HOW I ESCAPED CHILD MARRIAGE TO BECOME A WOMEN’S RIGHTS ACTIVIST | Mercy Akuot | TEDxKakumaCamp
As a teenager, Mercy Akuot’s Dad informed her that her schooling days were over, and she was to immediately get married to a man she knew as her uncle. She was told she had no choice, that this was the custom and tradition. But for Mercy this tradition was wrong, and she fought back. She says she doesn’t blame her parents, but negative cultural practices that oppress women. Her story of survival drives her passion to support women and girls to stand up for themselves in Kakuma Camp, in South Sudan and around the world. (Recorded at TEDxKakumaCamp on June 9, 2018) When she was only 15, South Sudanese refugee Mercy Akuot was married off against her will, to an elderly man. She escaped the forced union and now advocates for women’s rights and supervises a women and girls empowerment program in the camp. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

It isn't men it's everyone that allows things like that to happen. It isn't helping anyone if you blame all men for terrible things that happen. The women in those cultures aren't much better, they enable things like that to happen and sometimes they agree with them. It is person's actions, not a specific gender or racial group you are part of, that determines whether or not you are a good person.

Men like her husband & Jonathan, the man who provided her shelter, those are real men. People like the woman at the salon who hid her for a month, the officer who kept her parents from taking her, that’s kindness. “Culture” & religion are not an excuse to harm & oppress women, certain men or children. It’s 2019 & in too many parts of the world they’re decades if not centuries behind the times. All in the name of culture and/or religion. Governments should be secular & completely separate from the influence & control of religion (and I’m a person of faith). A politician who cannot separate his/her religious beliefs from what is right for everyone, from every background in his country has no place running for office & that applies to every country no matter how wealthy or poor it may be.

Exactly. I know she doesn't want to blame her parents, she has a generous heart and wants to see the good in her parents. But those people who helped her also lived in the same culture, and somehow they didn't lose their sense of what's right, and were willing to take risks to help a stranger. So the culture alone is not responsible for inhumane actions like that.
