How I gained 20 yards of carry in one incredible golf lesson
Спорт
In this week's video, I took a golf lesson with Zach Berhow that resulted in gaining a ton of speed. The original intent of the lesson was to calibrate the swing, but after finding speed from a complete turn in the backswing, Zach pushed me to swing the club faster. The results were pretty incredible.

Ernie you so lucky to have such an amazing coach, Zach is such a great teacher. I’ve been playing golf about 3 years and watched thousands of videos to try and get better. I came across your videos a few months ago and started working on the technique that Zach s teaching you. I have to tell you my game is improving better than I could have ever imagined. Zach is the best coach I’ve ever watched, he makes it so clear. I wish I lived in Texas there’s no doubt I would search him out for lessons . Please tell him that he’s helping a lot of people and we appreciate him!! Also please make more videos it’s truly helping me and I’m sure everyone that sees your videos.
So jealous of you having found Zach, what a fantastic teacher. More lesson videos please, no they’re not boring, yes I will watch every minute of your full length lesson footage😊. I’ve learnt more from your lesson videos with Zach than I have from years of watching random “golfing tips” videos on KZread.

Thank you for posting this! Its pure GOLD!! I FEEL LIKE I AM GETTING SO MUCH INSIGHT ! I was stuck for awhile where my swing felt good but I felt like it needed more work. I wanted to really really get better but did not know where or what to look for. The shoulder turn and arm space BINGO! LOL... ZACH is gonna blow up w these videos! Just his style and simplicity. Best golf video series ever !!!😅😅
Erndog reminds me of my younger self. As you started focusing on golf, you wanted to get everything in the swing correct. You hit balls. You hit more balls. You worked on the game. You got better. You developed a groove with the swing at a certain pace that was comfortable to you. Your scores kept improving so subconsciously you know that you can post your normal scores and are comfortable with that pace of swing. An instructor starts telling you to push yourself. You discover that your body CAN respond to the new pace but it's tough to trust. It works in a controlled environment, but the subconscious is a powerful thing. You go to the course and the first few times your try this, your subconcious doesn't trust it and the results make you feel uncomfortable. You have to fight it for awhile before your subconscious and trust align with your faster movement. Trust me -- been there, done that! 🤣 You're making progress, Ernie. Keep it up!!!!! The progress led me on to multiple Texas state amateurs, US amateurs, Mid Ams, etc. over the years. You have a lot of talent and can get there too if you keep working at it.

Great series of vids. I started playing regularly for the first time in years and could still play but had no distance. I was carrying a 3 wood a lame 190 consistently. I accidentally found the leak on a 106 degree Dallas day when I hadn't eaten and felt like I was going to faint. My arms were feeling like rubber and the club felt heavy. I had 250 in on a par 5, thought I'd be about 40 yards short. I whipped that club through with those fatigued arms and I ended up pin high after the ball rolled through 20 yards of 3-inch rough. There's a balance between control and letting the arms turn to rope in the mix for those wondering why they can't get any distance it seems.

I love your rapport with Zach. The most valuable lesson I've learned watching these videos is to speak up and tell the instructor when you're concerned that doing what they say will lead to bad habits. Often times instructors are getting you to feel extremes so you can find the middle but you may not understand that as a student. For example years ago, I was using my arms too much and not rotating my body so my swing coach had me set my wrists and arms early and rotate through using the legs and body to release the club. After doing that for months, I was holding on too much and not allowing my arms to rotate at all. I was so confused and it took me a long time to realize that there is a middle ground. I've noticed in a couple videos you tell Zach that you're scared what he is telling you to do will get the right shoulder rotating too early causing the right to left swing path to return. He's demonstrated how it won't if you do it the right way. I know this will save you so much time and headache down the road. Thanks for the great videos.

Thanks so much for the kind words man! I’m glad you found the channel and are enjoying the content. Zach is the man. Best instructor I’ve ever had and trust entirely him with my golf game. Watch some of the original video where we focus on club path and club face. Those are the two we look at the most. Of course, carry distance is important and then evaluating the stopping power which is a combination of spin and launch. He wants me at 5 degrees in to out for my path, and my face should be 2.5degrees open to target (splitting my target and club path). Yeah, we had to scramble to get indoors for this lesson because of a hail storm outside, and had no idea the glare was blocking the carry number. That’s why I kept calling out the carry in the top left of the screen with subtitles

@@ErndogGolf I made it to the range this afternoon. I have a superball in the morning. I tried your pro’s idea as far as turning the left shoulder over the right knee. Now as I may have indicated, I am a very experienced golfer. And, I am always looking for new ideas to improve my backswing turn. I am happy 😊 to report this thought of turning my left shoulder over the right knee was, well, just about miraculous. There’s no way I can really get my shoulder over my knee but, just in the trying, it immediately improved my swing in several ways; similar to the changes it made in your swing from what I saw in your video. As I just concentrated on the turn it allowed me to let my hips release and it put me in a better position to shallow out my downswing. As a result (same with all clubs) I was hitting my driver with the distance I had or maybe even further than before a couple of injuries.I have been dealing with them for sometime which is why I am warning you to have a stretching program equal to your swing speed efforts. Anyway, my ball flight was a perfect trajectory with a tight draw. Good luck to you with your scratch challenge. The percentage of golfers who get to scratch is so small it will be difficult to achieve but enjoy the trying. I am sure your pro will be telling you that the short game and its practice is very important if you want to have any chance of getting to scratch. Good luck!!!

Hi there! Honestly, not very good right now. As you’re seeing, I’m getting an extra 10 yards of roll with an 8 iron, and what you didn’t see was an extra 15-20 yards with 6-5 irons. I’m not seeing this a whole lot on the course, but I’m certainly not holding a lot of greens either. I think of the next steps is getting fit for the right shafts. These were not fit for me in the first place and have never quite felt right!
I spent the last 6 months with video lessons, KZread, 100+ Trackman hours and I'm still hitting my 7 iron 140 and getting 77mph club head speed. I'm a sprinter, have great torque, athletically muscular (not bodybuilder) but I carry the ball like a 12 year old boy. I feel like giving up.

Don’t give up my brother! It seems like you haven’t found the right resource to help you unlock speed. Have you tried any speed training? How is your technique and what shot shape do you play? Zach can analyze your swing for you if you reach out to him on Instagram. Give him a shout and tell him what you’re struggling with.
I’ve been working on the same things. He’s seems like a great coach. Two things I ask is why does he want to swing to the right and why does he want path so much in to out ??? I’d like to know his thinking.

9/10 golfers show up to a first lesson with an outside in path. Somewhere in the range of -4° to -10° to the left. Obviously what they are doing isn’t working otherwise they wouldn’t be here. Most of them strike the outside of the ball. A big key is striking the inside of the ball. In order to do that we need a positive path that is inside out. It’s amazing how much distance and control people gain by getting a positive path. The reason I like people to exaggerate is that they go back to a negative path very quickly. Learning a positive path allows people to gain full understanding and awareness of the golf club and eventually have the ability to hit all 9 shots. High, medium, and low. Left, right, straight.

Welcome to the channel, my friend! Zach is an amazing coach. If you watch my very first lesson with him (Video is titled “The BEST golf lesson I’ve ever taken- how to hit a draw”) it’ll give you some context. My natural tendency is to swing over the top. I’ve worked really hard to start swinging from the inside but when the nerves kick in, your natural tendencies will begin to come back! So that 9.5 in to our swing will never ever make it to the course. He ideally wants me at 5, and if I get tense and nervous, it’ll come back to 2-3. He learned how to teach the golf swing from Hank Haney and the push draw is the shot shape they believe in!
Hi, did you got already a training with Zach on how to improve your swing speed? My swing plane ist fine now and I wanted to know how Zach approaches this topic. Thanks

Yes, we've hit on it a couple of times! Go to my channel and check out the playlist called golf lessons. There's a few in there about speed
I need this in my game. I hit 8i 140 and I'm a 6.4 hcap. If I could get more distance that hcap will come down to 3-4 quickly

@@finnobrien7604 6.4 is still mighty impressive. 10 yards gain will give you 2 clubs less into the green. Good luck! How old are you and what clubs do you play? If you don't mind me asking. I'm not great with driver, and woods, but gained 20 yards recently over a few months without getting any stronger.

It's obvious that you have a high IQ when it comes to all of this, and I'm thankful for the technical breakdowns. You and your coach seem to have a great dynamic, and you understand each other. I almost feel as if I owe both of y'all some money lol. Really appreciate the work you're putting in to document and help us all out. May the views pay for all your lessons one day!

Thanks so much man! I enjoy making the videos and editing them really helps me retain the information
Great lesson. My back honestly been so stiff lately. Been working like a fucking dog on my game past year lol so taking a little break but that left shoulder over the right knee hits home. Like you and him were saying it really eliminates the possibility of coming over the top and promotes you to come more inside and on top of that higher speeds. Can’t wait to work on this when I’m at the range. Thank you for this video. 🙏🏼

Awesome man! Hope your back feels better soon!
What’s the story with ball position ??
At the end of this video you state that you used to get "pinned" & "that you can't do anything from there!" Does this mean that your club is too far behind your hands & body to start the downswing correctly on the inside plane?. Also can you please tell me what golf shoes are you wearing? Are they FJ's Spikeless Traditionals? Many thanks & your coach is fantastic.

It’s the first thing that Zach noticed in the beginning of the video! Essentially my hands were winning the race to the top and my torso was not getting a full turn. So when I get pinned it means I didn’t make a full turn in my backswing and it feels like I’m stuck and have to spin my shoulder to release the club. Yes sir, best golf shoes ever and worth every penny!
How did you go about finding an instructor like Zach? One that uses the trackman…
How do you get your arms down to ball?
@ErndogGolf

Watch my first lesson with Zach where we talk about this a lot more. It’s titled “The Best Golf lesson I’ve ever taken.” I’m not thinking about my arms much in the downswing apart from squaring up the clubface. Just focused on swinging to First Base to come in from the inside

Who is the coach?
@ErndogGolf

His name is Zach Berhow out of Bridlewood GC. All his info is in the description!
i am slightly confused by this lesson. I was always told by multiple coaches some tour level to never to push off with back foot because that isn't actually transferring your weight that's actually putting all your weight on your back foot, and to never square the face using your forearm because as you get tired your ability to square the face worsens drastically where if you do the proper grip with slight wrist bend even when your tired you can square the face easily. Also with the wrist bend there is no timing at all u set your wrist and you are good, but with your forearm especially at faster swing speed you have to time it so well for it to work.
@ErndogGolf

I’ll let Zach chime in on this one if he sees it, but when you push off your right foot, you’re pushing off to get your weight to your front foot. So if they’re saying it brings your weight back to your back foot, then you’d already be late in the transition. It seems like your instructors are teaching you a different swing. Not bad or wrong, just different than the style that Zach teaches which he learned from Hank Haney. Zach does not like a wrist bend at all. Honestly, the forearm move feels super effortless once you practice it a bunch. There’s little movement from your back toes to your front toes, so squaring it up isn’t super difficult- it just takes some practice!

Well there are different swing theories out there! It’s important to know what swing they teach and why they teach it.
My turn got significantly better when I swapped to contacts - I found my frames were limiting my turn because I couldn’t see the ball. I notice a lot of pga pros wear glasses but they are the sporty type that kind of wrap around the eyes
