Good lad, iv been in the building trade since the mid 70s, mostly self employed and have now decided to retire. Allways remember when starting out it takes a while to build up a customer base and other contacts within the trade, but if you do a good job at a decent rate word soon gets around and work comes in, the other thing i learned was don't get to big and most of all leave time for yourself to enjoy life, it's not all about work and money. I enjoy your vlogs and wish you all the best for the future, keep up the work ethic ma man you will do well .

Another good video . Little tip for you use the doorstop head lay it on you lining and mark your leg positions using your square . Then fix it to the bottom and no need to use your tape . Time saver 👍🏻

This is great content, in all regards and I'm so glad I found your channel! I'm actually a gardener/handyman guy by trade but I do get her odd request to do a bit of first and second fix carpentry. I am no carpenter and I always make that very clear, but I try not to turn work away. You will definitely be helping me improve, without a doubt. Hopefully to the point where I feel more confident and can start to outwardly offer these sorts of services. Cheers man and keep up the very good work 🍻

Just a thought, why don’t you get a longer hoover hose or fit a shoulder strap, attach it to your portable hoover and then you can wear the Hoover instead of it being between your legs, should be safer that way.

@@Lyonscarpentryjust to add, hinge jigs are only any good for new work, if you're hanging doors in old frames where hinges are already in the frame then you'll have to mark them and cut them into the door individually, you could use a single hinge jig but they would have to match the existing hinge size, if not you can make one to suit or chop them out by hand.

@@dannym670 yeah I get what you mean mate, but most jigs are standardised at the 3 & 4 inch butts, I got one which does both off Etsy for about £20 3d printed one, it the tits for what it costs and when got new frames just get a bit of skirting and knock up a full size jig with the one I have

  • @_leeclarke_

Just to clarify, do these figures you're quoting include covering for the materials you bought? So, £70 per door frame, is that after you've had your costs settled? Hopefully I'm making sense 😅

Hello I love this content you have made me wanna be a carpenter! I am 28 years old and I'm struggling which way to go about being a carpenter! Please could you suggest what's the best way of going about it? Paying for a course so I still work or being a apprentice? Or any other suggestions?

ive always charged per hour which is more fair. you may think im the loser in the scenario but its fair fair that way. yes tools cost alot and skills come with a price but once it gets easy then i dont think its fair to charge all that. you should bill the customer the labourers/other joiners hourly rate aswell. i work with a shit hot builder whos quick, fast, the best communicator and so time efficient n he charges by the hour.

What are your thoughts on referral fees? I know an incident where a builder wanted money for giving a carpenter a small job. ( finished in a day) and wanted about 150 quid from him for giving him the job. Knowing the carpenter returned the favour by giving him 3 jobs back. ( builder never won the jobs). Plus they’ve been mates for over 15 years.

I never ask for refferal fees but if it’s on my job and it’s a big job different trade prices go through me and I just mark up the price abit for management fees etc. But all trades I work with I never ask for money for getting them the job and I never get asked to give fees
