    Awesome that the dollars are in your favor Tom! The system is a great idea. I see an old Caddy in the driveway??? Up coming video? Also I'd like to see some of the tractor stuff. Land clearing and such. Maybe a time lapse if you recorded any work. Take care!

    Great system and well done on the profiteering that is really impressive. Scary RE: the wires almost burning out. Always use thicker wire than you calculate (and I wager you didn't calculate quite correctly based on the length of the cabling and the suggested 20% rule so add 20% gauge (or de-rate the system power by 20%) if you are running those amps for long periods (hours). I really think that you should get rid of most of the outback stuff (keep 1) and run sunny boy inverters they work nice with the sunny islands and it's a much more efficient system as your solar power is directly converted to the AC out to use which reduces the load on your battery and chare controller etc (with much smaller cable gauge required and much easier wiring). Keep up the good work.

    Great video & an awesome find. It looks like your battery & inverter spacing is really close together. I’m waiting to get a 9.5kWh battery & 3.6KW inverter installed & I hadn’t taking into account the much larger component spacing that’s required.

    Yea it's closer than it should be but because it's in such a huge area even when EQ'ing the batteries the off gassing never gets very thick.

    Do you ever plan on going completely off grid and removing your meter? I would imagine the $18 a month in fees is probably worth keeping simply for redundancy, or avoiding those winter days when you don't want to clean off your panels or don't generate enough power to run your house. Seeing how you integrate your two power feeds would be an interesting video, though I imagine that is not ready for prime time yet given you are still figuring things out... Assuming you currently only have one set of wires going between your garage panel and the main panel, to avoid backfeeding the grid, you could install an interlock on your main panel in your house, then have the solar power as a dedicated feed to your garage panel where your old garage power feed would now feed your house with solar power via the interlock. Problem with that config is your garage would have no power if solar ever went down, or you would have to remove the interlock to go back to feeding your garage with utility power. Do they make auto transfer switches for a hybrid set up like yours?

    I'm going to hold onto the grid for a $15 a month safety blanket because you just never know....and yes, snow is an issue for the panels on the flatter portion of my garage but they take no more than 3 days (usually) to clear and we can live off the batteries and the steeper portion during that time. The power feeds are handled quite elegantly through the SMA inverters so not much to show there. They are built for this kind of configuration. Great comment, questions BTW!

    @@batteryaddiction1848 I believe they will be going higher... right now I can get 22-25k... last time auctions were going the next auction they sold for 30k (with transport and auction premiums) I know after talking with people on the inside there is only about 70-100 left then the liquidation is done... supply going... prices will start to get closer to fair value which is 30-40k (front box with inverters 11k... generator 10k... trailer 6.5k... batteries 9k... light towers 10k... panels... welding... electrical... 5k+ and the aluminum fuel tank... that is $50k in value... so 30-40k is still a fantastic deal... my units have 2-120 hours

    Was it safe to cut that steel with that circuit board so close? I am in Illinois and several years ago there was a study that the midwest states have to much cloud cover. Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Missouri, Iowa and Minnesota. So it will not be beneficial to do any of this.

    I heard there was loss due to heat, but almost half power in summer vs spring? wow thats alot, i think would make cooling worth it, say you spend 1kw on cooling to gain 8kw of efficieny back, could be worth it.

  • @Trialnerror

    @Trialnerror

    Yea, a lot of people rig up a water cooling system that sprays a mist, captures it and pumps it through a radiator and back up to the panels for just that reason. If I was in a warm weather state I'd be doing that for sure. Here in NH, it's just one more thing to winterize so I'll take what I can get :)

    I am waiting to hear about the fire from the gas buildup with having those lead acid battery's in your garage. Get those vented to the exterior before they blow up. Anyone who has experienced the deafening sound of a explosion from one off gassing cell would know NOT to leave these unvented anywhere there is something valuable.

    IF one take a fire safety course at a power generation plant (i did in 1978) where i worked , one learns that you need the correct air/fuel ratio and an IGNITION SOURCE in order to create an explosion!

    @@steffybael1245 But it DOES happen! I have vivid memories of being about 6 or 7 years old waiting in the car in front of a service center watching the guys work....and a battery exploding right in a mechanics face. I watch his hand reach to the battery, touch something and instantly **BOOOOM!** It was like a cartoon with the content of the battery enveloping his head for split second...Then came the screams and everyone running around and flushing his face and eyes with water. Thank God lead acid batteries are much safer today.

    the only technology (in lead acid batteries) that has changed is the cases are made of plastic instead of rubber (what the cases were made of that made them discharge into a concrete floor if you placed them directly on the concrete). in the example you gave , the battery must have either been on a charger or the generator on the car was charging the battery. a battery produces the hydrogen sulfide gas only when it is charging. the mechanic had to short the battery with his wrench to cause a spark to ignite the gases! I AM A 65 YEAR OLD MAN, MARRIED TO STEFFY. I USE HER OLD ACCOUNT BECAUSE GOOGLE HAS BANNED ME FROM ALL ITS PLATFORMS FOR LIFE MORE THAN 1 TIME! i worked at an oldsmobile dealership in 1977 as a mechanic making $9.78 an hour! in 2008 to 2015, i worked for a friend that had a golf car business, so i really learned a lot more about batteries working there, it is where i learned to use a capacitor and a home built bridge rectifier and an electric cord to shock a string of deep cycle batteries with 110 volts DC and at 60 cycles, to bring them back to life to use in the shop forklifts we used as lifts! the first place i lived off grid was in the mountains of arkansas back in around 1982, was 10 miles back in the national forest , and the log cabin was built in 1876. my golf car is custom wired with 3 large Anderson connectors, that i designed to convert the 36 volt battery bank to 12 volts to power mobile equipment and to charge them at 12 volts with 1 solar panel on its roof. its got big mud tires on it, and i switch it back to 36 volts to drive it where ever i desire to have power! sorry about the long explanation but even my letters to friends are 6 pages long! i use to have a prison ministry and because i spent 10 years in prison, i know how it feels to not get many letters in prison, and long ones tend to make up for that! @@JViello
