HOW I LUNGE MY HORSES // v important part of flatwork guyys

Ойын-сауық

Just one thing I forgot to add, when you use a new training aid for the first time, I would recommend using it VERY loose first because it can take a horse a little while to figure them out so you don't want to put lots of pressure on them straight away ;)
ALSO: if you're using the vienna reins with twine instead of the actual training aid that you buy, make sure that both side have equal pressure, otherwise the horse will have their head turned to the side :)
Bungee: www.triequestrian.ie/cms/cms....
Vienna reins: what I use in the video is a makeshift one because they don't really sell them in ireland but a good alternative is just using bailing twine :) www.smartpakequine.com/pt/tor...

Chloe-Vanessa Smith when she was showing us how the tie downs or whatever they are called work the horse was trying to open her mouth but she could not because of how a figure eight bridel is so a figure eight nose band if it is to right then it is called abuse.

Alivia Elbourn I'd have to disagree. If she was in pain, she would be tense in her body but she isn't. She is actually quite relaxed. Some horses like to play with the bit on the lunge (mine does) as they are not being ridden there is no pressure from a rider. Thats why so many horses buck on the lunge, it's like playtime. Im certain if Holly was abusing Welbeck she wouldn't upload an entire video depicting it, and wouldn't keep it online for people to see. It also isn't a figure eight noseband, its a standard noseband with a flash attachment

Dakotah Stacy depends on the horse and the rider really. if a horse is sensitive and doesn’t act well with bits then yes hackamores are great! A rider should use a hackamore if there not light with there hands. Horses that do use bits are mainly ridden with leg and the reins r just there for extra guidance. My one gelding is a cutter and I use the bit on him but I mainly use leg and neck raining on him. My mare does barrels and I use the bridle to help guide her in the right position along with a lot of leg. As long as bits are used for the right purpose they are fine to use and won’t hurt the horse and same with spurs they aren’t meant kick the horse it’s for squeezing and its just a a little more pressure.

He was fine at 5 years old to 8, then i had to sell him and move overseas, later I miraculously found him and he has gotten such bad habits but its never too late to soften him up and relax him! Thank you . P.s Your voice is so soothing and you explain everything perfectly which for me is extremely helpful to keep the viewers attention. A MILLION RESPECT POINTS TO YOU.

I would totally understand why people are against training aids being used incorrectly but I think they're a really essential part of lunging. Of course you could lunge a horse without one but then they would just be exercising, not necessarily working properly - I don't know of any horse that would work themselves correctly without being asked to😂I really like your methods, very informative video :)

there a more ways to ask a horse to collect than tying strings and cords to the bit. i do think it can be a good tool, but it is not the only way. these cords do mainly teach a headset.

dont get me wrong im not disagreeing, im just saying. if you tie cords to their face that encourage the horse to strech it doest 100% mean that it is then also stepping under itself. for that you need to do a bit more. i do streching exercises too, tho im sitting ontop of the horse the idea is the same. but you'll quickly notice that you wont always feel a result just because the horse's head is down.

I didn't mean that using a lunging aid means they are stepping under, you should be pushing them forwards with a lunging whip which in turn, asks them to step under :) I don't really understand what you're trying to tell me? I'm not really sure how it relates to my comment 😂

I borrowed you lunging idea without the intent to give it back and I just got back inside and I am thoroughly impressed. I have have been using the aid that goes from bit, through the legs, over the back, back through the legs, and to the other side of the bit and my mare has been going well in it so I decided to spice it up with this and I just set them down at first and then raised 3, 4, then 5 and did it both directions and damn I love the results. Thank you so much for sharing!

Hi, just wanted to say thanks for the videos, I rescued an old riding school mare and though she's become a lot better, her spine is still sticking out. I watched your video on engagement, getting a coach friend to teach me that ( I am more knowledgeable on rehabilitating traumatized horses than physical training or dressage) and so I'm lunging her four days a week. Her back is already improved. Was hollow on either side of the spine. Thanks!

A cool system a lot of western riders use (when they don’t have a surcingle or anything of that sort) is they use a rope and attach to the bit similar to your second system for the “more established” horse, but it doesn’t involve the saddle or anything like that. It attached to the bit on one side, through front legs, over the back, back through the front legs to the other side of the bit. It works the same as your second system without needing a saddle

I have to admit I used to be dead against lunge aids but am coming round to them.....as you say anything in the wrong hands is wrong but if you know how to use them and are sympathetic then they're invaluable to working on the lunge. I love lunging it works so well for training a horse to carry themselves! Haha! I am lazy though and don't bother with a lunge whip for my older gelding because he's so responsive to the voice and I'm lazy!!

Lunging is so important! I used to half lease a horse with his owner and she wouldn't ride just lunge him on the days she had him but all she did was made him dull to the whip where you had to chase him around and she never advanced him in lunging so every time I rode he was always back to square one it was so frustrating. Also thanks for the lunge line going over and behind the ears, so many people just clip it to the inside of the bit and makes me uncomfortable to see it nearly get pulled through to that side when being lunged.

I lunge for a few reasons: minor warmup before riding, get some of the “fresh” out, get my horse’s mind/focus on me, and to see what “type” of horse I am dealing with today. Is my horse bucking? Spooking? Etc. I use some aids when lunging but not all the time.

I have a TB who, when lunged, gallops off, that’s the sort of horse she is as she’s moronic like that under saddle too, so she’s not scared of the whip, she will gallop off regardless and in your video you said most horses will get tired of galloping around and around - she doesn’t! She’s crazy and would keep galloping. I try to avoid lunging her as she’s strong and takes off, and pulls me everywhere trying to hold onto her or pulls the lunge lead out of my hand giving me rope burn if I’m not wearing gloves. Though, despite my moronic TB, I Love the video lol x

Wouldn't it accidentally put the horse in a false frame instead of allowing the horse to go round through its back and engage its hindquarters? I definitely would love to buy the bungee though. And maybe you could do a video on teaching a horse how to lunge? Regardless, i loved the video and i hope to see more! Good job :)

What's he's doing is super disrespectful! Horses communicate through body language, so first make sure you're in a proper position when lunging. Standing behind the shoulder, your body positioned with the shoulder nearest to your horses head turned in towards you horse. You should be facing his flank. It's hard to explain over text. When your horse stops, or comes in towards you, change your body language from passive to assertive. Get behind his rump to push him forward and give a loud "HEY" in a gruff, scolding voice. This is s lot easier to demonstrate than text out, but I hope this helps a bit.

I generally dislike "lunging aids" however I've come to find that they can have uses other than making a horse "ride pretty" with their head down. I use a pessoa for medical reasons, to stop my mare being lazy on her weak side and avoiding using her legs and back, so that she does use them and builds muscle properly and in the correct places. I think it's also worth mentioning that lunging can be very strenuous on the joints so particularly young horses, and old horses or horses with injuries (unless stated otherwise by your vet) should not be lunged/lunged excessively. Lunging can be extremely beneficial but like with anything you do with your horse if it's done in the wrong way it can be completely the opposite.

  • @mikaylanayback5421

    @mikaylanayback5421

I mean "riding pretty with their head down" is the proper way that a horse who has built proper muscle should carry themselves while being ridden. For a young horse, teaching them gently with training aids while lunging makes it easier to ask for the same when under saddle. It also helps a horse like Welbeck, who is much further along in her training, continue to build muscle properly even when she isn't being ridden. The horse then tracks under and lifts through their back which creates the correct frame both when being ridden and not being ridden.

+Kade Bould it completely depends on the horse and their level of fitness :) when welbeck is in full work, I usually lunge her for 15 minutes in each direction. I do 3 mins of walk to warm up and after that I alternate between canter, trot and walk because I find lots of translations are really helpful :) and you space the poles the same as normal trotting pokes except they’re on a bending line ☺️

If u want to know what join up is it is a method to earn ur horses trust and they will listen better and if u groom them and take a walk with them and let them graze it will give u tome to hang out with ur horse. Me and my horse we are besties. Ive had her since i was 4 or 8.. i dont know.. but good luck using these methods with ur horse

hi Holly, what is a good age to start lunging a horse ?we have a 2 yr old filly recently rescued, ( not due to miss handling etc just unwanted) my other half had a cob previously that recently passed away, his age was 36 which was fantastic so she knows her stuff but im trying to learn, specially dealing with a horse from such a young age, any advice for this process would be great.

I kindly suggest you reconsider your opinion on training aids. Your first horse is behind the verticle. Not tracking up. He can't hold collection for that long. You need to focus on building muscle not tying his head down.

I’m in Texas. I have a 7 year old, very well bred, OTTB mare. The owner discards mares regardless of breeding once they reach a certain age and sends them straight to Mexico for slaughter from Kentucky. She arrived starving and in very rough shape but thank God no injuries and a beautiful temperament despite what she’s been through. She was intercepted and has a second chance at life. I spent hours tracking down videos of her races because it tells me a great deal about what was expected of her. Oft they are “ewe necked” because many jockeys pull the head far up and backwards. Using the methods in the video may very well help because you need to work them in a way to rebuild the top line and correct what has been done to them in the course of racing and training to race.

I would really insist that your horse walks and only trots off when you ask them too. The pole exercise in this video will also really help with coordination. Lack of coordination is usually a lack of balance, when you're lunging, you're turning a lot tighter than you would you were riding so it really shows up any issues your horse might be having. Try making your circle as big as you can and then bring it in to normal size as she becomes more balanced :)

I'm no expert but I'm happy to try and help. I'd say just start with small things like having someone hold the whip still and allow your horse to walk up to that person and sniff it, when your horse shows some confidence you should advance slightly Like trying to walk up to your horse while holding the lunging whip etc and then try the desensitising tips in this video ( please note that I'm no expert just saying what worked for me ) good luck with your horse ❤️ and reminder: it may take a while for your horse to be confident with the lunge whip, things like this take time for some horses :)

Millie Simkins my horse has a bad relationship with the whip. But ive never really needed it anyway. I just use my voice. But if i wanted to start using The whip i would give him treats and at same time scratch /cuddle him with The whip. Use a small whip at first. If he backs away, take The whip further away from him. Looking at horsemanship videos might help :)

  • @HollyLenahanSJ

The other replies have good advice! I would definitely start with a small riding whip and rub him all over with it and reward when he shows no reaction. then move to a schooling whip and finally to a lunge whip. To try and get him slower on the lunge, try and 'lunge' him in a tiny circle in walk just around you and slowly relax the rope so he walks in a bigger circle. If he gets faster at any point, just bring the circle smaller and start loosening the rope again when he relaxes. Good luck!

  • @Zazzysylvester

Millie Simkins I would lunge without the whip first! And start with a dressage whip and not a long one. Hold it the wrong way so the long bit points away from you and the horse. If he gets used to seeing the whip often without getting stressed or hit it will get loads better. Remember that even after he gets used to the whip, he might still be scared if a new person approaches with a whip.

Just replied to someone else with the same question! :) if your horse doesn't listen to the lunging whip, its similar to if you have a horse that won't listen to your leg. Start with a small flick of the whip and put more and more pressure on until they move forward. Also try and keep the lunging to short, intensive bursts. Like if you just trot the horse around for 20 minutes, you're going to struggle to keep them going the whole time. Instead go for a couple of laps of a strong trot, then short walk, then short canter etc. If every lunging session is full of energy, they'll start to anticipate that when they go on the lunge, they've got to move forward. Also take into account if their feed has enough energy in it and if they're fit enough to do what you're asking :)

I did learn something new. If you would give how much time you spend in a lesson, and did you only start at a walk? That eye needed to be looked at. The horse isn’t being affectionate, she’s trying to tell you her eye is starting to get infected. She wants to rub it, and is trying to rub on you. Whom ever put that head stall on her, should have noticed that right away.

I disagree however I do respect your opinion. I know so many horses working without patent from being green, all different horses. Heavy on the mouth, great built in the front, in the back, honestly, very very different types. And with a little bit of willingness and hard systematic work they went through the training without ropes and showing them any way that we may want them to train muscles. The greatest tip is to make horse think by himself, to find this comfortable way to work, and then muscles grain best that they can. :) really, works. But it demand conscientiousness from us. And willingness as I already told before. Working with their head down, slowly getting their head higher, that’s the key to success. Sometimes it may last pretty long, but that’s most and only one effective and natural way to work with horse. Work in cooperation. Without forcing.

And. The neck is 20% of that, actually just a result of what horses back and butt does. So if your horse has problem with stride properly their legs under log, then the neck is your least problem to focus on.

I like your view on it. I typically use training aids when working with a horse than has been ridden inverted their whole life. a gelding I worked with was always ridden inverted and didnt know that he could use his body in the way I wanted him too (hind engaged and working over his back). I used a bungee with him and did a lot of pole work and it clicked for him. he finally was working properly and we slowly but surely worked on his topline.

*IMPORTANT* Don't ever ever ever lunge in leverage bits. Riders take notice - in this video, she's lunging in an elevator, but she's got contact on the snaffle ring of the bit. This is the ONLY TIME you should ever lunge in leverage - if there's a snaffle ring (elevator, gag not on the gag ring). Any bit that doesn't have a snaffle ring, do NOT LUNGE IN IT. Just wanted to point this out, showing what she did correctly and how it can be misconstrued. Also, do not lunge your horses in side reins UNTIL THEY ARE SOLIDLY WORKING WELL IN FRAME UNDER SADDLE. Until then, only work them in a chambon (the "bungee" this girl has that connects to the girth and encourages lengthening of the back) and when you're using any of these artificial training mechanisms, you MUST WARM UP BEFORE YOU PUT THEM ON! Always stretch the horse's neck and legs before every schooling session, especially lunging, and walk-trot-canter for a couple minutes on both sides. Don't lunge your horse for more than 30 minutes, so that you don't stress their joints, and DO NOT use lunging mechanisms while riding. Don't ever use side reins or chambons under saddle, they should only be used on the ground and lunging.
