How I Keep My Goats in WITHOUT a Fence

Goats are notorious for getting out of a fence so how in the world do I keep my goats in without a fence? Well it's pretty simple on one side of my property. Goats do not and will not cross water.

My 10 goats cross creeks all day long. I've had them cross water chest high, and moving hard enough to send them downstream. Not happy about it, but they will do it in a heartbeat if something they want is on the other side.

Prey animals that evolved in arid areas can be instinctively nervous about water, and I think it is because water sources are scarce in such areas and they have to drink, so predators know this and try to ambush them when they go to drink. Animals evolved in wet climates aren't nervous about this because with water abundant, predators don't get any advantage to hunt by water. Goats, donkeys, horses like Arabs, all tend to be very wary about water in my experience. Other breeds of horses vary, the draft breeds aren't concerned in my experience and they evolved in wet climates. I don't have much experience with sheep, but I suspect they would vary on this much like horses, depending on ancestry in wet or dry climates.

I've noticed our goats don't want to cross water, even on a bridge. Your tests of trying to lure or drag them in was fascinating. Now I know I don't need fencing at the back of our property because of the drain.

Apparently these goats are the exception, because we've had goats going on 10 years, and yes they Do hate getting in water and will tiptoe if need be, but they will if determined enough and ours will come feed time. It's not 100% guarantee they won't cross, it just depends on how well you know your goats. Another note, the mote won't keep out predators, but our livestock guardian dogs will ! 😎

Nice video. We have a creek bordering two sides of our 14 acres and a small pond. They always go to the water buckets to drink. Silly things. We have 19 goats and whenever I step outside, they come running, or, if they don't see me, I can just call them like I call the dogs and cats, and them come running. So funny. I love them all. When I sit on the porch they come up and hang out with me. So do the chickens. You gotta love the country life. So natural and good.

That’s a great demo. I have a few acres on tropical rainforest...no creek or pond...but if I build a good slightly elevated goat shelter pole barn type thing, and have a wagon wheel pasture setup..I’m thinking they may no be really wanting to jump fences as long as they look forward to a dependable tasty treat in shelter every evening. I.e. are they trainable like dogs or pigs...anyone?

  • @jchny00

Goats hate water pools, ponds or rain period. Mine won't leave the stalls even with a drizzle. Cows, mine are all out there on pasture even with snow and ice. Goats do well trained to electric fence also. I start them on a small fenced pasture with at least 3 wires. They learn that hot wire fast and we don't have escapees.

a hundred yrs ago i had a bf there was goats were he worked. I saw the babies and said how cute they were. next thing i knew he brought one home, my home. Im zoned ag and its legal for me to have critters here. Blly Bob the goat grew up, not so cute anymore. mortorcycle friends of mine would put on their helmets and do some head butting with him. I couldn't even go out the back door without a broom to beat him away. Wokeup one morning and there was 10 tennis shoes in my back yard all different kinds. He'd been visiting the neighbors and stole shoes off their porches and leaving his calling card, droppings. couldn't keep him in the fence. He had springs on his feet, jumped right over it, Boing. Well Bf's come and go as this one did. Had my cousin come over we hog tied that critter got him in the backseat of my mother's Mercury Grand Marquis. Took him to the new place ex-Bf was living and tied Billy Bob to the trailer hitch of his truck. there was a good sized hedge next to the truck. Next morning so I was told, the hedge was gone, Billy was found standing on the cab of his truck. He gave Billy to some fiilipinos they had a goat roast. Poor Billy Bob. I've lead a very colorful life.

Our goats will go in and across our creek and in and out of the source spring. They love the lush growth and will find a way. But their hooves are too small and preclude swimming (I’m sure there’s an exception out there...’Bill the Wonder Goat’.... but that’s just MY goats! What they are skittish about are coyote and wolves that come to call on occasion. That’s why we have the herding dog AND the Irish Wolfhound.

I didnt know they avoided water! I dont remember my goat having a problem with the creek. There was one place where we had to cross but it was no more than a fee inches deep and 4' wide. She just jumped it! Lol. She did like climbing this steep hillside dad would excavate for gravel. Even when we had ice and snow on it, she was happy! So the moral of the story is build a moat around the goat pen!

Interesting I never did know that goats didn't like water. And I was raised with one. I guess an ordinary goat I don't know what kind it was we milked it for my sister when she's a baby she had to drink it's milk she's allergic to everything else. Does it get you humid there where you live?

This only worked for a couple of years with my larger goats. Now they tolerate the water and jump. :/

My family raised pygmies on lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. Those goats would run across creeks, jump any water. What's the difference of pygmies and kikos? Are they a better meat? How much price difference for your goats? I am a regular subscriber but I think I keep missing when you've said it. Sorry.

Kikos are a very hardy meat goat and much larger than pygmies.

Goat are prone to feet-hoof rot due to humidity, so,,, they do not like to get their feet wet.

I don't have to deworm Kikos very often at all. I usually rotate through a few options that my local feed stores sell, but mostly safeguard.

So you have a creek all the way around your property? How practical is that? Also, a dog will cross that creek and attack your goats so what good is that?
