I feel like the shower is the only time I can really clean out my ostomy fully and completely. When you change your bag and clean around the stoma and the surrounding skin you never get it fully clean that way and the smell is sometimes off putting. It feels so good to jump in the shower and have nice warm water hitting it removing all the crusted output and feeling so much fresher down there! Anyway, kudos Maggie, keep up the great work on your channel! Long time supporter! 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻

This may be true. Safety should be the no.1 priority. Skin differ with each individual. Therefore when one is practicing this, one should be cautious, and one must be honest with the attending Practitioner. The Practitioner will then keep a close eye for any signs of infections or any other complications that may occur. This will give them a chance to deal with those complications at an early stage.

My friend uses a "disposable overshoe" when showering. They're those plastic covers that health workers or carpet fitters wear over their shoes. They do a pretty good job keeping her bag dry.

Here's my shower routine. I let all the air outa the bag, Roll up the bottom edge, Carefully clip up the edge with a long hair clip. Cover the bag and all with a large piece of Glad "Press'n Seal Plastic Food Wrap." It sticks right to my belly then is easy to remove afterwards. I used to tape it around the edges, but now I've learned how to avoid that step. I just avoid letting the water spray directly onto the bag for the most part and usually this works fine. I learned this trick from Megan (The Front Butt You Tuber) years ago.

I just want to say that I love your channel! I didn’t have this surgery. I only discovered your channel because I was having surgery on my stomach and looked up how they do the surgery I had. I had a hard time finding the right products to keep my bag from getting wet while in the shower. I wouldn’t trust my stoma because it usually likes to misbehave when u don’t want it too lol anyways I found that flex seal plastic wrap with some waterproof nexcare tape would do the job and its a cheaper version for those looking to try something new. My patient recently asked me about taking a shower & I was a little apprehensive out of concern for water getting under the flange. My doctor told me that the water showering down on your stoma is so good for the stoma. Go ahead and do that. I usually shower without the bag but inbetween I have the bag on.

Good for you, so glad you found this powder too!! I gave you so many different ideas in the past, the ziplock bag, grocery bag, etc etc…You were getting so frustrated with all the comments and ideas we were tossing your way..I stopped as well as many of us. I hated it for you that nothing was working. Anyway, the powder…WOOP WOOP!! I smile for you. Ya, I still use the ziplock bag but I use water proof tape to hold it on, I’ve not had water hit my wafer in a year or so. That is unless I know I’m changing it anyway. My miracle I call it. :) I do shower with no system on as often as possible for in my mind I feel it needs washed. Feels great too :) Have a great week ahead hun, and I wish you both much happiness always!

Hi Maggie. Thanks for the videos. You’ve really helped me get a lot more comfortable with my ostomy. One thing I’ve found to curb costs a bit. If you’re insurance allows 8x12 framed 3M Teagaderm with a piece of gauze (the whole tegaderm sheet is sticky) works well. I can order 12 a month (it’s considered wound care). But that let’s me only buy about one pack of JJ care covers and 12 tegaderms. I use the empower your change ostomy cover too (since I’m probably a bit neurotic about a wet wafer) but with the two covers I don’t have any worries about a wafer failure due to water. Thanks again for the great videos. Keep it up they are a great resource.

I use Kayraya adhesive past.. I am so delighted with it. Also I do not shower every day, it was much more difficult. I shower with out any thing but me and the water…

I used Hollister before. Great product, but they never stuck too well on me in showers or when swimming. So I tried the Brava product you talked about, although the straight ones since Hollister flanges are square. And it sticks TOO well. I'm a hairy man, even if I shave my belly, the brava would find something to stick to. No amount of adhesive remover would work with those (it's not the same type of glue). So while they were a great option, just be prepared for the sometimes painful part of removing it.

I need that real expensive Eakin board! I am brand new at this and I bought this weird rubber thing that sucks everything in tight! I have not tried it yet the Eakin stuff is like gold.. I have terrible skin I sweat from Dysautonomia…the flanges are awesome…I am not totally comfortable doing the changes yet.. but I am learning! Getting OUT of that rubber girdle was like an I Love Lucy episode! I did a dry run…big mistake…I may try your trick!

When I had my ostomy I loved taking a shower without the bag. I felt like I could really get it clean.

I use a hollister bag and shower ever morning. I take a quart sized storage bag and slice the bottom open. I then fold my bag in half and tape the bottom of it to my stomach and put the storage bag over my hollister bag. I use 3M Nescafé waterproof tape to seal the plastic bag. I strip across the top and a small strip on either side of the storage bag. I have been doing this for 1-1/2 years and it keeps most everything dry. The storage bag is reused for maybe a month and a roll nexcare tape last 2 weeks. I buy it in bulk online from Walgreens when it is on sale, about $4 a roll.

I tried the Nexcare tape and it immediately came off when exposed to the water. Now I just shower with the bag or go commando and put on a new bag afterwards.

Amazon has a plastic cover with a belt for shower with an ostomy. Works great!

I was really apprehensive in the shower at first trying to keep it dry. Then I heard you could swim with a bag. That really helped but really helped was I would shower and not take any care to keep it dry, before a change and I realize that it's just as hard to remove it didn't have any effect on the adhesive. Now I can take a regular bath full if water. Just don't worry about it.

For some this works (it used to for me) but as my skin changed, water really affected the adhesive. I'm really glad you don't have any issues with it!

Hi Maggie!…I have found this on Amazon!….the company is bbto, & this is their product that I use: 50 Pieces Transparent Stretch Adhesive Bandage Large Waterproof Bandage Transparent Film Adhesive Bandages (8 x 8 Inch), How I use, I fold up my stomach bag, & tuck it into itself, (making it smaller in size), & cover the whole thing with one of these sheets!.. works great for me!…hope this helps someone!❤

Hi Maggie, first time viewer. Do you have any suggestions for itching underneath and out my flange. I have a piece Hollister urostomy pouch. It also occurs with a 2 piece Hollister pouch.

I have a relative who was recently diagnosed with Crohn’s. He has had issues for years but was only just diagnosed after a routine colonoscopy and the doctors finally put two and two together. He has been told that if Humira doesn’t work they are going to have to do an ostomy and he is very apprehensive. Can you do a video on ways to help him cope and any suggestions to help him be more at ease to the idea of an ostomy?

I appreciate you sharing this. My skin doesn't like any adhesive products, but allergies appear to be the cause. Finding ways to reduce irritation is another tool in my belt.

Ten years on , I shower everyother day. Change bag every time I shower. On no shower days ,I wash off not getting my bag wet. If your new , remember it will get easier when you figure out what works for you. You are Not the only one dealing with this. Love everyone!

Ive tried 3 types of bags and tape and nothing works. Im allergic to them all. Coloplast hollister both caused me to have an allergic reaction. I have open sores that constantly bleed. Their are a few more things to try but im feeling like nothing is going to work. Any suggestiones. Ive only had mine for a month and have had nothing but trouble

@@lisajoseph9825 hey Lisa be encouraged, it will get better ....talk to your stoma nurse... about various products... also different shapes ie convex concave ect and the use of seals can make a huge difference to preventing moisture ,keeping skin dry and help with reactions , this has been my experience, ....trust me you will find out what works best for you .powders can help on the skin first as well. i hope and pray that you find out what works best for you .

Anticipating colostomy surgery. What products are you currently using? Thank you Maggie🌷

This week will be 6 weeks since getting my colostomy and I have learned a lot. My stoma is on the lower end of my descending colon so right above my sigmoid. I’ve had Crohn’s for 10 years and I finally had enough of chronic constipation and not being able to go and do what I wanted, when I wanted. I’ve found for showers I prefer to leave my bag off so I can let warm water clean and run over my stoma and the inside of the flange. I use hollister new image 2 piece bags fyi. If my bag is starting to lift it’s usually at the top of my flange so I’ll either put some Nexcare absolute water proof tape on it or this other good water proof tape called HY-Tape which I find better than the nexcare tape. I’m so lucky to not have had any major skin irritations other than a stitch that popped so I had a very painful open wound between my stoma and skin but that has since almost fully healed. I just recently started irrigating my colostomy and it’s been the best thing I did. I irrigate once a day whenever I get up and don’t have any out put until the next time I irrigate. Mind you irrigation isn’t recommended or needed for ileostomies. I’ve also found having a hand held bidet sprayer works amazing for colostimates who’s out put tends to be very thick or pancake. Nothing feels better than a clean empty ostomy bag.😁

I’m using Hollister. I don’t have a problem with it coming away from the skin. I do have a huge problem after showering. The fabric gets wet and I try to dry if off, sometimes even with a hair dryer on a cold setting. It doesn’t seem to make a difference in the end. It starts to itch after a while and the skin becomes weepy. I end up cutting around the edges to alleviate the itching. The skin around the stoma is mostly ok. I was on a very short course of steroids and it helped but I can only use it as a very short term solution. I know it thins the skin. I have tried the OTC nasal spray and that has worked but I feel I am in a viscous cycle. Years ago I used to use Fixomill transparent tape but that didn’t work 100%. I don’t think the shower guard is available here. I’m not winning at this stage

That's great you found a solution. Everytime you mention Hollister, I am wondering if it is another brand, or apart of the clothing company...

I used to have a friend who also used Hollister ostomy bags who would say he had the most fashionable bags in town!

While still in hospital (post-ileostomy)I was showering every 2 days, just prior to changing bags. That way it didn't matter HOW wet the bag got as it was coming off anyway! Leaving hospital ive ended up in temporary accommodation with no trustworthy shower, so cant vouch for how it'd go in the ordinary world...

It's no problem to shower with your bag on if you feel more comfortable that way! I will be getting my second bag next month, a urostomy next to my ileostomy, and you can never take both of at the same time! So I will have to shower with at least one on ;)

It's still early days D Foster and everything is more than likely still settling down. Start taking note when your ileostomy is less active, and a pattern will emerge. For me the morning is the best time for bag removal. I can easily have my bag off for 20 minutes plus and there is no output, You'll get there.

I take naked showers since I now have a walk in. It’s easier than needing to climb in. I eat a marshmallow 20 minutes prior. Oklastoma love it and so do I. Tomorrow is shower day…yayyyyyyy🤗.

Sometimes you get a bit of a sensation nearby the stoma, sometimes you feel like you need to go to the bathroom in your rectum (for those of us who still have a rectum) and then the stoma becomes active. I hope this helps?

I tried the marshmallow trick. Didn’t work for me. I find just changing my bag first thing in the morning or just before before bed are the perfect time for my bag changes.

Man, I don't know what I would do with an ostomy at all much less the shower issues - I am VERY VERY VERY sensitive (allergic?) to all adhesives. The only tape I can tolerate at all is a silicone tape I came across. Especially sensitive to Tegraderm - when they put that on me over my IV sites, even for just 6 hours, leave almost like a burn area where the tape was that lasts literally 3 weeks.

Me, not having an oststomy; *That's a lot of hassle, why not just go without it?* Now I know.

Hi Maggie- Any thoughts or experience with general travel or air travel 🧳 with an ostomy (National/international)? I’d love to be bold enough to travel with my ileostomy once the health of the world is not at the forefront of the news. Airport security- what to expect, are there any advantages to having a medical card or bracelet? Is an extra bag for supplies allowed? Extra beverages/hydration for longer flights. Airplane bathrooms... where to go for emergency supplies in a foreign country or unfamiliar city, management of Montezuma’s revenge, etc. If you don’t have experience in this area, you’re off the hook. 😉

hi! I’ve had mine for almost 5 years now. Traveling is no big issue at all! When you get to security at the airport, right before you go through the scanner just mention to the agent on the other side that you have an ostomy bag on your (right or left) side. They’ll have you go through and then the most standard procedure is they will ask you to touch around it under your shirt with both hands and then they will swab your hands and scan it. Some will also do a waistband pat down but they never touch it directly. with the scan for some reason it MAY flag for explosives (i have no idea why but mine did that once) they’ll just check your suitcase and you’re on your way! An extra bag is always allowed for supplies and my biggest tip is to always pack your supplies in your carry on bag. I don’t ever use a medical card or bracelet for it. As for extra beverages on a plane I’m sure if you explain to the flight attendant that you have a health issue it would be no problem. and as for emergency supplies in a foreign country- anytime you travel, domestic or international, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS bring 3 times the amount of supplies you think you’ll need. I learned to never count on there being a solution at my destination. While it’s annoying because they get heavy, it’s better safe than sorry. I’m happy to answer any more questions if you think of anything! Safe travels!

what ro do about slow output

For those saying you can shower with the bag on, some even bathe with the bag on…I am using Hollister bags and they have a cloth-like feel to them. So these can get completely wet and it’s not problem? How does the flange stay stuck if it is in water? I’m afraid to try it if this is the same type of bag people use? Do other brands have plastic bags and flanges? I am new to this so I don’t know anything except Hollister.

The Hollister fabric bags are the ones I use too and they are fine in water! You can use a towel or hair dryer to dry (on cool setting - don't want to melt the plastic of the bag)! There are other brands that are just plastic but personally I don't enjoy those as they get sweaty underneath!

Don't use soap it will cause your bag not to stick clean it with warm water.

Being completely ignorant of anything ostomy related I'm wondering can you shower with out your ostomy? Can you time your shower when your stoma is quiet?

Topic request: Clothes !! I mean how do some of y’all do it ?! Jeans ? Tight shirts ? I just can’t seem to make clothes work well for me. I get so frustrated and have just gone to leggings and t-shirts most all the time but I’d like to dress nicer sometimes and feel more confident in clothing. I see see so many people wearing high waisted jeans and such but they always hit right at my stoma and it’s very uncomfortable. And we’re in the world of high waisted everything now. It’s impossible to find low rise jeans. I have found some nice comfy jeggings that look decent and are warmer than leggings since it’s starting to get cold. And tight shirts keeping my bag pressed up against me just makes my output pancake in my bag and it sits on my stoma and starts stinging. I have to make sure I wear longer shirts so the bag doesn’t peak out the bottom of them even if I’ve folded it up and tucked the bottom into my pants. Then if I’m out and it begins to fill up, it especially starts becoming way more obvious. I’m still working on mastering emptying in public places. Clothing had been one of my largest hurdles.

had same problem. I felt like my only options were house dresses or bibbed overalls because they were loose around the waist but they are not very fashionable. Then I had a bit of a brainiac idea….maternity clothes. I started off with a pair of yoga pants. They are high-waisted and don’t cut through my stoma. They are tight enough to keep my bag in place without causing pancaking yet loose enough that they don't cause any pressure against my stoma. I have been able to extend my wardrobe by wearing more of my tops that don't go with coveralls. I have since progressed to maturity dress pants and I found a pair of real denim blue jeans. Happy, Happy!!!

I just had my ostomy and I have not had to change my clothing. I purchased full briefs for the ostomy to sit in and skin tone vest tops. It keeps everything neat and tidy and the bag is no longer visible.

Look at DIY maternity jeans. Adding elastic to your favorite jeans made it nice to feel like my old self in my favorite jeans!

I used to be able to shower with Hollister bags but the last 2 times left my skin VERY dry and crusty under my flange. I know I can't use lotion, but I don't know what to do. I'm afraid my skin will break down further and cause open sores.

@@josie4peace I rub Head & Shoulders Classic shampoo around the edges of my stoma then rinse it off. It works.

For me my stomanurse just said I have to change my bag every time I shower. Isn't that much easier for you?

I'm not sure where you live, but in the US typically insurance doesn't cover enough bags to change daily if you are showering daily. I'd get a little nervous to change daily just because if it is still sticking well, I might risk tearing healthy skin off. I guess I could use adhesive remover every time!

I’m going to get a colonoscopy for the first time in a couple weeks. I have been having symptoms of ulcerative colitis (at least I think it is?) for 8 years and finally telling a doctor about it (I know I should have done it sooner) because the symptoms I am having are quite embarrassing but surprisingly not painful. It’s the blood I’m seeing everyday that is worrying me. I’m only 23 does anyone have any tips 😕

I've had UC for 10-11 years. Also had blood in there everyday, even got anemic. Try to be open and be sure to check your hemoglobin in blood tests. Try not to eat too fatty food. As for me: I tried all kinds of drugs right after their trials but I ended up being on high dosage steroids all the time because nothing else worked. After having to stop my apprenticeship because of it and almost all of my big intestines being affected, I had to get an ostomy last year. But remember: It's always different person to person. Wishing you the best. Be strong. :)

I would take a shower just before changing the bag,

Karaya 5 dries very fast and then my bag is loose again. It pastes only while its wet. 😭

Maggie, YOU Mam, Are A Super Genius. Not afraid to try and experiment, and come up with something that will work. I was gonna suggest something, and you can laugh at me if you wish, but there is a reason why I thought of this. Get a box of Kleenex cause you are gonna laugh. Denture Powder.. Not cream, but Powder. Sometimes I have to brush for a long time even if I just a tiny amount, because it will absorb water up to 4 X what you put on. Make sure your skin is a bit damp, not wet but damp. Believe me, it sticks to almost anything on the human body. I was gonna play a clown in a play for high school, and my nose would NOT stick. I happen to think of a sprinkle of this magic substance, so I dampened my nose with a cotton ball, smudged a smackeral, ( which is smaller than a smickeral ) and BEHOLD. it worked great. Getting it off was as easy as putting it on. Using warm water, and paitence, I soaked my sponge nose in a cup of warm water, and in less than three minutes, POOF ... It was off_ Just a suggestion, and if it worked for me, I thought it may work for you. Been following you and Zac for quite a spell now, and I must say, what you have to say is very interesting. BTW. I was a D.J. back several years ago, and if you dont mind a suggestion here, let me tell you to use a mic setup featuring an elecret ( yes, elecret is correct, ) to stop some of your problems with your mic noise, length, width, and it is highly sensitive. I may be able to help you there if indeed you wish to try it. Thanks for putting up with me, and this suggestion. I will continue to watch your channel, for any further information you have to offer on IBD. Its an interesting topic.

At least people living in the USA or Europe have products to help with skincare of a stoma her in my country we have almost none for people with a low budget 😢, I'm dealing with colon cancer for the second time i have a permanent stoma bag and I'm really suffering I've been looking for a adhesive removal spray but i couldn't find it anywhere 😢

Kosher marshmellows contain fish gelatin or artificial. I know that cause i am allergic to fish

2-3. The idea behind it is that the gelatin helps to thicken small bowel fluid.

Ostomy since January 2017 and I still haven’t managed to make a shower stress-free or enjoyable. It’s either peeling at the edges or taking the bag off completely and knowing it’s going to, y’know, do stuff while I’m showering. One thing I really hate about my stoma. Small price to pay I guess.

Shower first thing in the morning before you eat or drink anything.

I tie a plastic bag around my stoma bag when l shower and that usually works for me.

You're Soo beautiful and radiant

I hate fabric wet bag. It would feel like wet socks.

I’m a male and I have an ostomy bag and it’s awfully embarrassing trying to have sex with a bag hanging down

Tape is your friend, I'd think. Maybe empty your bag and then use some tape so it sits against your body rather than "hanging out"?

I think you should have another barbie butt surgery video and having to deal with the stitches as well as the awful removal of those stitches. Thank God you'll never have to deal with that again. That may have to be 2 videos.

So you can't take a shower without having one on? I thought you could. Hmm I learned something new

not funny but funny free wax

Used to cover my wife's ostomy and tried everything.....tried showering without any covering .....not a single issue and going on 10 years now ....have never had an issue. Even got her soaked in the salt water ocean many times ...using a balloon tire floating wheelchair....no cover , no issues. Never has it changed how long they last. Never have they came off or loosened at all. Never any skin issues. Considering how close they put her stoma to her belly button is saying something.
