How I Learned To Embrace My Stutter? | Quan Tran | TEDxYouth@WellspringSaigonSchool

Have you ever tried lifting a really heavy barbell, or maybe opening a jar of peanut butter but it wouldn’t budge? Do you remember the feeling of sheer frustration, the inundation of hopelessness as you tried harder and harder to accomplish that task, but to no avail? Well, ever since the second grade, Tom felt the exact same thing every time he opened his mouth to speak because he had a stutter. Even though it had devastated him to the core, hindered his many abilities, he has learned to not let it define who he is, instead, he has learned to embrace it as simply part of his life, as a special trait that only he had. In many ways, his stutter has taught him the true value of perseverance and ambition, which ultimately led him to be able to give a Tedx Talk and confront his biggest fear: public speaking. Tran Minh Quan is an extraordinary student with a magnificent academic profile. He was successful in obtaining a 30% Scholarship to an Oxford, London summer camp (Immerse Education) and 70% Scholarship to RISS. In addition, he received the distinction of being named Student of the Vietnamese and International Programs for the academic year 2021-2022. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Wow. As a fellow Vietnamese and someone who stutters and we both have the same Vietnamese first name, I know that I will come back to this video many times when I feel down due to my stutter. I can relate to all the things that you've mentioned when it comes to stuttering. It has caused me great suffering and although I try so hard not to care about it, I can't erase my fear of being judged (which I think is the root of it all). But I will try over and over to embrace this stutter. I've never thought my stutter as a gift so this video has really touched me. Thank you Quan!
