How I Make YouTube Videos

A behind the scenes look at my KZread setup.
Check out the Maidesite S2 Standing Desk (paid link): shrsl.com/3yde7
This is a behind the scenes look at where I record my videos. I started with with a very cheap setup and have slowly upgraded components over time to what I consider an "enthusiastic amateur" level.
If you've ever thought about making your own videos this will give you a glimpse into what is involved; as well as what lighting, camera, lens, microphones, and software I'm using, and why I selected them.

A number of these items are supply-constrained so you may be able to find them cheaper or more readily in-stock elsewhere, depending on the day and your location.

Thank you for sharing details about your setup. "Moving blankets" - that is clever. I was thinking about a cheap acoustic treatment for my setup. But "Moving blankets" is so simple.

Thanks! I can't claim to have invented the idea, but It's a great way to cover a lot of surface area at relatively little cost.

Hey Andrew! Enjoying your content as always. I was wondering what your thoughts were on Microsoft Defender for Business. There's surprisingly little opinion pieces or reviews out there on how effective it is at something like ransomware protection. The regular Defender hasn't really held its own against premium antivirus products like Kaspersky, but could Defender for Business, or would deployment of DfB still mean having to rely on a separate third-party solution in your opinion?

Thanks! It seems like a pretty good deal from what I've seen, but I quite like the basic one, too. It may not get the higest scores but it does pretty well and it seems to cause fewer problems of its own. Ransomware for businesses has moved on a fair bit from just the trojan-like malware that encrypts your drive and demands money. These days ransomware events often have human actors on the other end actively hacking into networks, locating the crown jewels, and destroying backups before launching the encryption and threatening to release sensitive material. They often lurk on the network doing reconnaissance and escalating their privileges during the early stages so if you can detect and shut them down quickly you can avoid most of the damage. I think antivirus is now insufficient and you need EDR/XDR because the real damage comes from the threat actors with persistent access and they know how to evade antivirus. There are more premium options like CrowdStrike, but Defender for Business seems to be a pretty affordable EDR option - especially if you're already signed up for M365 services where it may already be bundled. One catch with these tools is that they spit out a lot of data so to get full value from them you really need to have a security team reviewing the alerts and doing threat-hunting. Smaller businesses may not be able to spare the resource so they often sign up with an MSSP for this.
