I think a lot of people who start drawing start with anime. It's unfortunate anime receives so little respect while being the gateway to art for many people. Watching your style develop was really interesting. Makes me kinda sad I threw all my old drawings away... ^^;

i can feel u! i also threw away no literally burned lots of pieces i made as a teen (always loved being creative but animes made me love painting) but due to a depression breakdown i just grabbed everything and threw it into a fire and didnt painted for years...taken me around 5-6years to get back to which is like 10years ago now xD

It's really hard to find a balance between liking realism and detailed work as an art style and also liking more stylized and simplistic styles, but for now I just draw the way I want that day and see what happens. Your watercolour pieces and sketchbook sessions really inspired me to get more serious about watercolour and drawing so thank you :)

Wow your advice is so good, I’m a bit shocked at how accurate your timing is :’) I always hear and see people saying “oh you should look at art you love and see what you enjoy and implement it in your own art!” and stuff like that. And that’s been really bothering me because I see art I love and get super frustrated with not being able to make things look Good in the way I like it, trying to implement a certain thing while not copying but “wanting the eyes to look like that”. It’s been so heavy and frustrating. Partially, I’ve been improving but at the same time I’ve been feeling so bad about my art. I think your thoughts on NOT trying to implement the art you enjoy seeing is super important-the fact you enjoy a style doesnt mean yours should look the same, but that’s kinda what you automatically believe. I also have been holding this idea that I cant draw certain things in a specific style, which really held me down for some reason. This summer I’ve loved and hated art more than ever before, but I feel like this really was something I needed to realize, thank you so much💜💜 Your journey is very intriguing to watch btw, I love seeing your progression! Your art has such a beautiful flow to it. The pieces you show around 13:34 are so beautiful, btw. Great video with amazing advice, thank you for sharing this 🧡

I feel y'all there! I'm not sure if satisfaction ever truly comes or not with drawing (still not satisfied with my own style sometimes as well, unless they're studies or observational sketches), but with my experience there's a weird labor of love feeling (don't know how relatable that is or not). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Your curent style fits very well with children's illustations. Or at last that's how I see it. In any case, your art progress was very inspiring.

I'm 21 like you and only a couple of years ago I realised that it didn't really matter if drawing was going to be my career or not, I have FUN drawing!! Now I'm a lot less stressed about it and, like magic, I improve every day. I was thinking I had to set the bar high, then that I should have lowered it... but the truth is I had to get rid of that bar! Of course I still have personal goals like finally learn how to do side view of faces cause that's a mistery for me :D But I mainly enjoy the time I take to draw everyday, trying new things, laughing at them and then try to fix. There's no need to make a perfect piece every time I open the sketchbook!

Fair warning this might be a bit of a rant... So I've been drawing for, uh, maybe a year or two. Dates are fuzzy but that's unrelated. But when I started drawing I had only one inspiration, and that was my best friend, so I pretty much spent 10 months trying to copy them and it turned out absolutely horrid. Due to that, I decided that I was going to draw however I wanted to. It worked well for 6 or so months and my art skills skyrocketed. Then I got more inspirations as an artist and it really made me realize that even though I was letting myself draw anything I wanted, it still wasn't how I wanted to draw. And because of that, drawing started to really stress me out. Not because it wasn't looking like (insert artist) but it was because I stopped improving and it just wasn't fun to draw like that. I flipped my art around and now I'm struggling with getting it to be something I find fun to draw. I'm closer now but I think because of my lack of uh time drawing I don't have as many technical skills. Anyways, thank you to anyone who read this the whole way through. It really means a lot.

after completing my gcse art exam (in 2016) i gave up on art and drawing completely, i felt so burned out and frustrated with the work we had to do for it that i didnt pick up a pencil in 3 years now, but im slowly getting back into it. recently ive decided to finally fill up a sketchbook i had for years now, mostly doing studies of human faces. i have no clue where i want to go with my art - do i want to do realistic portraits? semi realism? i dont know yet. for now im taking the first steps into getting back into enjoying art and maybe think about starting to use is as a coping mechanism and a way to express my feelings. i have many ideas i want to draw, but for now i think i'll focus on learning techniques i can utilise later on, everything else will hopefully come with time

I feel ya! In Junior and Senior year in High School, I took IB Art, and in combination of the whack assignments and my major bitch of a teacher, I hated art. Before, I wanted to be an art teacher, but that class completely drained me to the point where I didn't want to treat art like a job, and that summer I barely did anything creatively until it was almost time to start uni. This was 2017, and just recently I started wanting to pursue art in secondary school again... Once you're down, its so hard to get back up, but I'm proud of all of us for getting our footing back again

Alexis, I'm so sorry that you felt such terrible burn out/frustration. It's really one of the worst feelings ever. At the end of the day, your art is yours. It doesn't have to "go" anywhere. If you want to make a career out of it, cool. If you want to use it for self-therapy, cool! If drawing just makes you happy? Do it. The benefit is you really do have your whole life to grow and explore. There's no rush. Take it at your own pace. Wish you all the best.

Its nice hearing your backstory and how it isn't one of those "I've been drawing since I was 3" stories. Not that those stories mean anything negative, I just can relate with the "I started doing Anime characters" thing more :D Right now I'm finally starting to draw watercolor and I feel like from here a lot of things will change (espeiclly my paper thickness :D ). Also, very nice video I like watching them =)

I know the struggle of getting inspired by other artists and wanting to draw like them. My technique is to ask myself what exactly I like about their style. The inking? The shading? So I try that out and build my own artstyle with the influence of other people.

This is exactly what I needed to hear! How did you begin to draw from your head? For example, when drawing people, I feel I need to heavily rely on references for poses. I would like to be at a point where I can draw a pose from my head.

INSPIRING video. I'm right now, in my 40's, in my journey of discovery in my own art... strange as that may sound. I used to draw a lot in my teens, and as much as I wanted to learn inking and coloring, working with real paint just wasn't something I took to... messy form and inconsistent color tones had me too frustrated, lol. Pretty sure copic markers weren't around back then. But I having gone into work in the graphic design field, which is of course more "technical" oriented for publication composition, I greatly developed my digital skills. Among that, color tuning and blending that isn't akin to "chemistry" like with paints, or at least it was to me, lol. Thing is I'd gotten more and more used to designing with a mouse and one day I pondered why I wasn't drawing by pencil any more. And seeing that digital painting, merging freeform hand illustration with the limitless options in color toning & blending, is what I've always been looking for to expand my creative expression... I decided to do something about it. So I've had my Wacom tablet for little over 2 months, beginning with just practicing form (lines, character, posing, etc...), getting back into shape with my character sketching, and beginning my venture into fully fleshing out my art in color to complete the lines. After a prolonged absence in hand illustration, I realized I had no clear vision of my own style. I don't mind saying I take my inspiration from a broad range of comic artists; John Byrne, George Perez, Neal Adams, John Buscema, Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Michael Turner, J. Scott Campbell, and more recently, Stanley Lau (Artgerm). I think we all agree art doesn't exist in a vacuum and most artists (including the ones I named) are inspired by those before them. Of course I don't want to be an *imitation* of any of them, but in drawing upon them as a *learning reference* that I develop (or re-develop) my skills. And THIS is the epiphany your video gave me; From inspiration, emerges passion. From passion, emerges skill. From skill... emerges style. Style isn't a determined choice, it's the *organic result* of practice, dedication, and patience.

I'm saving this for later. I can't wait! Thank you.

The paintings you did on the canvases and the smaller post card sized ones were absolutely amazing! Definitely makes me want to pick up paints lol

I did start with Anime style but I gradually move to semi-realism and realism (learning anatomy) I've finally discovered my art over the course of 3 years (when I started to get serious and left anime style). I came back with this cartoon style and kept drawing until I started to make it something more recognisable and then leaving of drawing for some months. Until recently this summer I started to draw every day. I know it took a lot of trials and errors. But over the course of 3 months I finally saw improvements on my arts. I really thank you and the other artists that helped me through their videos. Thank you very much

I was always told if you have to practice to draw then u can’t draw and I think that s what made me forget about art and just not even try but now that I look back at my younger drawing I have improved I’m currently learning anatomy and finding my styles and improving and your vid helped there’s little things in your art that I love that I’ll try bc idk it warms my heart ? I loved this video, I'm in the third (of four) year of art school and I still haven't found my art style. I feel like I learn a lot, and I definitely am more skilled since I started, but not having found my art style yet frustrates me. It was really cool to see your journey! I've just recently started trying to draw in a cartoony style. I always just did semi-realism, but kind of closer to realism. I always admired people with cool cartoony styles, it always seemed so much more difficult to draw cartoony things than to draw realism/semi-realism. So I feel a bit like I did when I started to draw, I'm very uncomfortable with everything I make. But learning is fun, so it's also very exciting.

I like how your journey started with anime, I've seen videos where other artists started out the same way and even came across some bumps in their journey because they drew anime. All art starts from the artist enjoys to see and create. But I don't feel like that my art is coming around to the same skill of the ones I admire for their work. I'm glad your work keeps improving and hope I and others are able to find their own way to better improve and stop comparing my work to others and stop trying to rush to reach the expectations we set for ourselves. after graduating high school i stopped doing art for many years, although i really wanted to paint but i didn't feel confident enough to bother. when i first started drawing again, around last year, i was so disappointed with how horrible everything looked, it was like i had lost some of my art skills. your videos and advice have actually helped encourage me to get back into art and embrace it because i'll get better if i just keep at it.

I love this. I have a very bad tendency to wish I could draw like other people or specific styles. Then I have styles I follow that can do and that’s all I end up doing vs just taking my sketchbook and seeing what comes out naturally. I really need to work on that one. Btw I love those mini paintings of the room scenes!

As someone who doodled a lot as a kid and then stopped for a decade, I'm definitely learning these things later in life than you did, but regardless seeing your journey is comforting. These days my busy schedule and anxiety about never being able to achieve what I want combine to make progress feel really slow, but just as you said, I don't plan on stopping any time soon. My problem is I always want things to have more detail, or look a bit different so I iterate a ton (mainly paint digitally) and that drags out the time it takes to finish things. Getting comfortable with something not being perfect is what I have to start working on. We'll all get there, just have to keep at it!

I just got back into drawing. I let it go for a few years because people in art communities were so negative, not to me in particular but my friends and people I worked with and it just got kind of stressful. Now I’m jumping back into it, and I feel like I lost my technique a bit but in a way I’m not mad about it because I feel like it’s a good point to start my style over

I love your take on this topic! Something I see people saying the most is that improving = drawing in a more complex way; adding more detail. But I don't think that's how it works. I draw kawaii/anime style and while I was focusing on improving I actually thought I needed to make my drawings look more 'realistic' in order to improve them (smaller heads and eyes, for instance). After a while I felt super uncomfortable with what my art had become. Now I have embraced my simple kawaii style and have been working on techniques to improve my style without actually changing it, and I've never been happier with my big headed huge eyed girls. It's important to know the basics but I feel like what's more important is improving your technique in order to make your style look better, not changing your style so you can use all the techniques.

Well...I just looked up Fran Meneses, and I like your style much more. I like your storytelling in your art. Keep up the great work my friend 👍

That was really interesting, thank you. 😊 I went back to school at 34 to study art and got really bogged down in creating what the tutors liked (that got higher marks), so when I graduated I didn't even touch a pencil for 8 years. Now I'm unlearning everything they taught me and I swear I've made more progress in the last 9 months than I did in 3 years at university! 😁

I never really took notice but, since watching this video, I realised how much I improved and how quickly. So thanks because I feel so much more inspired now to draw more and keep making those improvements

Thanks for sharing! I'm always curious on how people get where they are, but as an artist I realize trying to copy peoples art I end up completely different and feel like that's how I ended up having the style I do now but I'm not confident enough to draw in just my own style

Skillls babay!, I felt so unskilled when I was doing head perspective over and over again, but my sketches got better and my friend noticed, I had more fun with my sketches

When I was 8, I started drawing. I followed tons of art tutorials. I think that's when I realized I loved drawing. I am still struggling with my style, and what I want to do. I really want to do those beautiful illustrations, but found I'm better at realism and portraits.... This really helped!

Recently we watched one of your videos in our art class, kinda cool

I feel like anatomy is still so hard for me and I'm hoping taking an a&p class will be helpful. Thanks for the video and motivation
