This is beyond informative. Would love if you wrote a handbook on this topic. Like you, I also was interested in art as well. I thought I was gonna be an artist but I discover guitar and things change. I started out playing In church. Never thought I was good enough to play anywhere and I ended up in a jazz ensemble. It was the first time I heard money from guitar. From there I was lucky enough to land a teaching gig part time at a college. Never thought I was good enough but seeing complete beginners leave playing a whole song was very motivating and fulfilling. Right now Im trying to get out of my parents house. So Im taking my career as a guitarist serious. I really didn’t know the value of the opportunities I have as a guitar player until watching this video.

@Jack Tapley yes, I now have a guitar teacher, I am currently learning some VanHalen on my own and My teacher is giving me a steady diet of theory, circle of fifths, triad structure and scales. This past two weeks I've been drilling on arpeggios traveling up and down the neck with sweep picking through the major key and also picking triplet arpeggio patterns ascending and descending. I take my guitar to work and play on my breaks, I play a couple of hours every night. Three weeks ago I met and talked with a musician here who hosts an open mic every thursday at a local bar in the down town music district, I played him a demo of a song I wrote and produced just recently called Pain Machine, he loved it and invited me to come down some time to the jam. I'm heading there tomorrow night.

Being a music teacher faculty is also a thing...but that requires a whole trinity grades as well..I m persuing that as well..too bit late with that too... And even after that let's see how much I can survive... No one supports in music... parents n none.. It's sick fight.. Hey Rob, really good video. I found you by searching for this topic. I’ve had my KZread guitar channel for awhile and I’m just getting to the 1000 subscribers milestone but I have a long way to go for the watch hours requirement to start making KZread money. However, my goal is to be making a living teaching and playing guitar in next 2 to 3 years. I am curious since this video is 3 years old and now you’re over 10,000 subs, only talking KZread, can you tell me if you have added other income streams that have really helped you such as affiliate marketing, livestreams with super chats, or anything else like that?

I've been playing guitar for around 2 1/2 years now, and have been keeping a job such as becoming a guitar teacher or player in consideration (still in school). Out of curiosity, how long had it taken you to master guitar? Also, how much income would you get out of something such as teaching guitar? Btw, love your channel and hope you can help out!

  • @RobGalley

In terms of mastering the guitar - I don't consider myself a master! But I have currently been playing for around 17 - 18 years, Been performing professionally for about 4 or 5 years & studied theory too so I'm confident I am at a good enough level to teach. Most of my lessons are either total beginners or people who have been playing for a while but perhaps hit a brick wall with their playing. As for income that totally depends on what you'd want to charge for your time, or if you teach as part of a school (like I do) then whatever they charge. Here in the UK the national average for an hours guitar lesson is around £25 - £35 ($31 - $44) which is what my lessons cost. So the more lessons you have the more you'll earn! Hope this helps

@@RobGalley Awesome! Thanks for replying! Also I totally think you're a master. I've seen your vids! Anyways, i'm glad to hear that you've taken up something you enjoy rather than something you can 'just do'. I started off getting taught in school but due to events (something about funds for school) I've ended up having to teach myself (hopefully for just for this year). Would you know any good resources or tips that I should know of that'll help me out? No worries if you don't, just thought that it wouldn't hurt to ask.

  • @RobGalley

Alfreatski Things that have served me well is to work on being able to figure things out by ear pretty quickly! Then as for theory just make sure you have a pretty wide knowledge of scales, intervals & chords - including how to build chords etc. & then perhaps look into the circle of fifths, that’s a great tool!

Pro tip: don't get into drugs. That means weed too, and avoid tobacco if you can. If you're serious about music, make that your addiction. Try to learn something new everyday, or every week. While your young is the best time. I'm 20 years old now, and I regret all the time I wasted noodling around on guitar and not taking advantage of my free time to learn some music theory. Once youre working and paying bills you'll have very little time and energy to focus on learning. Good luck

Can you elaborate on what that situation is that assembles you into a band, and gets you work? I don't know what on earth that is, but it sounds interesting. You really spoke to me. I'd be happier working in a guitar shop than being some corporate drone. Since the pandemic derailed my life I've had to start hearing my mom pep me up about "getting a GOOD high paying job that pays lots of money" ...and makes me feel like I'm wasting my life too? I really hope I can make this work.

Thanks for watching. I’m glad im not the only one who would rather earn less doing what I love than earn more doing something I hate. As for the bands, just search for any wedding/function band agencies that might be on the lookout for more musicians to add to their roster. Perhaps look for local auditions etc. Failing that, start your own! Then build it from there, if you target yourselves for functions & events there’s more money in that than playing bars or even normal gig venues. Good luck man 🤟
