Hey guys! Here's the promised video of me maintaining my own dreads. I did half a head this time. From a fuzzy mess to... a less fuzzy mess.

What is the size for the big hook? 1mm or more? I've got 0,75 but it seems pretty difficult to do it with a bunch of long, loose hairs... or I just have no patience at all...

This is such a great video! Where/How did you learn your technique for self maintenance? I'd love to learn to do this for myself. Any resources or references that you could share would be great! All in all, thank you for this video!!! 🫶🏾V

I had short sides and I ended up growing out my sides so I could do my hairstyles with my dreads. I love your shaved sides!

Do you find it easy to pick up all the dreads into an updo with the sides long?

Yes, after they loosen up a little bit after they’ve been done. I grew my sides out long enough to dread, then I added extensions

Again amazing thank you for this. I’m going to maybe try my own. I just get all like perfectionist when I’m trying to make sure the new or loose hair goes in which dread? Bc it’s not sectioned perfectly. It was done just like whatever. :) the advice at end “just got to a locktitian” there are none in miami. Not one, I think I’ve found my next job/craft .

April Yount hi! People do travel to CT to get their dreads done by Avani... but it might be a cool business to start if there is no one anywhere within 1-2 hrs drive distance from you. Just do a ton of research and practice on friends! I didn’t realize there weren’t more videos on this... I know people talk about the crochet method... As far as interlocking, if the hair has locked it might not be possible to undo, if the section is not too tight you might be able to crochet over it to even out the bumps. Black locticians often will use a hook to pull the dreads through the roots, but it’s not what we mean by crochet at all... Interlocking leads to dreads that are locked too tightly and retain moisture and residue, and eventually the roots thin because most people tighten too much. Avoid it going forward for sure...

i’ve had deadlocks for three years now and I find myself pulling hairs out of other dreadlocks that don’t belong into them and I feel like that makes me have more loose hairs so I really need to go get a touchup soon but I just hate when hair from one dread goes into another one...

iitskeykey ! Yeah, it’s all about personal preference, some people love the look of free forming locks, which involves no clear sectioning. Happy dreading!
