How I Like To Rig And Troll Ribbonfish For Giant King Mackerel

One of the best baits bar none for competing in king mackerel tournaments is the ribbonfish. Also known as Atlantic Cutlessfish or just plain silver eel, learning the proper techniques for slow trolling these baits puts you on an even playing field with every other angler in the tournament, no matter how big their boat or how far they run.

I went up to south Carolina and did some king mackerel fishing off the pier. I rigged up a steel leader with 3 hooks into a silver eel about 4 ft under a balloon. I had numerous people ask me what are you doing??? Or tell me that I am not going to catch anything with that... I would tell them that I fish offshore off of dauphin island, Al and all I use are silver eel with a duster. It's nothing to catch 10 to 20 in a 4-5 hour span. Silver eel are like candy to them. They didn't believe me 😂😂😂. I have really good luck trolling with the current around the gas rigs. Depending on the current, I will use around an 8 ounce trolling weight and a Christmas tree colored duster. I usually put the boat just in gear. When one strikes, I often get a second while reeling the other line up.

That's a really good trick there. I always wondered if it would work off a stationary object. We have the Sunshine Skyway Pier down here across Tampa Bay and every spring and fall, the end of both the north and south pier are covered up with the live bait trolley rig crowd and some really big kings are caught. Always wondered if just drifting a ribbonfish away from the pier on an out going tide would draw strikes from kingfish. May have to try that. Best of luck to you !!!

@@SacredObsessionGuideService king mackerel are fun to catch. They are also easy to catch as well. Its funny how many people I see that just way over complicate it. My brother is one of them. I hear things like, I have this X brand super deep diving lure with special paints that reflect in certain lights. And it was on sale for 26.99 😂😂😂 For trolling, I use about a 65lb steel leader with a flat hook for the lip of the ribbon fish and two treble hooks down the side. I also have a king buster or duster at the first book. Sometimes I use a 6oz trolling weight. I put the boat just in gear and troll with the current around a gas rig... That reel starts singing usually within 15 minutes.
