how I got into ~mcmaster health sci~ part 1//stats, ec's, advice

Hiya!
Thank you for all your kind comments on my university decision reactions video! After many requests, I have decided to create a series dedicated to my McMaster Health Science application process. In this part, I go over all my grades, extracurriculars, awards, and general advice for incoming grade 12's. In my next video, I will be delving deeper into how I approached the very peculiar supplementary application and general advice on writing a good university essay. If you have any questions, please feel free to comment down below or reach out to me on my Instagram! Please subscribe to my channel and give this video a thumbs up! Thank you!!:)
See ya!

All u have to do is not to stress and acc understand the material you’re learning. Doesn’t matter how many good notes u take, if u don’t understand it they’ll be useless. AND stress is another key factor. Stressing while test taking will acc ruin ur chances on getting any 100s. Control your breathing and you’ll be fine. Another helpful tip is to listen to calming (study music) while studying or doing homework so u make sure to stay stressfree during tests. ANDDDD if u don’t get something always ask a teacher as many questions as u have until u have a solid foundation. Watch KZread videos, do anything so u make sure u understand!!! Best of luck to youuuu!

I wish I had done more extracurriculars, I moved to Canada from China to go to high school and honestly at the beginning I had no idea how important extracurriculars would be and how much they matter in applying for universities. I got involved in a few clubs but never paid much attention to them. Now I'm in grade 11 and realizing how much more I would have done if I knew in grade 9 and 10 how the Canadian University Application process worked. Blaming myself for not doing enough research and thinking ahead. :(

I graduated from high school in 2015 but I absolutely agree about English. I worked so hard to only get an 84 back then. And it must be worse now since grade inflation is so high + cheating back when there were online classes. Science is a BIT more fair because it’s based on the lecture and textbook content. Easier if you have past tests. But there was always that one teacher who put in more difficult questions. Some teachers also offered retests or extra credit while others didn’t. I’ve heard of students who got a high average in English like 100% and clearly they sucked up or charmed the teacher.

I am so screwed! There goes all my dreams cause no one was their to guide me. I am going into grade 12. I had a 90 average in Grade 11. I have literally NO EC’s. I have a part time job and thats it. Plus 40 hours of volunteer experience at children craft centres and camp. And additional 24 hours at a studio. Theres no hopes, I have no awards....nothing. Sometimes I get very jealous of others success , but at the end its your hard work. Congrats, however, how in the world did you manage your time? Like for real! I don’t want to sound like a downer, but is study and driving yourself to these admissions is all you did? Or did you have fun in a social life, if not that’s absolutely fine, but if you did! HOW? Like how can manage all of this!

Your grades are much more important than your ECs! If you have a mid 90 average in grade 12 then I'd say your set. There are also many other undergrad programs that you can apply to for health sciences. Don't give up! You got this. Success is relative, so don't delve so much into other people's successes. Good luck :)

Momina Butt Thanks, sounded motivating! Is just others success gets to me when I can’t share the same marks as them! At the same time its my lack in efforts too! I could’ve easily scored a 93 average this year, but didn’t bother putting in the efforts instead complained of others achieving the marks I wanted. Most of all, the self satisfication overdrive me. I was always like “I didn’t try” when I got a low mark, in reality with that being said, I truly didn’t however, I never got to know what marks I could’ve got if I tried. And most of all, I could know where to improve. I dug my own hole to bury myself!

IB also allows you to have opportunities where you develop great life and academic skills (work management, networking, research). As I said, I’m not too knowledged on the AP curriculum, but from what I experienced, I really enjoyed IB.
