Uncrustables too! How long do you think they keep while backpacking!?
@TheHungryHiker
Жыл бұрын
Of course I forget to weigh my food for this trip so I have no idea how much my food weighed, but it was a lot less than some of my previous trips. This week after coming back from this trip, I ordered my own sandwich cutter to use to make my own Uncrustables for future hikes and overnight backpacking trips. Here's the link to what I got: amzn.to/45d4gC2 The Uncrustables I purchased from the store were put into my Ursack on Thursday morning and I ate my last one on Saturday afternoon for lunch. Both the Uncrustable and myself were fine. It's just a PB&J sandwich, sans crust so other than them getting a little squished in my food bag, they were a-okay. For day hikes, I'll make my own homemade Uncrustable at home the night before, throw them in the freezer and then take them out and put them in my pack to be eaten at lunch along my hike.

@@TheHungryHiker Thank you so much for the thorough answer! The food looked dialed in for sure. Thanks for the link for the maker, another “piece of gear” 😅 to order. Most googling says less than 24hours on those bad boys…Ok, same I’ve packed a couple & ate them up to two days later as well 👍 Both “Uncrustable & myself were fine” has me dead haha. Gonna have to try and make some of my own as well! Thank you. Keep on keeping on🤙

😂do you hike to Stehehin just for the bake goods?4 times!!!?I admit, that bakery, is so great😊!the only bad part it's a what's 3 miles from "downtown "?
@TheHungryHiker
Жыл бұрын
I'll admit, visiting the Stehekin Bakery is always a huge highlight whenever I'm in Stehekin. The PCT kind of goes near Stehekin and most PCT thru-hikers will come into town during their thru-hike, which is part of the reason why I've hiked here four times now. First time was along with PCT thru-hike in 2018, second time was when I sectioned hiked Section K on the PCT in 2021. Third time was last year when I first hiked the Chelan Lakeshore Trail and then this year's hike along the Chelan Lakeshore Trail would be my fourth time hiking into Stehekin. And yes, the bakery is THAT good. Totally worth hiking in for.
Do you only carry one liter of drinking water at a time, filling up as you find it? How does your water system work?
@TheHungryHiker
3 ай бұрын
Depending on where I'm hiking, I usually carry two litters of water at a time, one liter in a collapsible bottle that sits on the shoulder strap of my pack and one liter in a Smart water bottle that I carry in an outside pocket on my pack. I have a 2 liter dirty water bag so if I know I'll be camping at a dry camp (a camp without a water source), I'll fill my dirty water bag and carry that in my pack to my campsite so that I have an extra two liters of water. Whenever I get to a water source, I'll "camel" up and drink a liter of water as I'm filtering more water for my water bottles. Hope this helps!

Do you not use a camel pack for water
@TheHungryHiker
Жыл бұрын
I actually don't use a camel pack (or hydration reservoir) to carry water when out on trail. I use a 1 liter collapsible CNOC water bottle, just like I show in the video along with my 2 liter CNOC Vecto dirty water bag. That's not to say you can't use a hydration reservoir to carry your water in if you want to. I actually used a hydration reservoir along my first PCT thru-hike in 2018 and did just fine. The nice thing about backpacking is there's no one right way to do something. We all do things a little differently based on our tastes, comfort levels, needs, budgets and the types of trips we plan. What may work for you, might not work for someone else...and that's perfectly okay.
