How I Plan My Backpacking Trips | Choosing Trails, Creating Itineraries + Trip Planning Resources

How I Plan My Backpacking Trips | Choosing Trails, Creating Itineraries + Trip Planning Resources // If you’re new to backpacking, the trip planning portion of any trip can be intimidating and confusing. I know as a beginner backpacker, I always felt overwhelmed with planning my trips because I often had no idea where to even start.
In this video, I’m going to walk you through my whole trip planning process of how I planned our recent group backpacking trip with students from The Confident Solo Female Backpacker System to the Chelan Lakeshore Trail in Washington State.
I’ll show you how I came up with our trip itinerary including our exact route, how we got to the trailhead, figured out where we’d camp each night and where the water sources would be along the trail and introduce you to one of my favorite trip planning and on-trail navigation tools.

You have taught me SO much about trip planning over the past 2 years! I went from getting overwhelmed trying to figure out where to go, to confidently planning both solo trips, and trips with friends! I’m even planning a trip this year that involves off trail route-finding 😯 which is something I never would have thought I would be doing. Honestly, trip planning is now one of my favorite things to do in my down time. And yes, this is a shameless brag on your program The Confident Solo Female Backpacker System! But I love that you also share this information here on KZread for free, for anyone to access.

Candace - You are proof that trip planning doesn't have to be this big, scary thing. When you do the work, put in the time and are open to facing your fears, amazing things can and WILL happen! I'm so proud of you. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your incredible backpacking journey. I'm so excited to see where you go next!!

Wonderful video...but I may be a bit biased because this is one of my most favorite places in the whole wide world. All my personal biases aside, thank you for the information - particularly regarding app's that can help an old codger like me figure things out without having to try to use Google and old-school paper maps...

Also, look up road conditions if going on an unpaved/forest roads.

Absolutely! Checking all the conditions (roads, trails and weather) before going on a backpacking trip is very important.

Looking online it says that trail difficulty is Hard. But your video makes it look pleasant. What difficulty rating would you give it?

  • @TheHungryHiker

Yes, the power of editing. This is quite a pleasant hike as long as you're trained up and have prepared for it. I wouldn't consider this a beginner hike by any means. Don't let these pretty views fool you. We were all working very hard out there and struggling in the heat at times. The Chelan Lakeshore Trail is a tough hike, especially when you're carrying a loaded pack. onX Backcountry rates this one as Moderate. AllTrails has this one marked as Hard. What can make hiking this trail challenging is the heat, the exposure (there's not a lot of shade on the trail in the first 11 miles) and the elevation gain along the trail as you make your way into Stehekin. The first 11 miles of this trail (from Prince Creek to Moore Point) are the toughest. The last 7 miles into Stehekin has a few ups and downs and exposed areas, but there's more shade and the trail hugs the lake shore for some of those miles, especially the closer you get to Stehekin.
