I used to be a sweet latte guy, but then had a similar experience with cold brews. Over time I got less and less sweet foam, so I got accustomed to the cold brew taste. They’re just so smooth and don’t feel as hateful as black espresso.

Heheh I like how you described it. Black espresso really does taste like HATE. Cold brews are sooo mellow. Works with teas that are susceptible to bitterness too! It's the hot water that awakens bitter compounds so brewing in cold water circumvents that!

@@happybunnyntx Yeah, I much prefer the taste of cold brews than black coffees, but ironically cold brews have cleansed my palette to the point where I enjoy a simple black coffee. Obviously I have a preference for the smoothness of cold brew, but it’s interesting how it prepared me for other “black” drinks

Coffee if brewed right doesn't have those bad taste qualities (burnt, sour, bitter, astringent, pungent). What makes it addicting is the taste notes that hit when you sip and that lingering after taste that goes on for minutes even hours.

One of the ways for me is to treat it like dark chocolate. Let it slowly enter your mouth (slurp for extra flavors if you're alone), let it sit there for at least three seconds and slowly swallow not all but in small amounts. That feels insanely extra but doing that and variants of that helps to really appreciate the flavor compared to if i just swallowed it instantly my mouth would die. Also could try light-roast if you don't like that bitterness to it

I got into black coffees through iced black Americanos because ommmg espressos flavour is fricking magnificent when there's a bit of ice and water to dilute, it has these notes that u can't enjoy when u drink it with sugar or dairy. That's not to say I don't enjoy it with those things as well but seriously trying black iced Americanos is what altered my brain chemistry and did it for me so I'm now able to enjoy coffee black

  • @cherrypitbliss

Started because I got interested in making coffee! From the kind of roast you do, where the beans come from, how fresh they are, how precisely you brew, freshly grinding the beans... the ritual of it became really soothing! Milk, creamer, and sugar easily mask poorly made coffee, so I started drinking it black to see how I was doing and what "notes" I could taste bean to bean. It has been a fun hobby! I still drink dark roast and condensed milk in Vietnamese Coffee, but these days I always drink light and medium roasts black.

one thing i've been doing this past month, that works extremely well even on a cheap coarsely grounded instant coffee that i actually hated, was to splash a bit of cold water enough to cover the grounds and stir for awhile. once it looks like it's fully mixed in all together, i add the hot water. it actually smells more wonderful and far less bitter, with some hints of dark chocolate to the aroma, something i never smelled off this brand before. while i still take mine with sweetened condensed milk, it clearly tastes a whole lot less bitter this way. i'm actually tempted to try it black to give it a try.

i started with the most difficult task : brew it cold with ice cubes. now the problem is, getting the right ratio is hard and when you find the perfect recipe, its so satisfying. i learned two methods of how to make it. first one is cold brew. good for robusta beans and you can serve it with little bit of sugar (10gram). another method i use to brew is japanese iced drip. good for arabica beans with acidity and sweetness. if you do it right you don't even need sugar at all and the taste is rich and balanced between sweet, sour, and bitter. i'm speaking as barista not customer perspective.

I’d chose soy milk at Starbucks (cause back then that was the ONLY option) and was able to enjoy coffee from there freely but all the other places didn’t offer lactose free options. And since I was working and going to school I needed caffeine so I just drank it black for the caffeine, I never liked it cause it tasted sour to me. Thank goodness for the rise in pant based milk. And I rejoiced when Dunkin made almond milk an option some years later 😊

I just started drinking my black coffee right away. It's maybe because I already have a diverse pallete so I didn't have to train it like the teacher but hey whatever is necessary. Haha

Cold brew is the way to go. It's so much more smoother than plain black coffee and personally is nicer on my stomach.

As a barista I think cutting it with cream is totally fine, the only time I'd say drinking it black is essential or worthwhile is when it's a high quality or single origin coffee bean brewed and roasted by professionals.

I never thought I'd be able to drink black coffee. A few months ago, on the first day my new job, they took me to meet the CEO of the company (who was my boss 😳). I was super nervous and he offered me tea or coffee. I said coffee, expecting the typical sweet milky coffee that we get in my country. Instead, a cup of black coffee arrived 💀 I was already nervous af, I definitely did not want to drink it in front of the CEO and possibly gag from the bitterness. But I took a sip to look polite and it was actually super good, not bitter and very mild. I never realized how much the type of coffee bean and roast etc makes a difference until that day. I still don't drink it regularly tho, I love my milk so much. I do substitute sugar for honey alot tho, I think it's super good that way

Why would anyone force or train themselves to like something? Just stick to what you want, if you don't like black coffee because it's too bitter or you just prefer sweeter drinks that's cool as well

I've been drinking black coffee but with sugar since I was around 11. I only started drinking pure black coffee around last year (I was 20 then) and it was surprisingly easy for me. Partly because I have been cutting sugar from my tea in an effort to reduce my sugar intake. So my taste buds were sort of accustomed to the bitterness by then. I still like my latte and all but I usually go for black coffee when trying a new roast to get a better grasp on the flavor profile of that particular roast.

The best way to enjoy black coffee is to reduce the coffee grinds. I made super strong coffee which I compensated with sugar and cream. The only way I could enjoy the same coffee was to add more water. Or reduce the Amt of coffee. I used to make americano double shot. I went with a single and was much easier to drink. Then just repeat.

Im a barista and I only really drink black if it is an iced americano or a pour over. I think coffee lacks the body it needs for the flavour it has.. Tea is fine because it should be light and floral, but coffee is more deep and developed and I think black coffee is often too watery

That's the same way I became used to drinking black coffee. I started drinking coffee in college. Mostly cream and sugar with a splash of coffee, lol. Nowadays if I drink coffee anyway besides black, it tastes like I'm drinking a coffee milkshake.
