How I Carved A Black Bear With a Fish

Hey folks... In this weeks episode Jeff strives to be more spontaneous and demonstrates his techniques of carving larger sculptures. In this video he carves a large black bear holding a fish from a whole log. Being mindful of how a sculpture is designed and some of the basic concepts that he's considering in the process of chainsaw carving. Sometimes the best results come from being open to a pivot in your design as your working Jeff works mostly from his home based studio where he enjoy Northern Idaho life at its best. Great job Jeff. I'd like to see "Cracker Barrel" place one of your black bears in every restaurant they own around the country along with your products that many could afford.

@@asculptedlife Hey Jeff, next week I will carve my first big black bear with a fish in her month. I was wondering if you use oil or water based paint for the black color. Also, do you seal your arts with oil based urethane/poly for protection? Mine will be installed outside. thanks again for your help!

@@romannepoitras8981 I use water based paints … as far as top coat goes it depends but more often than not I use a product called flood cwf Uv clear tone … I like it for a number of reasons.. waterbased, easy clean up, easy for clients to maintain and it’s very low sheen so if you have multiple colors it won’t get muted by some weird pigment

Thanks Jimmy ... I use acrylics. You can always mix up a color, but its easier if you can find on that you like ... I have used shades similar to burnt umber but some people prefer lighter tones for the muzzle. Thanks for watching :)

Toni.. thanks for watching, I use both water and oil based stains and a topcoat (Flood cwf Uv clear tone ) It’s easy to apply for both me and clients and it leaves a very low sheen.. if you have numerous color tones the pigment won’t mute the colors too much, hope that helps :)

Do you have to do any special prep to use water based flood over oil stain, or just let it dry? Loving the channel so far
