I have found that the only thing that works for me so far is to 100% distract myself. I put on a podcast and aggressively start coloring small details in a coloring book. The whole "relax, breathe, calm down" technique just makes my anxiety worse.

Same. My anxiety usually gets worse on holidays because I sit around the house and doesn't do much. But when I'm at college I get really busy and I never even think about it.

Maybe because while you're breathing you are wanting it to free yourself of the anxiety like magic, which in itself puts pressure on yourself and makes you more anxious. What works for me is concentrating full on the bodily symptoms and writing them down, like describing how they feel. that helps ground you. Distracting never fully works because you'll just be afraid of anxiety. Sounds easier than it is of course

"Living slowly" is the best advice ever. I honestly would get "live slower" tattooed on myself somewhere. I find that even when I do relaxing activities like walking or puzzles or coloring I'm always doing everything super fast and in a rush and it makes me so anxious. I will even realize I should slow down but can't *yet* bring myself to go at a more slower relaxed pace. love this video though! I relate to your anxieties a lot.

I have generalised anxiety disorder, social anxiety and panic disorder. I've had it a very long time and I couldn't leave the house for a year and a half at one point, I missed a lot of school and didn't do well at all. I feel like I missed a lot of life. But I do have some useful tips for anxiety and panic attacks! Keep a positive data log of all the times you've felt anxious but have come out the other end and have been ok, the world didn't come to an end and you didn't die the worse didn't happen etc. Then when you are having a bad day you have solid evidence that you were ok in the past and that everything is temporary, even anxiety. Also note the negative thoughts you're having, they in the end make the anxiety 100% worse. If you can start pin pointing when you're having negative and anxious thoughts you can stop them in their tracks, pick them out, write them down and again jot down the evidence that supports/ goes against these thoughts. Weigh it all up then come up with more balanced thoughts, how likely are they to happen? Are they helpful thoughts?? So yes you may feel uncomfortable and like you can't breath and you'll want it to end, BUT you won't die and your stress/ anxiety will come down eventually, whether it be 3 minutes or 30, it will gradually decline because it has to. It will even decline faster the more you challenge the negative thoughts and make them balanced. Not encouraging / catastrophizing them will make the situation much easier to deal with. It's truly amazing how much our thought process actually affects our anxiety and panic attacks. During a panic attack it may be very difficult to challenge the thoughts, but the brain is a muscle and it needs to be worked / reprogrammed to work this way, so try it when you're mildly anxious, whenever a thought pops up, challenge it right away, then after plenty of practice if you one day have a bad panic attack, your reflexes are more likely to kick in and you can help yourself realise that the worse will not happen! Do not let your thoughts get away with telling you such awful and negative things about yourself and life, if it was another person saying these things to you then you wouldn't have it! So why should you have it from yourself? After all what your say to yourself isn't fact it's opinion. Sorry for my long comment 😂😂

Living in the present moment is key. Try not to let your thoughts run away to the past and/or future. All we can do is enjoy and accept what is happening right now. It takes time to retrain our brains to do this, but just realizing it helps a lot.

Thanks for the great video again! I dont know how I only just got around to watching this when I suffer from both anxiety and depression. When you talk about how you never used to be this person and you were always really laid back, I can 100% identify with you, it almost made me cry. Its exactly how I feel. But remember that mental illness is never something that you can choose or prepare for so don't feel frustrated or angry with yourself. I spent so long getting angry that I had changed but I feel like I have gained things from suffering mental illness and I have helped a lot of others because of it. Which is exactly what you do with every one of your videos :) just remind yourself about the good you are doing as a result of being the person you are today

Hi Sarah, thanks for the video. I also suffer from Anxiety but I think what works for me is to let go of everything and be present. Also, treat myself with patience, kindness and love because if you start to treat yourself bad it gets worst. The last thing you want to do is to be frustrated with yourself. Take it step by step, second by second, breathe by breathe and let go....

Completely agree with the social media/electricity thing. It's really easy to loop those things into a daily routine, and in my experience breaking from the routine on purpose helps quell the anxious feelings I'd sometimes get when the routine was broken for some other reason that I had not prepared for. The goal of course is to be okay with the things life throws at me without always needing to be prepared, lol, but in the meantime that's what works for me!

when im really anxious and depressed i like listening to self-titled by twenty one pilots, it just takes my mind away from whats happening to myself, and body and mind and makes me think about the music (if that made any sense). I also watch a show when i have the time, either himym or modern family or something like that. when im frustrated i usually listen to nirvana or ac/dc. and when im out, and the anxiety kicks in i always play music on my headphones and it always calms me down. that works so well for me so im really grateful to the artist that i listen to

For example, i was supposed to be at a festival for a week right now, but my anxiety ruined it, and i had to go home the day after i came there. What I've learned with anxiety: It's useless to fight against it or try to distance yourself from it. The more you try to negate or even overcome your anxiety the more it will feedback onto itself and spiral down. For me it's healthier to allow the anxiety to do everything it would, if you allow yourself to feel fear and panic without trying to fix it the feedback loop breaks and you stop feeling like you're losing control. One time I got an anxiety attack that made my arms completely numb and I lost the movement of my hands, it was like they were completely stiff. The anxiety felt so so awful and overwhelming, but I still felt calm and in control of how to handle myself. While you're having anxiety this may seem contradictory, but it's true. Accepting the way you're feeling and allowing yourself to feel it won't make the anxiety automatically go away, but it will spear you from the suffering you cause on yourself and lift a huge weight from your back. I hope this helps someone :)

Keeping a constant routine helps me but I know everyone is different so it might not work for you. When I get anxious the best thing is to put in my ear buds listen to my "happy" or "calm" playlists and go for a walk, often doing deep breathing while walking. Distraction in general is a good way to deal with anxiety, however don't let it become avoidance you need to deal with w/e task or situation at some point.

I went through all these things you talked about. I used to have anxiety about not having food available. I always had snacks with me. And always bring a meal/ or ingredients to make one with me when I went to a friends house. And I had the same thing with music in car rides. I used to always be listening to music and never have silence. After having several panic attacks in car rides I finally turned the music off. I got audio books. I stopped listening to music ENTIRELY for a year. and eventually weaned myself off of continuous background noise. This was a major change, but I didn't feel i had a choice. Also researched alot on wellness and living a Christian lifestyle during that year. It basically washed all the garbage out of my mind and really eliminated nearly all anxiety from occurring anymore. Great video, TFS 😊

I am so thankful at the end you did say to reach out to counseling and possibly medication if you need to. When I first was diagnosed with my panic disorder a lot of people suggested things like yoga and counting exercises and meditation etc to me and they didn't understand that my personal case was so severe that it didn't help and I needed to seek professional help. Your suggestions were great and I do a lot of these things now that my symptoms are more controlled and they could definitely help someone with minor anxiety but if anyone out there is watching this and has severe enough anxiety where none of these little tips help then please don't be scared to reach out for help!

Such amazing advice Sarah! I also suffer with anxiety and the major thing for myself is to set the tone for the day myself - feed my brain lovely things for the first half an hour after waking up. I think social media triggers it all firstly because there's a lot to take in, it's just such an interactive platform filled with text, pictures, videos, sound etc and our brain for that half an hour straight after waking up is extremely sensitive. Secondly social media is very negative, radio is very negative, tv is very negative. By all means follow current affairs but don't do it first thing, your days will be so miserable and there's no need to add things like that! I do use my phone but I just go on KZread and listen do meditation playlists or motivational videos, daily affirmations or even audiobooks but no interactive content. What I find really puts me off to is when people bombard me with messages and texts first thing before I even wake up so I turn it all off before bed ❤️

hi sarah, i never coment on videos bc i'm self conscious of my english but i felt this video spoke to me. i've been battling generelized anxiety with associative depression for about 4 years now and even though i'm much better now than i was 5 years ago i'm always looking for advice and tips on how to cope, and so i stumbled upon this video. I'm happy to say that a lot of things you mentioned i do myself! the living slowly bit only makes sense now because i've learned to live like that to cope with my anxiety. One thing i used to do when i got really bad panic attacks and i was alone (i was away from my family and my bf for college and i was living at the campus dorms) was to "let my brain know i was onto him". I've learned that my brain is triggered by most of my thoughts and so i figured if i forced myself to think about good or meaningless stuff, it would stop the panic cycle before it truly starts and goes out of control. I know I might have looked like a crazy person talking to myself on the campus hallway, but repeating "no, no, i'm ok, its just anxiety, it'll go away in a few minutes" to myself as if i was talking to someone else but it really helped stop the panic attacks when they start the cycle. Anyway i hope this was helpful at all, i just wanted to give you kudos for this video and all your work and maybe add something to those of us in need. Take care!

It's definitely true about getting older and with every year I'm becoming more stressed out. When I'm feeling anxious, depressed, stressed -- I stop thinking about things, stop putting things off. The most effective for me is going on hour walks, sometimes it's hard to get myself to do that -- but once I'm on it, it helps so much. :)

(word wall ahead, oops) I've always been shy and an overthinker, but it wasn't until i hit 18 and had my first real job (in a medical field at that) that I started having full blown anxiety and panic attacks. What was shyness when I was a kid turned into generalized anxiety, severe social anxiety, and depression. It's something I've struggled with for going on 5 years now and I know it will be with me for life. I'm so SO happy I found your channel, you mentioned driving anxiety and thats one of the WORST things for me, so good to know im not alone in it My personal advice is that if you have the money and ability, especially with severe social anxiety, seek therapy. It may take a few tries (lots of research beforehand, look for specialists) but it's a good way to work out coping mechanisms and ways to bring down an attack as it starts. They are trained and professional and if you can push yourself through the first few moments of introductions, it helps. Don't ever be afraid to reach out and seek help. Scents and calm music work well too (for me, things having to do with the ocean and yoga cds). Animals really help with depression too--I find myself getting depressed/anxious more often when I'm away from home and my cat. (But this is more of a "I'm stable" choice, animals shouldnt be in the mix if youre struggling to just take care of yourself) I'm also a very big writer/fandom person, so when I start getting anxious, I kind of go into my mental world and say "You are an Avenger" and stuff like that, and imagine a scene for myself (I also do that nature thing). It's sounds really silly and childish but it has saved me from attacks several times.

My anxiety is triggered by noise, its very strange. But even when i was a child like 5 years old i would show signs of fear and discomfort and hide whenever there was to much noise in the house.

omg i thought i was alone!! and same here, i was sensitive to sound as a kid too, but now that i've developed generalized and/or social anxiety, its gotten worse. Like, i'd be in class and if someone just suddenly spoke loudly or coughed or even moved a chair, it'd freak me out, and then i'd get even more anxious anticipating noises, it's awful and i don't understand it :// i'll definitely read up on hsp

I didn't realize for the longest time that what I was going through wasn't something everyone went through...that not everyone over works and thinks until they cry over small tasks. That not everyone has every single worse case scenario run through their mind..and it made me feel alone. So this video really helped, because although it's obvious that I was never the only one, anxiety can make you feel that way. My family and I have been through a very difficult year where we had two family members pass away. Now my anxiety has gotten so much worse, I alway think the the worst is going to happen and I'll think about it until I can feel my heart racing. What I found to help a lot is just going for walks and listening to music, it's simple and works to clear my head.

I agree with trying be alone in order to calm down. What I also try to do is draw, whether it's a detailed drawing that I can concentrate on or some doodles I can get lots in, it's just a good distraction and I feel so much better afterwards 😊 Writing out how you feel whether you bottle it up or not, helps a great deal too. Getting it out of your system helps. 😊

When Sarah said as she gets older the less she can handle what's thrown at her, I definitely feel the same, I feel overwhelmed by life, it is getting too much. I'd like to leave everything and go to a desert island. I have just quit my job, because I couldn't cope with all the bs and now I am scared of the repercussions, I might get sued for not giving a notice. Who knows. At the same time I feel stupid, because some people go through a lot worse in life and I'm moaning about the harsh times I have at work. So I feel even worse. Urghhhhh! I wish I was a psychopath, with no feelings at all.

I have never been to a psychiatrist because I have no health insurance and I can't afford it but I am extrenely sure I suffer from a severe anxiety disorder and depression, which is the absolute worst combination (I suspect I also have BPD but that is harder to diagnose and shares symptoms with many other disorders). The way I deal is just pushing myself to do things. For the longest time I recurred to marihuana, alcohol, cigarettes, prescription pills like Prozac and Xanax that I got on the side... and it just made it a hundred times worse. Lately I've been making a conscious effort to be healthier: changing my diet and exercise routines, quitting all the drugs, meditating and trying to deal with my emotions instead of masking them. I sort of became my own psychologist. Also, surrounding myself with positive people has been a great help, but mostly I seek to understand the causes of my anxiety and identifying what triggers it.

Noises in general, no matter how small and irritating flare up my anxiety and causes me to have these god awful intense panic attacks. The massive ones usually happen to me in school, like these few times, a classmate of mine was playing with scissors and kicking her seat, I practically leaped out of the classroom. Or this one time in public, when some bitch took it upon herself to start drumming on a garage door. Ordinary sounds too, like when someone drags their feet when they walk, or slurp their drink, eating sounds are just ugh... Being a hermit does wonders to me.

Honestly my dealing with anxiety was the opposite of yours! I had it since I was in elementary school and it progressively got worse. Once a reached high school I had anxiety and depression which did leave me to drop out. Not until last year (I'm 23) did my anxiety FINALLY die down and it honestly was because of a band name. Fidlar, which means Fuck It Dog Life's a Risk. Anytime I had an anxiety attack I would think of that, and it worked! It's honestly helped me so much and they're just 6 little words. P.S. I love your videos! Been watching for at least 5 years! :)

How I deal with anxiety: - meditation/yoga - going to the gym - putting myself out of my comfort zone (I have social anxiety so I force myself to go to social/ networking events/ being more talkative to anyone and everyone) - to help with feeling unmotivated, I set myself a goal/ schedule for the day and it feels a ton better when you tick things off your list :)

***** My first one was about a year ago. I didn't know what it was at first, and tbh I also thought I was going to die. I was in the shower when I suddenly felt very claustrophobic and nauseous. I got dressed and ran into my bedroom, and I lied down on my bed. I was shaking and crying but I didn't know why. I started thinking (this part still freaks me out) about how much easier it would be to not be in the world. I didn't want to die, but I wanted to kind of cease existing. It is super hard. I'm getting my wisdom teeth out tomorrow, and they're giving me anti-anxiety meds so I don't get too nervous before they give me the IV (I hate needles) so I'll see how I am tomorrow morning...

When I can I try to stop and think of how all the negative anxiety thoughts I am experiencing are not logical, and why I shouldn't worry. I also telling myself multiple times when I'm worrying about something I have no control over that, just that I have no control over it and for that I shouldn't wrap my mind around it. It can be very difficult to think or talk yourself out of anxiety, I know but it's a method I use at times that helps.

I have noticed that when I gent anxious while being alone or in a place without noise I enjoy listening to loud music (metal, rock, etc) I like the "screams" (don't know how else to call them) they make me feel calm and as if a weigth lifted from my body. But in the other hand if I am in a loud place I like to listen quiet music or read a book, because it makes me feel like I have a little more control over what could happen in the situation. (ambulances, screams, people asking for help) My mind goes a little to far imagining what could happen in certain situations and I guess I try to find a balance to keep me calm.
