I'm a groomer (4 yrs) and I think you did totally fine! Obviously shears are better than scissors but you were careful so all's well! I think I'm gonna steal that table dryer idea from you for home because I have a dryer demon who might be okay with that one...we'll see

Groomer here!! I think you did a great job for at home grooming! One brush I'd recommend is the chris christiansen coral slicker brushes. They are fantastic for getting out under coats and tangles. I know you mentioned your shears a broken too on amazon the purple dragon shears are pretty great especially for what you're doing. You can get a set of 4 which come with straights, curves, and thinners for like 40$. Straights around her paw and thinners on top! Also great advice brushing your dog should be an every day thing and nails weekly with a dremel!

Not at all! Luckily I use natural/gentle cleansers so her skin doesn’t get dry. Sometimes I’ll just use conditioner and no shampoo. I think her raw diet really helps keep her skin and coat in nice condition too :)

  • @facecheese123

I used to be a dog groomer, that “under coat rake” is actually meant for matted fur, bin it, it cuts the coat and completely destroys it, and that’s probably why your collie is curly. I also would recommend bathing weekly for dogs, they need their oils for a healthy coat and skin, regardless of their diet. I don’t believe all dogs need to brushed daily, if you want to that’s fine, I only really brush my dogs when they’re moulting otherwise I leave them (they are short coated dogs so no need to brush to prevent knots). With that dryer be super careful not to have it too close to the skin when it’s hot as you can super easily burn you dog. Also when drying the dog make sure she is completely dry and that eliminates wet dog smell

My friend envied me because my border loves her grooming. I told her to try using the rake and metal undercoat grooming tool on her own head and yank it through any tangles while she was at it! If it hurts you - then it hurts your dog too. Why use painful techniques and have your dog half throttled while your at it. No wonder this poor creature hates her bathing and grooming. I use plastic tipped and pure plastic equipment. I let her sit and lay freely and chat away. We stop and cuddle and even hand play between times. Feed her the odd treat too when she is especially calm and good when having to stand. Bathing and grooming are not her favourite things in life but she doesn't hate it either. Time the dog grooming profession dragged itself into the 21st century.

You shouldn't need to brush your dog more than 2 or 3 times a week, especially a shorter fur dog that won't get matted. Brushing a lot can cause irritated skin and damaged fur. Same with weekly baths, it is not necessary to bathe your dog weekly unless it is actually dirty. If you are using proper shampoo and or conditioner it should be fine but most of your audience probably won't buy quality conditioner which is essential if you are bathing so often. For example, my Husky mix has a double coat that won't ever get matted, sheds twice a year and is generally a clean dog-she gets bathed once a year or so. My Pomeranian who is not as clean and prone to tangles and matting, gets a bath once a month and brushed 3 times a week. Nails at least once a week.

I’ve found that brushing daily really helps her hair growth. And I agree, the products really make a difference. Cheap shampoos and conditioners strip the cost super harshly. We don’t do weekly baths unless it’s show season and usually she needs them because she’s covered in mud from muddy fields. Sometimes we just use conditioner though and skip out on shampoo if she’s not dirty.

@@MaddieSmith I just think it's important to include some of that info because lots of people just want to look up to you (and other youtubers) which is great but only if they know the facts. So brushing daily with tools that wont harm the coat or the skin and weekly baths only if you use quality shampoo and conditioner. The info you do have in there is great though btw.

Did the retired groomer who shared a tip about not using the hip noose delete their own comment? I really hope that’s the case and that it wasn’t deleted by you. Why not be open to constructive criticism? There was even a request for tips at the end of the video! I really like your channel I was just a bit shocked to see that! A little disappointed. Removing mean or nasty comments is understandable... but that comment was not rude at all.

She must’ve deleted it, I didn’t see it and I don’t see it in the “marked as spam” folder either. I’m definitely curious what she said, would you paraphrase? (Also I don’t delete any comments on my channel unless they’re offering blatantly wrong/harmful care tips to other people. ☺️)

Maddie Smith oh phew! I always thought highly of you for being open to new ideas. Thank you for clearing that up. They mentioned how they didn’t use the hip noose because it was uncomfortable for the dog if they tried to sit down with it on, putting too much pressure on that region. I think it was more of “keep in mind” or “be aware” kind of comment just in case those watching tried to use the hip noose without experience. Ellie stood so nicely and was not trying to sit down so it wouldn’t be a issue in your case! But I felt it was a good comment for your viewers to just keep in mind.

Thanks for passing it on! Ellie does stand very well on the table and the reason I use it is because sometimes she’ll shift back and forth while doing her toenails, but of course if it was going to cause her potential injury or there was issues I’d want someone to tell me! I’m always open to criticism, I think animal lovers have to be if they want the best for their pet!

Maddie Smith I have a malamute/husky and although I have not yet used the “furminator” on her coat I do have one that was given to me. After you had mentioned how harmful it can be on a coat like hers I did some research and will be purchasing a new undercoat rake. So thank you for sharing your insight on that!
