They need to train nurses about this so they have an idea. I recently was awarded a stoma and I got a kinda crash course from a nurse who was a specialist in ostamy issues but there is so much you kinda learn by doing it and finding what works best for you since all bodies are different. Watch these videos and they will help you in case you need to help a patient or do an actual change. There are things that can happen during a change like the stoma becoming active and pushing out stuff so keep a tissue ready. Good luck in your career :)

nicolejurgens2 Hey, just wanted to say that your problems are every bit as valid as anyone else’s, and just because she has a problem that she is used to dealing with that you have no experience with, doesn’t mean the problems you do have experience with are lighter or easier. I have pretty severe and debilitating depression at times, and just because you can’t see it the way you can see a stoma doesn’t mean it’s any less real or painful and difficult. So the least you can do for yourself is to not blame yourself, just like you can’t blame anyone for having a stoma. We have our hands full just taking care of ourselves let’s not put that extra stress on ourselves and compare ourselves to others 😉. I hope things will get better soon for you though. ❤️

Also the fact that this woman has a chronic illness that a lot of people don't understand and mostly likely disliked it because they think its "gross" is beyond childish. Just like your absolutely unnecessary comment. I hope you don't ever end up wasting your time and energy doing something that pointless again. Take care.

These videos are very helpful. It’s the first time I ever see a video on the subject. My husband RIP, wore an ileostomy bag from 1969 up until he passed in 2015, and this became very helpful because in 1974 he became a quadriplegic in a car accident and I learned to take care of it. Thank God he never had any problems with it. His ileostomy was caused by ulcerative colitis. Thank you for sharing your experience with a lot of people who do not understand this. God Bless you.

I can't thank you enough for posting this video! I've had colon cancer twice and have a foot left of my large intestine. On a good day I spend 3-4 hours in the bathroom in pain. On a bad day, between 9-12 hours. I've given myself nerve damage in my legs from sitting for so long. My kids are really pushing for me to have an ostomy done because they "miss me and want their Mom back." I promised them I would even though I'm terrified. The idea of a bag of poop hanging off my belly was the worst thing I could think of. Thank you for showing me that it isn't that way, that it's not gross and life can successfully go on, even with an ostomy!

When I was a child I had a ostomy. I was so so so so so convinced I'd never be able to live my life or ever have a normal life. So at 14 I chose to get it reversed. It took 8 major surgeries. 19 Months in and out of the hospital with the longest stay being 4 months without going home or getting out of bed. The pain was horrible and I'm sure I lost all ability to have children of my own. I can't imagine having it still. And there will always be a possibility of me needing one again. This gives me hope! hey just coming from a chronically ill person, most of us chronically ill people don't like it when others put down their own problems just because we have health problems. we do complain about our health. maybe not on public forums when we try to educate others. But to us, reading comments like this makes us think "wow they really think our lives are so fucking awful that their own problems are some how invalid and not worth venting about." It's not the big compliment you think it is. Treat yourself kind and give yourself some grace to complain when you need to complain - cause we do the same damn thing. Just with different bodies. we too complain for no reason about daily life annoyances.

Reverse? Reverse? It can happen? I'm in a rehab recovering from heart surgery that had a complication of perforated colon. Having LOTS of trouble with stoma and ostomy bag (care here lousy, too). Hard to be positive - this young woman is super inspiring - but it's hard to imagine feeling alive again with this stoma here. I feel so bad that this woman lost her stomach, though. MY stoma is super swollen right now; they think I'm constipated, may even be another blockage. It's hard to get exercise with my heart recovery as the sternum is still healing and there are movement restrictions. Anyhow, I've lost MANY things from all this, and I'd love to get the surgery reversed. They Said it would likely be temporary, but things I've been reading say people got used to it and don't Want another surgery: the risks, etc, etc. Is it possible you can render an opinion about this? I've been so sliced and diced up. I'm older than this vibrant young woman and my long stay in hospital plus two week delay in getting help -- anyhow. (No insurance! Long story. Had to replace mitral valve: it broke: 70% of blood was flowing wrong way in heart.)

I had a follow-up app't with my surgeon yesterday morning and he said they had always planned for my stoma to be temporary! I was happy to hear that. (They'd said so in beginning, but I wasn't sure they meant it.) (Not sure I Want more surgery; but - we'll see.) The "team" was very positive, said incision was healed (took out staples)... I got a hernia, hence the "trouble": protruding a lot: but they said not to worry too much. That was too much info, sorry. But thank you again, it was kind of you to reply and be empathetic to a stranger. I have more empathy now, too: going through physical difficulties is quite hard indeed, and there is always someone much worse off. I worry my 14 year old nephew may be facing this in the next few years. Doctors think he might have crohns or UC and are still investigating. Your videos are helping a lot of people.

A friend of mine from high school committed suicide, leaving behind his wife and newborn daughter, because he didn’t have the strength to deal with his Crohn’s Disease. I could never grasp how it was bad enough for him to take his life. Watching your videos helps me understand the disease and it’s monumental impact on a persons life. I also think if he had a shred of the strength you have, maybe it would have turned out differently for him. Maybe if he found your videos he could have seen that there was still a life for him to live. Keep making your videos, you never know whose life you are saving. You are a beautiful soul with unimaginable strength and I can’t imagine how inspiring you are to others with the disease.

What a beautiful dignified young lady. To have the generosity of soul to putt yourself out there! I'm sure your videos can help all of us to not be sooo afraid of life and howit can change. You are doing such a wonderful deed that will help thousands I'm sure. Especially young ones that will need it. You show that your appearance doesn't change and that it is in fact controllable. Thank you from down under. Maureen.

As a certified ostomy nurse this is a good video. She is well adept at her changes. We usually recommend only using a very thin caulking of stoma paste. Too much paste can actually cause cause more issues and can become mess to clean even with adhesive removers. We also teach to cleanse the skins with warm water only on your paper towel and pat completely dry. I loved the trick with placing the bag over the pants to remove pouching directly to avoid any spill or leakage. I will share that tip with my brand new ostomates.

As a new ostomate - 3 weeks out and having changed my bag 3x now, a warm washcloth does not get the sticky residue off. I use a barrier ring and had to use 8 adhesive remover wipes (granted they are like a 1" square) and I still didn't get it all off, so this last time I ended up using like 8-10 and finally got it all off. Hopefully next time will be easier for me and there won't be as much stickiness left behind. Most videos I see doing bag changes only use one or two adhesive remover wipes.
