How I got Grand Champion with 0 mechanics

Ойындар

It's a common debate in the Rocket League community. Can you get Grand Champion with 0 mechanics? I personally think, yes. And today I end this debate once and for all by proving it myself. This is how I got Grand Champion with no mechanics.

People often debate whether or not mechanics are important for ranking up in Rocket League. In my opinion, mechanics are not nearly as important as you think if you're trying to climb the ranks. Even some experienced coaches overvalue how important mechanics are. Obviously, you need some mechanical ability to an extent, but people often estimate that they need way more than they actually do. In this video, I got Grand Champion with a piano as my controller to prove that mechanics aren't actually that important.

That's the think with 3v3 though, there will always be an element of how well your teammates play. You can minimise the effect of bad and good teammates. I think it still shows that having good gamesense is the most important aspect of the game though, even the best teammates won't be able to win every game if you're in bad positions.

This debate really comes down to your definition of “mechanics”. You have to remember that when you do a challenge like this, all you’ve lost is your muscle memory. Your read of the ball’s trajectory and physics that you’ve gained after thousands of hours is still there. I’m sure you’d agree that without that, you definitely wouldn’t have completed this challenge. So it depends - do you consider being able to read the ball a “mechanic”? A lot of people would say no, but I’d argue that in order to have the ability to read the ball well, you would need to have practiced mechanics that require that skill, such as double taps, shooting, saves, etc. So while reading the ball may not, in itself, be a mechanic, it is learned through training things that actually are mechanics, despite those mechanics themselves not necessarily being needed to get to GC.

I agree with the sentiment and the statement that you can get high ranked without mechs, but I think the way you went about it doesn't do the best job showing/proving that for 2 main points imo: 1. teaming up with someone who you admit is both under-ranked, and better mechanically than the other players -- kinda devalues your point. 2. 3s is a gamemode where one player's mistakes have the least amount of impact -- so trying for GC (or whatever rank) in 1s would be more impressive not to say this isn't impressive or to say that the statement is not true -- just that it could've been proved better imo much love

flake's gameplay is way more mechanical than wayton imo. he may only be going for simple stuff but he mastered them. a plat can't pull off powerslide cuts nearly as well or as consistently as him. same for shooting. while his content is very interesting and inspiring, the fact that he does the series on controller (on which he has thousands of hour on) doesn't sound fair to me despite the very limited amount of mechanics he does. here what wayton meant by "no mechanics" wasn't "going for simple stuff only" but rather "having very poor mechanics and dealing with it". and i think it should be the real definition of "no mechs"

@@swagie_ Yeah, that's the whole debate. Eitherway, Wayton with the keyboard managed to pull an air dribble and a double tap, and several shots with power and placement, so that's very far from 0 mechanics. They weren't clean at all, but certainly enough to beat a champ-level goalie. Plus he has his GC2 level mindset on top of that. Although Flakes has perfect car control, I think the whole purpose of his series is to show that understanding the game, staying grounded, and most of the time not going for the ball is way better than grinding mechanics like flip resets and such for hundreds of hours. Most of his goals were just driving the ball inside the net, after waiting for the opponent to hard committing on a challenge.

half agreed, he was technically playing with plat mechanics. basically proved even if you have trash mechanics, you can still get gc with how well you USE those mechanics. for flakes though, i really agree on his playstyle. dude just makes champs rage by not hitting the ball. Although im not sure if his playstyle works in 3s because it'll be a lot harder since people would be challenging alot more since its 3-man games. It'd be alot difficult to outplay them, you'd need the help of your teammate.

Nobody can play with 0 mechanics. When people say that, it's usually a hyperbole. Also, comparing Flakes with Wayton is wrong. Flakes was trying to demonstrate that you don't need "fancy" mechanics like double flip resets or wall dashes or insane air control. His point was that if you can just master the very basics of mechanics, you'd rank up. Wayton's way is a true reflection of how an average player approaches a game. Anybody over plat can hit a few "fancy" mechanic every now and then, but usually lack control or consistency. Both proved their points masterfully.

Great work Wayton! I see that, in the case of playing 3s, having tm8s that you can SYNC with is the key to FAST rank ups, especially in the D3 to C3 range. No doubt I think you could grind up to GC solo queing but would take way longer, but in that point in 3s isnt it more like the TEAM is ranked at GC (maybe higher levels this is more applicable) more than the individual player? Unless you get into playing 2s and 1s where individual game sense and mechanics has much more responsibility to reach those higher ranks. Game sense is fundamental and generally more useful than than higher level mechanics in 3s as you demonstrated you had the game sense to read players, ball bounces, and play around whatever random tm8s were doing.

You knew what to do mechanically with your car. You may have been lost when inconsistency and fails put you in the wrong spots but there are many situations where lower ranks get lost anyways because they just don't know how to for example turn their car when upside down. Therefore I would argue that you had a kind of mechanical advantage over lower ranks, a part of having gc mechanics transferred to your piano gameplay. How big of an influence do you think that had?

I love the idea, but there is a big limit. Yourself. You are already an insanely good player. You KNOW the mechanics, with or without a bad controller. So it's not like you're starting from nothing. You will never be able to have as few mechanics as a real beginner. Positionning is the key. But in this very video, I could clearly see advanced mechanics, even if you consider that you were bad with the keyboard. You litteraly did multiple aerials. And double taps ?! Which beginners can't do. So this is not a solid proof in my eyes, sorry ! I may have positionning weakness, but the difference in mechanic levels once you hit champion is obvious if you are average like me. Losing most 50s. Not being able to quick flip on kick off. Not being able to compete on walls. Not being able to stop a good dribble even with shadow defence. Not aiming properly when shooting. With the incredible amount of smurfs pulling ceiling shots and resets, which are very intimidating with my level, etc... You already have the knowledge of these mechanics (and their counter), even with your keyboard, and you are already better than me, at minute 1 ^^ For me, if you want to demonstrate this, you have to observe how a very beginner plays, and cap your skills regarding this. Never aerial. Never make clean controls on the ground. Never win a hard 50. Never shoot hard. Never play backward properly. THIS is having no mechanics. If you even only reach champion like that, I would argue that this is a way better proof. However, this is a good encouragement for beginners. Keep up the good work.

  • @zOriginYT

Whats interesting that Wayton pointed out was that his tm8 was "under ranked". I feel like that is definitely possible because solo q is very much unpredictable. There is skill and LUCK involved. If youre just not getting at least decent tm8s, you can very much be under ranked. I already know people are going to say, "work around your tm8s!" which yes i agree, but we cant just ignore the fact that luck and having bad tm8s is a reality to this game too. My evidence, today as we speak, i am going to get ssl in rumble to get my ssl rewards. Last season, i got ssl in just 5 days in rumble. Now i cant get it for weeks and im stuck in gc2/gc3. I also got ssl for the first time in 3s yesterday so skill isnt an issue. Its just this season in rumble i had no luck in rumble, but fantastic luck in 3s. So yes, luck and bad tm8s are a thing

The guy was not struggling to rankup, in 4 days he went from diamond to GC, probably a secondary account. Yes having bad teammates is a thing, but having good teammates and bad & good opponents is a thing too. And we ALL have bad teammates (the same way we ALL have bad days). So the argument that you can be under-ranked because of your teammates is just wrong (at least, as long as you have played enough games ; if you only have played 40 games then yeah of course randomness will play a big role in your rank). Thinking that someone is D2 instead of GC1 just because of teammates is completely delusional

That's something you absolutely need in rocket league and it can't be tought. You need to practice those shots and those saves or you will be completely lost when climbing up. And this translate to any support even if you would play with your feet, your brain learned those timings and can't unlearn them

I've honestly been hesitant to watch this video initially and honestly after watching I understand a bit as to why. I am someone who has been training and grinding away at the rank ladder for nearly 4 years and just barely got GC for the first time this season in 2's. The biggest change was getting a consistent teammate that I could play with and rely on. While yes I did play really well and outperformed my teammate in several games, it still didn't feel like I achieved GC myself. Not to say that I didn't appreciate the help or that it diminishes the fact that I got GC after hunting it for so long and having gotten 1 game off twice before, but the fact that despite all of my hard work, despite the years of struggling to improve and get better at the game to reach beyond that boundary of C3 into GC 1, came down to the fact of getting a teammate who had better mechanics so I could focus on my game sense. First thing that came to mind while watching this video was frustration as this video almost felt like a mockery to the hard work that I put into the game to try and get better at it; not in mechanics, but in game sense. All of my consistent friends and teammates I would play with would all say that I'm a very game sense driven player and often adapt to my teammates playstyles as much as I can so that I can enable them to play at their best. As the video went on, I started to get my mental back and reminded myself that what ultimately did end up helping me feel comfortable getting GC was the fact that I played smarter and focused on slowing down the play and just being smart and keeping the ball close/passing; which is kind of the point of this video. Something that I appreciated was that you talked about what often a lot of Champ players (C3 primarily is where I encountered it the most), and that is just when you're on the cusp of hitting GC, you encounter roadblock after roadblock stopping you from progressing further to that new level. This did bring up an intersting thought to my mind of something I'm really curious about and would appreciate if you asked your community about since you seem to be doing more research based videos as of late. When do most players end up playing RL? And a follow up question, what time of day do they think they encounter the most smurfs? I work a full time job and so I can't play during the day and often would spend my evenings once I get home with my wife/other family activities. So I normally play around 9-10PM till about midnight. I'm a night owl and often feel very awake and very engaged during this time and often play at my best. These times are when I am more consistently encountering what feels like more smurfs/teamed up players with even multiple smurfs at once. On the days where I'm at home during the middle of the day I seem to get more consistently players that seem to be around my skill level/rank and I tend to have better rank sessions. Granted my best rank sessions have been at the later hours of the night, but those are rare and oftentimes when I'm playing with someone of a higher skill level and they're playing really good that night. I feel that the time of day impacts the kind of players that you end up encountering and teaming up with and by extension your rank sessions. I don't fully know when you streamed these ranked sessions for this video as I can't typically catch twitch streams while at work, but I'd assume that they were during the middle of the day. Again this is just a thought and I have many more thoughts about this subject, but this comment is already monstrously long and so I'm gonna cut it here. Regardless I did end up appreciating and liking the video to a certain extent, just wish that you phrased things a bit better/emphasized a bit more of the struggle as it definitely feels like a bit of a mockery towards those of us who are trying to hit GC and get better at the game, but due to circumstances with random teammates or just encountering a ton of smurfs or even players like your mechanical teammate that helped you get to GC at the end of the video and just don't play that particular ranked gamemode, it makes hitting GC legitimately hard and not as easy as a lot of content creators make it out to be. GC and above make up ~1% of the total playerbase of RL, meaning it isn't a simple club that you can just sign up for and just have. I'm not saying it's impossible or a challenge that's just unreasonable to shoot for, just a hard challenge that can be achieved eventually given enough work, time, and passion for the game.

Conversely, I've played with folks who are less mechanical than me but our style/rotations fit together so seamlessly that we're beating people who look better than both of us as individuals. The point he made and if you actually look at it the right way is. You need reliable people to play with who can carry their own weight (not the team) and win as a team. I feel like the initial tweet greatly hinges on what people consider mechanics. You did address this in the opening, but I think you could take this even further and extend it to game knowledge applied on the fly. Like knowing when the timing is optimal to do a powershot or how fast your car reaches where. Basically all the things one could only learn to apply by playing rather than educating themselves elsewhere. And no matter the method, I don't think you can take that away from an experienced player like yourself. If you do consider this mechanics, I guess the closest thing to playing without those, would be to backseat every single small decision of a gold level player and have them follow suit with as little delay as possible.

  • @SALEENS7GTR5
    @SALEENS7GTR5 Жыл бұрын

I don't think there are truly "zero mechanics", as any input on a controller is a mechanic. You can't win by not moving, unless you win trade. With that said, this does make it difficult to delineate between what is considered "no mechanics" and "advanced mechanics". Technically, doing two inputs at once is advanced, since you have to involve more than one input. When you were jumping for the ball and getting saves on the keyboard, you were exercising turn, jump, boost, and air roll + knowing where to place your hitbox on the ball to get a save. That is very advanced to an outside viewer. You may not have been hitting flip resets or ceiling pinches, but at the end of the day, those are just a condensed series of core mechanics to achieve a desired effect. You could easily do that on a piano, with enough time. As such, mechanics should really be judged by the consistency you have in coordination to achieve a desire effect, not their complexity. A TAS goal is not more advanced than a bronze ground shot. It just has more core inputs condensed over time with programable consistency. So to say you can get GC with zero mechanics should really be phrased as "can you get GC with zero consistency?" I would say no. Unless you're carried.

I think it’s so much easier to do this in threes because u can rely on ur teammates to just pass it mid for you which happens for a good amount of goals for him. Also players in 3s are a lot worse which does help a bit

The only thing i don't like is the "0 mechanics" it’s more like "low mechanics" because 0 would mean u can jup in gc with only knowing how the controls work with no practice. But I get the point
