    Indirect warping is my favorite. I made a cross holder so the warp sits on the table and I don’t hold it in my hand while threading the heddle. (Google ‘warping cross holder’ for various designs that are easy to replicate with scrap wood and glue. Or use two rulers or paint sticks as lease sticks.) I tape the holder/sticks to the table so it can’t fall off. I take the heddle off the loom while threading so it’s closer to me. The heddle goes in a holder as well, google ‘reed & lease stick holder’ for ideas. Prices are ridiculous, it’s easy to make with a dowel and scrap wood if you have a small handsaw and wood glue. Or set up 4 big heavy bean cans and sit the heddle between those, whatever works. Now the warp and heddle are on the table right in front of me, no leaning or stretching or straining to see the holes. While threading I pause every few inches to tie the threads behind the heddle into a temporary bundle with a slip knot so they can’t accidentally be pulled back through the heddle.

    This looks like it might be a good idea for someone who has mobility issues. I'm having problems with my back and standing and walking can be really painful. This seems as if it might easier to wind the warp and then sit and thread the slots rather than walking back and forth and bending to do the threading. I don't have a warping board but can find alternatives. I'm going to give this a try, I think, with a smaller project. After I watch this again!

However, I found “very dangerous”, with potential of many accidents, when you cut the ends in your hand and begin the threading. Thank you for this informative video. I have never used indirect warping on my rigid heddle so far, but I have a pattern for a shawl which requires this method, so I'm so glad I found your tutorial. I normally use the lash on method to attach the yarn to my apron rod. Is it possible to use this method for the initial tying on to the back beam? I guess the threads would have to be held tight somehow to do this (or maybe not) but I'm not sure if it is possible.

  • @Curly_n_Yarny

    @Curly_n_Yarny

    2 жыл бұрын

    That's a really good question! Personally, I have not tried it. Still, I'm really curious and I'm surely going to try it one day! I'm thinking about how I would do it. So, I'm thinking that once the threads are threaded in the heddle, we could make little bundles and make knots at the end. Then, I think it would be possible to pass the cord in the bundles for the lashing on. I feel like this step would be possible without having tension on the threads. After that, we would be ready to roll the warp onto the back beam. This is when we would need to hold the threads with a bit of tension and we could adjust the lash on if needed. Those are only thoeries, but I will test them out! Please let me know if you ever try it 😁

  • @ingridbassett4828

    That's a very good question. And sadly, I do not have the answer because I have never tried it. My advice would be to try it with a test warp. It doesn't have to be long, nor wide, just big enough to test it out. Then you would know if it can work and make adjustements if necessary for your next "real" warp.

  • @Curly_n_Yarny

    @Curly_n_Yarny

    When I do a direct warp, I usually plan 50cm (20") of waste yarn. When I do an indirect warp like this video, I like to plan for a little bit more. This is because I make knots on the back apron and this takes up more yarn. To be completely safe, I often plan for 60cm (24").

  • @Curly_n_Yarny

    @Curly_n_Yarny

    10 ай бұрын

    I absolutely love my rigid heddle loom ❤️ I don't have the perfect answer for you. I think that the best loom varies from one person to another. Some start with rigid heddle looms, some with multishaft looms. Here's a few things to consider in order to help with your decision on which loom to buy: -What do you want to make? If you want to make wide things, a wider loom would be a good option. If not, then you don't need to spend the extra money on a big loom. Myself, I knew that I wanted to make baby blankets, so this is why I decided on the 32". -What is your budget? The bigger the loom, the more expensive. And this goes for the loom itself, but also for the accessories -What space do you have? Again, the bigger the loom, the more space it needs! -How much time do you have for weaving? Rigid heddle looms are very easy and quick to set up and you can get weaving faster. With multishaft looms, it can take almost a whole day, just for the warping! I hope this helps you! Let me know if you have any other questions 😊

Rigid heddle looms are real looms that create real pieces of fabrics, just like any other looms. They just look different that what some people might think a loom should look like. I hope that this comment will not take away the fun that you will have with your new loom. I wish you tons of great projects and discoveries! And let me know if you have any other questions!

    I am so sorry but I am having issues understanding you. I don't think it is the accent but the mic you are using makes a hollow sound and I can hear you but not understand the words. Plus you may need to speak a little slower. I really wanted to watch this warping and am so sorry to complain.

    I'm so sorry that you are having difficulties hearing me. You are right, my mic is not the best quality. I have been meaning to invest in a new mic for a while and I have always put it off. Your comment is giving me the little kick that I needed to actually do it. On another note, I notice that some devices deliver better sounds than others. Maybe you can try watching the video on another device and see if it's better 😊

    @@Curly_n_Yarny I find the sound itself fine but the background noise is loud. It's easy to get rid off in postprocessing though, I use Noise Gate under Filters in Audacity. Thank you for the video, definitely made sense and it seems that you are the first left-handed weaving teacher I see on KZread :)
