I know someone who probably lives on less than you. She lives for free in the basement of a friend's home. I grew up in foster care and went into the military from high school, which was hard, but I was grateful for the opportunity for a good start and for the education and benefits I received. Maybe because I knew early on in my life what it was like to be homeless and not depend on someone to care for me, I worked and saved and made better decisions so that I would not end up in a similar situation. But I am always amazed at how this happens to educated people.

Thank you. We’re in a similar situation financially and in education except that my income is lower. I just am having trouble finding residence locations to visit since it’s not going to be an option where I am. I know there can be drastically different standards and here all seem to be are the worst or section 8 lists are closed indefinitely that’s to leadership. I am 76 and have reduced my possessions quite a bit after witnessing my neighbors’ being discarded. I will write some more to share about careers and how people can’t understand how I could be low income after such an education and would love to share more but not publicly.

I feel like I'm listening to myself talking. I'm in your exact situation except that I still have a $500 a month mortgage payment. I'd love to try to earn extra, to do marketing on my books and make more sales. But like you, if I earn more than just a little, I'll lose more than I'll gain. I'd need to make a lot to offset it. It's depressing. And I'd be depressed, but I refuse to fall into that. Instead, I thank God for what I do have and I have hope. (subsidized housing is out for now because I have a fur family (all seniors) that I love and am committed to caring for). I'm happy you're making this trap known. Love your videos.

Another life saver has been Homestead Exemption, for property tax relief. This after nearly losing my home to a tax sale several years ago. I applied for Medicaid once, but I didn't qualify because I had a little too much money at the time. Mindful frugality has always been a way of life for me. However, if I had not been a prepper, I wonder how I would manage at this point in life. Smaller local Thrift Stores, have been a godsend, no the bigger 'chain' type, where prices are often almost as much as things cost new. Thank goodness, I prepped not just food, but items necessary for everyday living too. Prepping mitigates inflation and shortages, better than any other way I know!

One reason I am considering Spain is that the properties are cheap and also I think I will be able to save about £100 a week out of my pension, which will be similar to yours, around £1,000 per month. I know prices have gone up recently, but food and utility bills are a lot cheaper than in the UK, and in the UK I would struggle to have a nice quality of life as well as being able to afford to live by the sea. I hope that your vlog is helping you, I am also considering starting one when I move later in the year.

Earning more and losing your benefits and Section 8 status is a problem because I don't know about you, but here wait lists to get on Section 8 housing can be anywhere from 1 to even 7 years! I don't want to do anything to risk losing my benefits or paying more rent than I have to. Even if you made some money on YT one or two years, what happens if you can't keep the momentum going on your channel? It's like working, and being your own boss - and the dip in your income won't be replaced automatically by government benefits that next month, or perhaps even the next year. Are you able to take that risk? I'm too old (70) to risk losing the financial assistance programs I worked hard to get in place for when I need them. I have elderly siblings who live up North (I'm in Florida) and a son who lives here but is too busy to see me more than six or seven times a year and doesn't want to deal with "health" or difficult issues. I'm pretty much on my own as far as family goes.

there's a zillion people on the waiting list for section 8 where I live. I don't have any safety net. Not sure if what you are saying is just a dream for people like me. Glad you aren't suffering. I guess we all have to find our own way. I didn't realize a person could lose Medicaid. Better not ever lose any health benefits though. At least with Medicaid you don't have to pay for Medicare. it goes up every year. I'm on Social Security. I think I could earn money without problems but trying to get a job at my age, 76 is pretty much a long shot. Oh my, there are issues to deal with on both Social Security and Medicaid. Especially prices that keep going up and a fixed income that only goes up barely each year. My gosh what did people do when there wasn't Medicaid or Medicare, or any social programs.??!

If I didn't have my parents retirement home, I'd be in trouble. Paid off, no mortgage, basic expenses still average 750 a month, mostly from the property taxes. I get a small veteran's exemption from the state on the taxes but that's about it. I have been able to manage financially, but it's not what I would call "living". Retirement income does not keep up with private sector wages. When wages go up due to inflation, we're stuck with a modest 1 Jan COLA increase. I know many seniors that are struggling.

Power bills are slightly subsidized. Power expensive. $68aud a month for internet. I think everything is more expensive here than in the U.S. If I earn a full time wage , the rent would be $470aud a week, per week not month. Petrol is $2.20aud a litre . How does that compare to U.S. petrol?? I would need to work out the gallon price and calculate, but I think we pay more than you.

It has a cost, it is visible and obvious. Slowly it is being discussed in places like this but only the costs are being discussed not how did we get this social debt. Free love, was never free.

We had a refuge couple from Ukraine here, both got jobs in hospitality- He was a college professor teaching Veterinary Science, she was a dental person. None of their credentials transferred to the US, so they went to work in hospitality. Within a year they lost their subsidy, but if something went wrong in the year ahead & their income dropped they could come back on the program. A safety net was there to encourage them and lessen the stress.

That is an excellent option. I’ve considered Argentina because I learned the language from an Argentine & I’m familiar with the culture. Mar del Plata & Bahía Blanca are seaside communities & much lower rent than anywhere in the US. The thing I’ve always hear from locals, gringos are not very willing to learn Spanish. This leaves you isolated & not much of an adventure. People in Argentina are very friendly & will easily make friends, but again, language is key. Btw, a lot of people in Argentina speak English. Also, unlike the US, you must prove you’ll not be a burden on their government. (This is true of most foreign countries) You should also visit & visit more than once. Again this takes money. So, check each county &their rules for immigration in order to find a good fit. Again, love Argentina & its people. A great combination of old world Spain & Italy. When I meet a fellow Spanish speaker, I’m pegged as Argentino when I speak because my Spanish sounds a lot like Italian. Also, some great Rock music. Charly García Gustavo Cerati Luis Alberto Spinetta All great rockers Vamos Argentina Sin duda.
