How I overcame my fear of dying while falling asleep using Cognitive Behaviour Therapy CBT

Here is the full video summarising all of Poppy’s sessions with Dr. Daniela Rossi. Poppy discusses how she overcame her anxiety disorder which involved being terrified she was going to die while falling in to sleep. Using strategies which helped Poppy challenge her thinking and change her behaviours she finally overcame her fear and is now sleeping really well.

I'm a disabled veteran from the Iraq War and a recovering addict. Recently, I'm guessing about 4-6 months ago I started having this happen. Your description on how it feels and what you do to "kickstart" your heart is exactly how it feels. My psychiatrist claims it's insomnia due to a lot of grief. They are going to try and reset my sleep with an older medication in hopes I can get this under control. I am so glad I'm not the only one. I've felt very alone with this and like I'm not explaining it correctly. I hope you continue to get better and if you do get better, it never comes back.

its very reassuring Im not alone with this. The thought of sleep always terrified me for the lack of control you have, my mind refuses to let go of conciousness. to the point i've experienced sleep paralysis on a regular basis. powerful fears start arising. what helped for me was easing my mind with the thought that i didnt have to sleep, but i just haf to get easy with the moments before sleep when you feel concioussness dimming and just trying to explore that state in a peaceful way, allowing yourself to wake if your minds start rebelling. Kind of like enjoying the view on top of a cliff instead of jumping off. eventually your body will do the rest before you have the chance to be scared.

Me too, I'm having such a hard time, I have been dealing with this for 15 years ! It started out of the blue when I was 19-years-old after a surgery, I had what they said was a panic attack. It was the most terrifying thing in the world, I remeber saying to myself "if I just sleep everything will be better" however, I was feeling so horrible physically and it just popped into my head "you might die in your sleep" and I have been terrified every since, my life completely runied. I'm now having a really bad bout of fear, I can't get to sleep until 5-6 a.m. and wake up at 11am feeling unrested, anxious, and sweating. I just want to love sleep again and be able to sleep with no problem like years before. I need some help, however, I'm a poor single mother and help only seems to be available to the wealthy. I cry all day because I cant be a mother to my child, I'm anxious and severly tried all day, my daughter is 12-years-old and she has always known me to be this way, tried and unable to cope and live a normal life. If you found some why to help yourself, please let me know. Maybe it will help me as well.

Thank you for this video - helped me put things in to words and not feel alone with this. Been suffering from this on and off since childhood recently it's been effecting me a lot.Identifying a lot with walzing around the problem via staying up too late, avoiding going to sleep and associating all activities ie brushing teeth getting ready etc winding down (which are nice in themselves) with the fear thus creating a vicious cycle of procrastination sleeping in too late etc. Also been wanting to find a way of solving this problem as opposed to just avoiding the root of it. One thing I do at my worst (at its worst) is to set an alarm to go off maybe 10 - 30 minutes after having dozed off to break up the sleep in smaller portions and "avoid" what my brain finds scary about the "long void" or duration of time of which I'll be unconscious. Hope to find ways to get help!

I recently developed this 3-4 months back and it has gotten to the point that I would stay up until 4-5am then slip in to sleep from exhaustion, but even then these days it has gotten worse and I don't even try to sleep anymore since the feeling is so horrible, as a result my health and thought process is just messed up. I'm typing this at 6am in the morning and still don't feel an ounce of sleepiness even if I feel like I'm dying from exhaustion. I hope I can get better soon.

For the past 2 years, I feel like my body's condition has been deteriorating in multiple ways.. I'm not too sure what is causing all my symptoms but I suddenly developed a fear for dying. I'm starting to realise that I've been suddenly dreading my sleep for the past few days. I used to love sleeping as a form of an my escape or chance to lucid dream but right now, I've suddenly developed this fear.

Sin separated us from God (everyone sins) and that leads to an punishment, (hell) but Jesus came down from heaven and died for sins , Now there is a free gift of salvation and whoever believes in the one and only one Jesus, you can have eternal life in heaven and escape punishment.

Thank you for making the video Poppy , it can't have been easy to talk about this irrational fear . I have it and last night not a wink of sleep . I have all the classic symptoms as you . The only thing that helps at the moment is alcohol , not the best treatment but it shuts my brain down . I have had the problem for some time , go to bed and my brain goes into hyper drive , shortness of breath and specially disorientated and have to get up . I hope you are better now and that you never have this problem again . Take care

Ever since a negative experience with weed, I've been struggling with an issue that I never had before. Initially, I used small amounts of weed to help me relax at night, but one night I accidentally took too much, and when it kicked in, I thought it was going to be my last night. I was advised to go to bed if I had a bad experience, but the anxiety I felt was overpowering. The fear of dying prevented me from sleeping, and this feeling persisted every night afterward, causing me to wake up with a racing heart in the morning. Sometimes, the racing heart would occur before bed, during sleep, and in the mornings, and it was so severe that my body would shake from the stress. To address this anxiety, I turned to an ebook called DARE, which provided significant help in managing my symptoms. Additionally, I discovered that I was deficient in magnesium, a common deficiency among many people. I started taking a magnesium supplement containing various types of magnesium, initially at 500mg daily. It took some time to adjust, but it proved to be beneficial. However, recently, the fear of death at night has resurfaced, without the racing heart. To tackle this, I plan on increasing my magnesium intake to 500mg again before bedtime. I feel more secure sleeping during the day or with the lights on when this feeling arises, but I typically need to be extremely tired to fall asleep. Despite feeling exhausted before bed, as soon as I lie down, worry sets in. My nose starts to feel congested, and my chest tightens, leading me to panic, fearing I can't breathe. Swallowing becomes difficult, further exacerbating my anxiety. Once I start drifting off to sleep, I experience a queasy stomach and a nervous sensation similar to the feeling of free-falling, causing me to become alert once again. It usually takes going through this cycle a few times before I can finally fall asleep. At one point, my condition was so severe that when I woke up with heavy eyes and slightly blurry vision, I would panic, thinking my body was shutting down. I would often leap out of bed and rush to the bathroom, splashing cold water on my face to reassure myself that I wasn't going to die. It's quite absurd when I think about it now. However, one valuable lesson I learned from that night of taking too much weed is the incredible power of the mind. I hope you're able to find peace of mind. It's currently 3 am for me, and I'll attempt to do the same.

I came across this exact anxiety.Had to speak with a psychiatrist which formulated Clonazepam in droplets. The first night it eliminated my sleep anxiety completely "fear of dying" and allowed me to sleep with no fear ...after a couple of weeks I was able to get off the medication and rewired my brain to feeling safe again at bedtime..but I have to agree that I went sleepless 9 days because of this anxiety..felt like I was having a heart attack everytime it triggered at bed time..worst feeling ever..but sometimes certain medication can help for these situations

I can't sleep. Everytime I try to sleep I always think that I'll stop breathing, Jesus will take away me, and whatever whatever. I've been talking to myself that "everything is gonna br okay, when I wake up tomorrow you'll make good breakfast and send some fruits to my neighbor". And then I tried to sleep and my body will jolts by itself because the heart no breath. Like sleep apnea. It's 04.15 am here. September 27 2021. And I haven't slept .

Feel helpless when asleep, I wake up out off breath in a panic. I had been rolled up in a carpet and zipped up in a suit case as a child so i have a hard time sleeping at night. My nose has been broken since 2nd grade so i grew up unable to breath well out of my nose. To sleep i must fall asleep sitting up watching videos to distract my brain sometimes getting less than 2 hours of sleep a night. Getting heart and lungs looked at soon!

I have this a little bit. I'm not scared that I'm going to die, but the process of what sleeping actually is kinda freaks me out a little bit. Like the idea of just giving up your consciousness. I know I'm gonna way up again. I'm not worried about that. I think it's because I can never really remember the exact moment I fall asleep. I don't have that feeling of somewhere between asleep and awake. It's just like someone switching off a light and it just really freaks me out.
