I've been teaching myself how to do mental math for the last year. Here's how I approached 33x21. (You need to add 3*2, and 3*1, but since with both you are multiplying by 3 I find it faster to do 3(2+1), for something like 47*27 I would do 6*7, instead of 4*7 and add 2*7. It's a small trick but makes it slightly faster. The trick I used though was I did 33*20+33, so 660+33. You can use the second trick pretty much anytime one of the numbers ìs a multiple of 10±2, like 82*76, 80*76+152 is easier for me. My learning progression: -Learned the first 100 square numbers (practed calculating them instead of rote memory to improve multiple skills) Tried to do 2 digit multiplication and realised I didn't know my times-tables. So I learned and practiced my times-tables up to 9x9. Then every day on my way to work I would practice 2 digit multiplication by generating lists of random numbers from 11-99. Things I wanna do: learn times tables up to 25*25 (or at least up to 18*18 because one of the previous mentioned tips doesn't work for something like 77*79 if I can't instantly do 16*7. I want to be able to quickly calculate squares of 3 digit numbers. I know a lot of shortcuts and quicker ways of doing so but I need to practice it. Ex: 121²=10000+200(21)+21²=14641, with similar rules for 200-999. I also wanna practice 2 digit multiplication using difference of squares. Like 46*86=66²-20²=4356-400-3956 (super easy if you can recall 66² within a second)

@@devb.9250 oh, it's just a very small mental shortcut. you gain more of these shortcuts the more you practice. take 27*47, you have you add 2(7) and 4(7) right? 2(7) = 14, 4(7) = 28. then add them together. 14+28 = 42 the shortcut is to recognise 2(7) + 4(7) = 6(7), which to me is practically instantaneous. so I just do 6(7) = 42, which is 1 operation instead of 3. in full. 27*47 6(7) = 42, 42*10 = 420 (this step is done practically instantly) (My literal internal monologue is: "6, 7, 420" ) 20(40) = 800 800 + 420 = 1220 (My literal internal monologue: "2, 4, 800... 800 and 420 is 1220") 7*7 = 49 27*47 = 1220 + 49 (Internal monologue: 1220 plus 49, 1269 (although with 27*47, if you know your square numbers really really well then it's waaaay easier to see 27*47 as just 38^2-100 which is 1369-100=1269)

You can actually do 3x3 multiplication by using the same 2x2 multiplication trick and it's faster than drawing lines method. You can also do 3x2 multiplication in the same way by just putting 0 in front of 2 digit number to make it a pseudo 3 digit number. In the same manner you can do any n x n digit multiplications and it will take you less than 10 seconds with good practice. That's how I learned to do multiplication very quickly in my school days. Although I no longer use it in my engineering classes since calculators are permitted😅. So overall really cool trick for everyone to learn.

Mathematician here. I love your enthusiasm especially on this topic. It's hilariously amazing how you enjoyed the mult method at 0:25 considering it's exactly the way we multiply polynomials. If a=b=3, and c=2, d=1 Then 33x21 has the form (10a+b)(10c+d) =100ac + 10(ad+bc) + bd Plug in the numbers, it's exactly as you did it ^_^ At 2:39, instead of counting the crossings, multiply the number of lines going one way by the number of lines going the other way. 3 lines crossing 4 lines means 3x4=12 crossings in that part. 3:28 try this: mentally do 48+34=82 to get the first two digits. Then 2+3=5 to get the last digit. 82 and 5 ----> 825 If the 5 number had actually been higher than 9, the 10s digit would have carried over. 4:06 not all numbers are divisible by 3. Some will have a remainder of 1 or 2. Here's a fun way to tell if it will divide evenly (by 3): Add up the individual digits. If the sum is divisible by 3, then so is your starting number! If the sum is too big for you to decide, repeat the rule for that sum. Your new sum will be smaller and easier to decide on. If sum2 is divisible by 3, then so is sum1 and therefore the starting number is as well! There are more than a few curious things to appreciate in mathematics when you reach a high enough skill level so as not to be bogged down by sheer arithmetic.

If he can do it, I can too
I've been teaching myself how to do mental math for the last year.

You can do these tricks faster than the time it takes to enter into a calculator. But its not really about speed more about seeing how numbers work. If kids want to learn some of these tricks they will be learning algebra without realising it.
