My latest lil Tinker project! A mini inflatable wacky waving air dancing tubeman! Or 'Fry' as named by one of my insta friends! And yes he's french pun surely intended
I wanted to teach myself a lil bit hardware and electronics, so I made him out of old broken stuff that I learnt how to fix! I fixed the hairdryer motor, adaptor and switch! I am not an engineer by any means! I made so many mistakes in the process, (including electrifying myself 3 times) and documented parts of it! Din't want to make hours of video, so this is a short "tutorial" with a tiny bit of explanation. For parts I did not explain, you can ask me in the comments, and also I am sure there are many people on youtube who can explain these things better than me.

haha yes! I thought it's super smart when I found out about the coil too!... I knew that not every paint sticks to plastic but I totally forgot I don't know how! I actually switched on the fan after spraying it, disaster, still cleaning the space from all this yellow paint! I found one type of spray called 'Krylon' (I think) this one can bond to plastic, and also saw some use copic markers in an air brush! I wont find any of these in Egypt, so he will just slowly chip for now haha!

whoever "thumbs downed" is jealous of your skills! I thought I'd share my experience with you because I'm still laughing at myself. I had the idea to make one of these and was super excited to find your upcycled version! So I bought as many blow dryers as I could find at goodwill and some Nylon track pants that I'm going to sew as the body once I get the blower working... I watched your video a few times and just glossed over the things I didn't understand. The first being "the heating element acts as a resistor." I then figured you were just fixing the pieces you were using, not understanding that the 12V is necessary to not short the circuit with the 125V plug the blow dryer is originally attached to. Thankfully I only shocked myself four times and blew the fuse that I plugged into maybe 5 or 6 times before I decided to really get to the bottom of what I was doing wrong. Back to Goodwill for me, I'm not giving up!

oo nooo! hahaha Take care please! :s :D You need an adapter to change the volts, or you can use a 12v battery pack and just run the motor with batteries. Stay safe and shock free haha Let me know the end result!!

Nice work! It was interesting to see all the discarded hair dryers. I live in Oklahoma in the USA. Generally, people are not very likely to try any kind of repair here. There is certainly a second hand market, but only for functional items. I like repairing stuff, and teach my kids that it is always worth at least trying to repair something before throwing it out. I'll show them your video, I think they'll like it a lot. We may have to make a wacky waving inflatable tube man of our own. Keep up the good work.

Oo that would be awesome! Share a photo or tag me anywhere once you make one! Would love to see your wacky waving inflatable tube man! Here in Cairo, only a certain segment or class do fix things, but others who are more privileged just buy another whenever anything breaks! I spent the last couple of years collecting some of these things and taking it apart, and most of the time it's just a loose wire, an easy fix.

Cairo is an enormous city so I am sure it runs the gamut! My oldest daughter (6 years old) loves taking stuff apart, she will get a real kick out of your stop motion videos. I am a carpenter, and I am pretty sure I have an old blower motor we can use for a wacky waving man. I'll post a picture when we get one built.

The reason the first motor didn't run smoothly is because it was drawing too much power from the adapter, causing the adapter to shut down. After a short pause the adapter restarts and the motor again draws too much power, causing the adapter to shut down. Hence the pulsing/jerking. PS: Zipper is awesome!

  • @dinaaamin

@@dinaaamin Thanks for responding to my comment! Speaking as someone in STEM, it's more important that someone with your talents and passion has real influence in industry than that you're a youtuber lol. There are some big youtube channels out there in the educational side of youtube that have real careers, so it's totally possible to find a balance! ChubbyEmu, MedLifeCrisis, and Practical Engineering come to mind, but there are plenty of others :) Just share projects with us when you have the chance. Even without a big audience, it's nice just to have your work out there.

@@fuehnix Thank you yes I am working on finding that balance, and it's working out so far, but slowly haha I work in advertising so I wouldn't say that's a good use of my talents haha I usually end up doing very non creative client work. But things are slowly changing, working like crazy this year to save up for a studio/workshop place, I post a lil bit more on instagram but couldn't find the time in 2020 for youtube. I have so many projects prepared for it and can't wait to share it here next year!!!

Hey dina, love your work. =) I thought about making one with my students for a decent price. Sadly there arent many dryers of one kind availible for my 20+ student so i thought about using an computer cooling fan. Now i got the problem that 1. i cant use electronics for the socket cause it would need a special certification and test phase of each product in the end with repeatingly checks which is just a hassle for me, the school and students as well so i thought about using a batterie. Got that but the power output is quit low which is still in an acceptable range but - next to the question, how you managed that your dancing man goes down. I tried similiar things but in the end he just "stands" all the time which cracks me a little. He wont deflat no matter what i do

  • @dinaaamin

Papaya Papa thanks! Well I’d guess that the fan is not the right type, these would work with blower fans, they look like hamster wheels. It can propel more volume of air and because the tube is open from one end, it causes a difference in air pressure so it falls at some point and this fluctuates so it dances. Search for diy air blowers, there are some tutorials for making your own fans, then all you will need are 12v motors and a battery :) hope this helps!

I made it out of plastic packaging that was shaped like a tube, I jus cut pieces and taped them in a tube to make the arms and taped it to the tube.
