How I Make Firework Hemispheres

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I show how to make 5" hemi's using a softball as a former. The wheat paste used can be made via the process shown in this video: • How to Make Wheat Paste
Recent News: A set of DVDs is now available from the KZread user displayfireworks1 that goes through the process of obtaining a Type 54 ATF license (The license required to purchase 1.3 commercial fireworks). Not only does the license allow you to buy commercial fireworks, but it is also the same license required to allow you to transport fireworks you have built yourself. I highly recommend you take a look. More information on these DVDs along with how to order them can be found here:

    @r2darky Sure do. Those are rolled stars. You throw something like fine birdseed in a bowl or cement mixer and get it turning around while you spray it with water and throw composition over it. Eventually the comp starts building up on the seed which forms your stars. To make stars change color you start by adding one color of composition, then switch to adding layers of another color. When the stars are ignited they burn from the outside in.

    It is that style yes. The tumbler itself has broken down, but i saved the barrels as extras for a new mill.

    It's ok if the hemispheres are thin. The pasting on the outside of the hemi's after they've been filled with stars and burst is what needs to be strong.

  • @Nighthawkinlight
    @Nighthawkinlight14 жыл бұрын

    Absolutely. The strength of a ball shell comes with the pasting. The actual hemisphere only needs to provide minimal structural support. If you want them stronger it's a simple task to put on another layer or two.

    @daytonpyro It's actually a little large for a 4" and a little small for a 5". I've found that better formers are some variety's of foam balls from Walmart or wherever. This is also not the greatest pasting method. I'll have to do an updated video at some point. In the meantime you can learn quite a bit about pasting by browsing the threads over at amateurpyro(dot)com.

    @r2darky 4 layers is fine, they should be thin. You increase the thickness when you paste the shell later.

    I did one a long while ago on 3" shells. It was taken down and I am yet to post a new one. You can count on one when I get around to filling those and other hemispheres.

    @3981784 That is a press for making juice. They are used in fireworks for making rockets, comets, and pressed stars. That press is too small for rockets though. Most people use larger presses, but I got a deal for that one at a garage sale.

    Yes that's true, but it's no big deal to flex them back into shape once again when dry. Even factory made hemis often are bent in shipping, but it doesn't hurt the final result once reshaped.

    @panzuman Nitrate can cost less than $1/lb if you can find a supplier of agricultural grade. I believe Skylighter is having a sale for nitrate at ~$2/lb. It might be over by now.

    Yes very often. It's a shame that it broke down only because I have nothing I can mill BP in right now, but really an upgrade has been needed for a long time. I need something with a 2 gallon capacity to accommodate my heavy use. That would be ideal. I hated to have to run my dual barrel mill several times for a single shell.

    i finished making 4" hemis with a baseball rather than a softball. although i dont know how im going to get it to fit in my mortar when its done because its just the hemis right now and it is 1" too small. thats 1/2" on each side. theres now way pasted kraft could fill all that without stiffling the break. maybe ill try it as an experiment. have any other suggestions?

  • @krssnoop

    the good thing about keeping the ball inside the hemispheres after cutting is it will maintain its shape while drying. in the past I have had a few that were out of shape after the paste had fully cured..

    I know it's bad but I used 4" pvc for the mortar so it was right around 4". I actually layered a few layers of paper on the inside of the hemi once it was dried to make it a bit thicker, but that is still weird because my hemis were around a 3.5" ID

  • @pablopicasso6699
    @pablopicasso66999 жыл бұрын

    Just a question of curiosity. Why do you not make the hemi's from card formers like the chinese ones? Your way is far more expensive, using so much more paper and paste for exactly the same results. Also the time it takes to make two hemi's is ridiculous in comparison. If you are unsure of the shape to cut for the former eg the different sizes (1",2",3" etc etc...) I could send you the patterns for the cutouts in a pdf file if you want to save a hell of a lot of time.

    so i made my first one, haha it was pretty messy, i hope this one will turn out good when i add powders. my second one looks pretty good, almost perfect o.o but it looks thin, i hope it's thick enough for the shell to burst out hard. my 3rds shell needs to dry now, i used more than 30 strips in my 3rd one.
